- Hey! Today I'm continuing this Whole House Declutter series... but this time, I'm in my closet!! This is episode 3, and I'm decluttering 2/3 of my clothes in today's video, in order to gain more peace & function!! P.s IMO you deserved 2 headband stands because you always wear them. Can't wait for the closet transformation whenever that might be. I've been in my place for 3 years and the closet has also been on our next project list for a while now.

Amanda, sometimes you seem hard on yourself during these decluttering videos. I am sure you felt the overwhelm, but from my point of view, your closet looked...normal. I mean, you have a giant closet compared to me, but my tiny closet gets just like this, and spills out onto the floor. It was all looking totally normal and relatable. I noticed this during the kitchen declutter; you have so much storage space in your kitchen, and I am sure you felt the overwhelm knowing all that space had slowly been filling up, but it's just totally normal. Do people really judge you in the comments for this? You seem worried that we are going to judge you, but lordy, you are doing all the hardwork to make your home feel better to you and your fam. Who would really judge you for that? No one you need to worry about. You inspire me with every new video! I guess 50 hangers.
Aww thank you so much for your sweet comment! The comment section is usually, mostly full of kindness… but you’d be surprised at some of the comments some people leave 😬 I’ve had to get comfortable in knowing that some people will only find something wrong with anything I do, but it definitely keeps me feeling a bit vulnerable 🫠 but sweet comments like this make any of those negative ones feel way less heavy 💗 so thank you!!
Hello Amanda, as always you bring another great video. My bathroom got flooded by a busted water heater so I am currently getting dried out with my closet but I’m slowly getting things uncluttered, it’s definitely a process. Your closet looked beautiful and you purged so much. I hope you have a blessed week. Looking forward to the next video 🥰♥️🌹🍁

Love to watch decluttering videos but man Amanda you can have more clothes than 33 shirts. I feel like if that’s all we could afford when we were younger then it one thing and. I get it but now we have worked hard for things and we deserve to have choices in our clothing. Of course if it really makes you feel better to have less clothes than I can appreciate that. I got rid of 60 pieces of clothing this past August and I could probably go through and get rid of some more. I like choices.

We have been working on decluttering our home. It has been taking weeks but we are making a lot of progress. My sister is a bit of a hoarder but has begun to feel buried by her “stuff” so I’m super proud of her!!

When I was a kid I would clean and declutter my closet whenever I was happy and now I do it whenever I am stressed - at the end I always feel a lot better - at least the surroundings are not as messed up as my life

Thank goodness you recommended Dana’s book. It is a life saver. I’ve listened to it twice!! She’s so relatable too and easy to listen too. I’ve started to implement it. Started as it’s going to take awhile to get through 60+ years of I may need that one day!!

Yes I do a lot of things well in the home making department, however I feel I can always learn more and do better.

I'm 74. Three(3) of us are in a 2BR apartment. I have very few clothes, my husband has some clothes, our daughter has the most. I do lots of crafts, each
craft has a plastic shoebox. I set limits on paper, yarn, fabric, ribbon, paint, etc. Tina, Al's wife
Great job! My guess is 100 hangers. I used to lock Christmas presents in the trunk of my car. I implemented a few things in the last year that have kept my closet decluttered and peaceful for a whole year and still going strong. 1. I refuse to buy more hangers, so if something comes in then something has to go out (I actually have a little stash of unused hangers because I decluttered so well). 2. Only clothing and clothing related items go in my closet (I made an exception for sheets). 3. Although I have the room for all of my clothes, I put off season clothes in garment bags or my cedar chest, just feels less cluttered that way. 4. I declutter and give everything a good dusting as I bring out the current season. 5. I'm meticulous when I put my clothes away so everything stays neat and peaceful. It was annoying at first but now I find it soothing and the tidiness makes me smile. The same rules apply to my dresser drawers as well. I did a massive declutter of my closet and drawers when I lost weight last year and it took days! I never want to do that again! I invested in good hangers, drawer dividers, and honeycomb sock things (great for tank tops too!) And I haven't had to even tidy a drawer since. Getting all my laundry done and neatly put away has become a weekend reset routine.
I’m in the process of changing out all of my hangers from plastic to the ones like you have. I knew I had a lot of tops (self admittedly shopaholic here) but oh my goodness! I cannot believe how many plastic hangers are lying on the bed in my spare room. Your closet looks amazing and I think you have been doing an incredible job of decluttering your house. I know how hard it can be letting things go because you know the money that was spent on it but you are so right when you said it was freeing! You’re giving me tons of motivation to keep going on my house! ❤️. PS - I’m going to go more in the 80 range for the number of hangers you got rid of!

