The Irish Volunteer is part of David Kincaid's album on which it is the titular track, originally written by Joe English and set to the tune of "The Irish Jaunting Car" by Kincaid. For the album, Kincaid assembled a collection of songs written during the Civil War era about Irish American soldiers fighting for the Union. Most of the songs only came with lyrics so Kincaid had to find traditional Irish music to set the lyrics to. Kincaid was devoted to historical accuracy in performing the songs, the pieces are performed only with instruments that would have been available to the people of the period.
The songs tell the story of the Irish immigrant volunteers who fought for the Union, most of the songs mention Thomas Francis Meagher, Michael Corcoran, and the famous Irish Brigade.
Lyrics:
My name is Tim McDonald, I'm a native of the Isle
I was born among old Erin's bogs when I was but a child
My father fought in 'Ninety-Eight, for liberty so dear;
He fell upon old Vinegar Hill, like an Irish volunteer
Then raise the harp of Erin, boys, the flag we all revere
We'll fight and fall beneath its folds, like Irish volunteers!
Then raise the harp of Erin, boys, the flag we all revere
We'll fight and fall beneath its folds, like Irish volunteers!
When I was driven form my home by an oppressor's hand
I cut my sticks and greasеd my brogues, and came o'er to this land
I found a homе an many friends, and some that I love dear;
Be jabbers! I'll stick to them like bricks and an Irish volunteer
Then fill your glasses up, my boys, and drink a hearty cheer
To the land of our adoption and the Irish volunteer!
Then fill your glasses up, my boys, and drink a hearty cheer
To the land of our adoption and the Irish volunteer!
Now when the traitors in the south commenced a warlike raid
I quickly then laid down my hod, to the devil went my spade!
To a recruiting office then I went, that happened to be near
And joined the good old Sixty-Ninth, like an Irish volunteer
Then fill the ranks and march away!--no traitors do we fear;
We'll drive them all to blazes, says the Irish volunteer
Then fill the ranks and march away!--no traitors do we fear;
We'll drive them all to blazes, says the Irish volunteer
Now when the Prince of Wales came over here, and made a hubbaboo
Oh, everybody turned out, you know, in gold and tinsel too;
But then the good old Sixty-Ninth didn't like these lords or peers
They wouldn't give a damn for kings, the Irish volunteers!
We love the land of Liberty, its laws we will revere
"But the devil take the nobility!" says the Irish volunteer!
We love the land of Liberty, its laws we will revere
"But the devil take the nobility!" says the Irish volunteer!
Now if the traitors in the South should ever cross our roads
We'll drive them to the devil, as Saint Patrick did the toads;
We'll give them all short nooses that come just below the ears
Made strong and good of Irish hemp by Irish volunteers
Then here's to brave McClennan whom the army now reveres
He'll lead us on to victory, the Irish volunteers
Then here's to brave McClellan, whom the army now reveres
He'll lead us on to victory, the Irish volunteers
Now fill your glasses up, my boys, a toast come drink with me
May Erin's Harp and the Starry Flag united ever be;
May traitors quake, and rebels shake, and tremble in their fears
When next they meet the Yankee boys and Irish volunteers!
God bless the name of Washington! that name this land reveres;
Success to Meagher and Nugent, and their Irish volunteers!

I had a distant uncle who was an Irish Volunteer, recruited on the dock after landing in Philadelphia. His younger sister at the time was 14 years old. She got informed that he had been wounded at Gettysburg. So, she went down to the train station in Philadelphia where the wounded were coming in. The place was totally covered in wounded soldiers suffering from all sorts of terrible wounds. She never heard from her brother again. The sight so traumatized her that she refused to speak English for the next 90 years of her life and only spoke Irish, except when being introduced to my older sister, who in the early 1940's was a toddler at the time. "The child's a Daugherty."
As a American, this was always one of my favorite songs. Just truly American and thanks to the Irish Volunteers of long ago.
Damn right boyo irish Catholics will fight like he'll to defend freedom of man 🇨🇮
Amen brother!
Irish in america have always been the ones from the early 1800s to 1960s where'd you see often Irish guys working along with Scottish volunteers working in coal mines factories and all the dangerous jobs nobody wanted to be in.
Google Saint Patrick's Battalion
The Irish play a big role in the war.
As a marine and of Irish and Scottish heritage I take heart in being considered an Irish volunteer!!!!!❤
Nice.
Bear in mind that the Scots who arrived in Ireland from 1604 onward weren't exactly welcome.

