  • Writer-director Todd Field doesn't bring us a new film very often - his last one was 2006's 'Little Children' - but when he does, they are outstanding. His latest triumph, 'Tár', sees him tapping the incredible talents of Cate Blanchett to play a world-renowned composer and orchestra conductor at the top of her game whose life begins to spiral out of her control. Ahead of the film's release, RT editor Jacqueline Coley spoke with Field, Blanchett, and co-stars Sophie Kauer and Nina Hoss about working on the film, finding the balance between authentic realism and fantasy, and learning the intricacies of conducting an orchestra. Blanchett talks about the profound experience of communing with an orchestra during a performance, while Field explains how and why he wrote the role specifically for her, and Hoss and Kauer gush over working with the film's luminous star.

There were many times during this film when Blanchett simply vanished inside of Lydia Tar - no tricks of makeup or camera. She simply became someone else. It’s an astonishing gift.

I have been trying to watch some interviews with Cate after viewing Tar and this is the first with such a talented interviewer, who asks interesting questions and allows them to finish their thoughts. Brava.

I agree most interesting interview on Tar I have seen.
Todd & Cate just appear to be possibly tired of discussing similar conversations over and over. However enjoyed the questions asked and the inside view of the actors and their characters. 👏

I find it odd that Cate and Todd have different visions on how they met 🤷🏽🤦🏽....I'm going to go with Cate's version because she is a amazing actress who has to have a great memory to remember all those lines 😂

It was interesting that they put the conversation about Bach so early in the movie, since my love of Bach made me instantly identify with Lydia. What’s interesting is that by the end of the movie I’d completely changed my mind, not about Bach, but about separating the artist from her art.

Lydia might be a terrible person but that doesn't mean her argument wasn't sound. Dichotomy exists in every single human being. Just because a person falls to his dark impulses and did horrible things doesn't mean there wasn't goodness within him, and sometimes that goodness comes through in a person's art. Multiple non-contradictory truths could exist at once. I think we do not have to accept a person's abhorrent behaviors because his art is beautiful and vice versa.
The classroom scene summarises the movie for us. It asked a question, provided an answer, and asked another question.

Just saw Tar. Cate was a tour de force in the role, but the intellectual discussions on music and life are dense and confusing and I certainly will have to watch it more times to fully understand it. I will say that past all the gobbledygook the tape at the end showing Lenard Bernstein discussing the truth and real non adorned meaning of music is a stellar revelation .