I’ve been decluttering too. I live in a small town and we have one thrift store here and they have fallen in love with me because I have brought them so much stuff to sell and they are making money on it so I’m really happy about that. I’m decluttering my office and my spare bedroom. The kitchen is going next and then my living room.
We’re moving house in two weeks and these videos are keeping me motivated right now.. thank you so much ☺️
I totally understand what you mean about the container method of thinking, especially when it comes to clothing. I decided last year that I was only going to have a certain amount of hangers in my closet and once those were all used up, then I needed to go through my clothing every time I wanted to bring something new into my home. This has worked out, amazingly well for me and kept the clothing stock in my closet to a more manageable level. I actually even have space between my hangers, which is so satisfying to see when I open up my closet door.
I was happy to hear you credit Dana K White and her container method of decluttering. Her book, Decluttering at the Speed of Life totally changed my life and our home. I could feel my stress and anxiety lift as I filled bags of things to send to charity. It was fun seeing someone else use her container method to declutter. I loved your video. I’m decluttering as I switch our house from fall to Christmas decor. Watching your video as I go really helps me keep moving! Thank you!
WOW....AMAZING job Amanda! Your closet looks great. My closets are TINY and not walk in at all...I do have however the luxury of an office space with a closet so I have Spring/Summer in one closet and Fall/Winter in the other. In my closets, I don't have hanging rods but have a shelf with a curved piece underneath that only allows hangers to get hung in one direction. My solution was using black and white hangers. Everything got hung on black hangers and when I wore something and re-hung it, it went on a white hanger. My closets get decluttered every 6 months (so I have gone through either a Fall/Winter or Spring/Summer season) and all the black hangers get donated then the following declutter, the white hangers get donated. It works for me and I'm AMAZED at how much I think I'm going to wear and I don't! LOVE this series and look forward to your next area to declutter❤My hanger guess is 43

Hi Amanda, I'm also reading the same book. I have limited mobility (my back), a widow, 67, and raising my 3 grandsons and getting over covid. Needless to say, my plate is very full, but I wouldn't change raising these boys for the world. Anyway, I just wanted to say I stuff shift a lot and one habit I hope to break as I'm getting back to decluttering. Hopefully, as I get rid of stuff I will be able to find what's left homes. I really struggle making homes for things, and I just want to say thank you for making these videos for us. I know they will help me. Have a great week, and I will see you in the next one ❤❤
Something to help make it look cleaner/more spacious, because you have so much room in your closet you could single rail everything rather than double rail that way you won't have to long garments touching/dragging on the floor and it will open up the space by creating more floor space.

Wow great motivation ! You did great in your space! I have some rooms that need tackling! Oh for my birthday on Oct 17 my friend Daniela offered to come over on Oct 16 and helped me rearrange and better organize some clutter I had in my spare room. I wasn’t able to for a long time figure out how to even get started and she came over and next thing I know we got it more organized so that I can now tackle the items and start decluttering! She was a lifesaver!
One tip for those struggling to get started - have a friend who is highly efficient and a doer and get them involved in helping the process- sometimes just someone to come help organize things is motivation enough to get the ball rolling! It did for me! Now I know what section in the room needs tackling first and what areas have too many empty containers and can now get started on purging and decluttering!

Your closet is SO amazing before you touch anything! Mine is like 100x worse!! We did the hide the presents under blankets too! I’m guessing you had 62 hangers empty at the end.

Excellent job Amanda, you got rid of a lot. I think you probably had at least 75 empty hangers . I have that rule in my own closet anything coming in something has to leave. I even do that with our sock and underwear drawer. It just keeps things manageable.😊

I know this comment is for Amanda, but from one struggler to another, I feel you! It can feel very overwhelming to tackle. The best thing I did to help in my own process was ask for help. I actually asked my sister, I paid her in gas money and fed her lunch everytime she came to help me. It really got me out of my own head, and kept me accountable. It can be SO overwhelming, but having someone I trust working with me, and being a "voice of reason" has really kept me motivated.
The multiple hangers, thank you. I feel more normal now. I'm so bad with not getting rid of old clothes and getting more hangers. I don't have a huge closet like you do either so it gets cramped even faster.

I bet you got rid of 50 hangers. Exactly what I need to do!! I always forget to put my hangers opposite so I can see just what I never reach for. I am loving this series! We live in a ranch house with no basement! Uuggg! We downsized, boy, did we. But our clutter is the same amount. I need to start taking pics of before and afters. It would blow my mind and yours too. OMG I love the hanger trick!!! I have a guest closet that seems to get all the things I have no idea where it should go. Because of your video, I went to the closet and gave some things away and donated a lot of stuff. I found out our local VA would take all our old DVD movies so we took a large amount over and they loved them!! Thanks again for all the tips!!

No looking back and the appreciation to have a space that doesn't overwhelm you is a win. That's amazing! I am guessing you got rid of 175 hangers. It's impressive and it has given me the motivation to tackle 2 of my closets. I don't have nearly as much as you do but with my weight loss journey, I have clothes, coats and jeans that are too big. Hanging on to them is not rewarding. It could reverse my progress if I let it. No way 🤔 I also have some pieces that have seen better days. Byeeeee.