As a 2nd generation Irish-American who served in the Army this song holds a very special place in my soul. It’s our peoples history of how they fled pain and suffering just to turn around and fight so others wouldn’t have to go through the same anymore.
Born and raised in america, not much in our history to be proud of. These songs give me some heritage and history i can be proud of. A history of blessed rebellion and fight against oppression. God bless ireland and all its people. ERIN GO BRAGH!!!🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
I'll be visiting the memorial to the Irish Brigade at Gettysburg, Pa soon. Cheers mate
Slainte!
I love this song I am a big historic lover and the 69th Irish volunteers is one of my favorite regimens of the Civil War
YES YES YES! Amazing job!! 😁🍻 TO THE LAND OF OUR ADOPTION AND THE IRISH VOLUNTEERS
Well drag them all to blazes! Says the Irish volunteer!
Drive*
Whelp, guess we’ll have “the Fighting 69” and “Irish Brigade” on Seth’s list as well.
Youre covers are the reason i started learning about irish history. Proud and glad to have to have that history in my blood!
May Erin's Harp and the Starry Flag united ever be!
Truly the Irish volunteer has more patriotism than any man I’ve ever known. I salute to you sir 🫡
This song strums my ancestral bones. AND it sums up my attitude towards the current crop of traitors and insurrectionists, treason and corruption of our American Ideals need to be punished more severely, in my opinion.
Finnaly a folk song to relate to. My 5x grandfather from Limerick Ireland came to NY and fought 3 battles winning the medal of honor for capturing the confederate flag in opequon.
Not only are you a great singer who constantly pumps out so many great songs, but your songs also teach me, or at least encourage me to learn about Irish history, thank you
A proper song for a debt we cannot repay
Now I'm sad I'm not Irish.. You guys have a lot to be proud of🤗
The perfect tunes to watch the Irish Brigade segments in the movies "Gettysburg" and "God and Generals".
Listen to kelly's irish brigade
Kincaid had a ton of amazing songs in this genre. I’d love to hear your version of a few more.
Up with the stars!
Down with the traitors!

I wondered how long it would take him to do this song, David Kincaid has many great ones!
I agree,. I'd say which song of his is my favorite, but it's hard to choose which one.
Clean start and then Harmonize ... Simple stings used to rythm.
Clear work and Power with a grace of sorrows. 😢
Great work. 🎉 thank you.
Can you please please do "The Parting Glass"? Especially the Wellerman version would suit you perfectly in my opinion. Greetings from Germany
This song makes Uncle Billy happy.

Great song. Great performer.
I love how you portray the Irishman deriding traitors here... so accurate to the general historic consistency. :)
Absolutely Beautiful man !
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love this rendition! :D
Anyone else feel like this song is totally appropriate for America right now?
You should sing we all fight for uncle Sam😉❤️
Ah!!! Finally!!! I've been waiting for you to do this song :) Well done.
Class cover! Fair play Seth👏🏻
Thanks!
Could you do Streets of New York?
I actually have two relatives who fought in the 1798 rebellion.
I have one! Henry Joy… he led and died for this rebellion in the North…
✊✊✊
Wow that’s amazing been waiting a long time for this one!!
HURRAH FOR CORCORAN!! HURRAH FOR MEAGHER!! HURRAH FOR NUGENT!! AND HURRAH FOR SETH FOR THIS AMAZING RENDITION!!!!
hear hear
I'd love to see a rendition of Song for the Irish Brigade, despite it being a Rebel Irish Volunteers song
I watch you from gaza despite the war
You do a pretty good cover of this seth.
I found this song a few months ago and occasionally I listen to it again.
Did you know the 69th was in over a dozen engagements in the American civil war?
They fought long and hard, typical of irishmen.
David Kincaid has alot these songs, they're all pretty good, but this one is the best If you ask me.
Song of Rebel's 🍀
Arguably, the first part about his father is about a rebellion, rebelling in the 1798 rebellion.
The second part is literally the opposite, a soldier in the union army, putting down a rebellion.
please sing the 'Song of the irish brigade' it is also made by David kincaid.
To me ma a Scottish woman of Irish ancestry and my dad a proud scotsmen
This is awesome! Do you think you could do “free and green” as well?
I really want him to do Warren Zeiders ride the lightning. It's out of his element but I think his voice would kill it.
As much as I love this song (and cover great job) its weird that a 60 year old man is fighting in the war right? His dad died in 1798 and the American Civil War started in 1861. Ol Tim McDonald is in his 60s at the least.
Yeah it is strange, some people change the lyrics to 'grandfather'.
😃😃
You should totally do Battlecry of Freedom.
Hey Seth, what's been happening to your older songs? It seems the more I look, they more they keep disappearing. Like green fields of France, the fields of athenry(thank god you reposted a remastered), and a few others. I just want to know as I couldn't show some of my favorites to family recently. At least a pearl like seven seas is there still here. Either way, love everything man.
Apologies friend! I personally feel some of my older stuff isn't very good and I've been trying to release remastered versions or just rerecord some of them. I put Green Fields of France back up but will likely redo it at some point. Any others you were looking for?
@@sethstatonwatkins if that's how you feel, I understand. I just had some older family member who had parents in the world wars. As they went to Arlington earlier this year and saw the white crosses, it reminded me of it. If you wanted to wait and put out the remastered versions I wouldn't of cared since it's your passion. Ill show em that song in a moment now thanks. And keep on trudgin my friend.
Makes me wonder with the same last name as David if we’re kin
Isn't this the same tune as Bonnie Blue flag?
Yes, they both come from the song: Irish Jaunting Car
It wasn't the 1st shot and the 1st death of the war both Irish people on both sides of the war?
Im curious, after seeing your cover of "the idiot" and the words you put up at the end, would you be opposed to covering the internationale?
Good suggestion
@@sethstatonwatkins thank you, comrade

I don’t think that’s going to go over so well in this comment section.
SHERMAN YOU MISSED ONE
If people would actually study history and what started the civil war opinions would change. It was not over slavery, when the war started less than 5 percent of southerns owned slaves and there were 94 percent of southerners that opposed slavery. The Civil war was a war of northern aggression.
I'm 1/4 Irish and 2/4 Navajo and 1/4 Iroquois.
Soo I'm 1/4 white and 3/4 native American and rebellion runs in my blood.
