The Fifth Element (1997) - 'The Diva Dance' scene [1080]

- Luc Besson's colourful sci-fi is loud and outrageous, but amidst the craziness there are a few moments of beauty. This is the most memorable one - an opera performance by a weird blue alien, which then segues into an action piece. The film makes full use of composer Eric Serra's standout piece 'The Diva Dance', by interspersing the opera scenes with the action happening elsewhere. It's one of a couple of highlights on an otherwise messy and grating soundtrack, but it's quite stunning.
Starring Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, Milla Jovovich, Chris Tucker, Ian Holm and Lee Evans. Directed by Luc Besson, with original music by Eric Serra. This scene starts off with a piece from 'Lucia di Lammermoor', an opera by Gaetano Donizetti, and then continues with 'The Diva Dance'. Both are performed by Inva Mulla Tchako. - Кино
This movie is so fucking weird and so awesome at the same time.
What an accurate description of my life growing up.
French directors they like to make odd films this is a classic though
@@ryans413 Lol I'm french maybe that's why I didn't find the movie that weird
YES
it's not particularly weird tho
Apparently Bruce Willis was not shown or told what he'd be listening to beforehand. His reaction to seeing a singer dressed up like Squidward but giving a performance with an angel-voice is completely genuine.
I can only pray that's true even though my Autism has trained me to expect a joke XD
Wait, you think there was an actual concert style scene with a love audience? Lmao that's not how they make movies. They are shot at different times
@@basketcas3717 *whoosh*
@@basketcas3717 Actually yes it was recorded at the Royal opera house in London. The scene was filmed with multiple cameras with all the extras in attendance. Luc knew how cool the music was and wanted real reactions from all the actors. The diva was played by Lucs then wife... Milla being his next wife. *cough* The recorded Diva song was played for her to mime and it was indeed the first time it was heard by essentially all the actors present including Willis. One of the films associate producers John Amicarell had the film negatives flown to hollywood to be transferred... an accident at the airport had all the film spill onto the tarmac with some of it being run over. He was able to salvage enough of it thankfully or they would have had to reshoot the entire scene.
Squidward 😂😂
The song was composed to be "technically impossible" for a human to sing, in order to sound more alien. However to the composer's surprise, Inva Mula's performance was astounding and needed only a little editing. The composer had estimated that she managed to sing 85% of the "technically impossible notes".
It wasn't the notes that were deemed impossible - it was the capacity to string the notes together in succession that was the challenge. The notes are her, but edited together to make a 'complete' performance.
@@SpinningSidekick my eun
But Dimash Kudaibergen sang this song perfectly

i hear some of callas behind this
This scene should have won an award for best sound
It's funny that people are just now finding out about it.
Well titanic won over this but this had better sound in my opinion
Titanic sound is legendary. I think both are great. They only shouldn't have compete in the same year xD
@@gonzalogauna46 Plavalaguna Reports CBS to Own Columbia Tristar CBS!
a shame movies are not made like this anymore... picture and music/sound in sync. It was a 90s thing. Now it's movie first then just soundtrack on top of it... and overrated soulless Zimmer makes all of them.
No one but the crew had any idea what the singer would look like. Willis' surprise is real.
Lol 🤣 no freakin way
true watch (The DIVA. Interview with actress)
I think Bruce was just told to clap at the end his reaction the whole time seemed real not acted
That's great !
Wait I thought this was all filmed in a sound stage with green screen, without the audience?
It seemed that way from the behind scenes photos anyways...
When I was a kid, this scene freaked me out. She was just so weird. Most underrated movie of all time.
that's why US government is hiding aliens from the public.
Same here scares me till this day honestly 🤣
This song is supposed to freak you out.
The original from Gaetano Donizetti's 'Lucia di Lammermoor' is sung by the title character Lucia, as she descends into madness.
This movie definitely wasn’t underrated 🤣🤣not at all!
Same here she was freaky
Funny how a character how had maybe 6 or 7 mins total air time could become the most popular character of the movie
It's what you do with that time is what makes you remembered.
I don’t know about favorite but she’s right up there with LeeLoo, Corbin Dallas and Zorg. Personally, I’d put her at #3 but that just my useless opinion.
I saw an interview with Maïwenn, the actress who portrayed her (not to be confused with Inva Mula, who did the vocals). She said that when she first saw the film she was disappointed because she was apparently not aware that so much of the performance wouldn't make it to the screen because of the fight happening at the same time - she felt that she was barely in the movie. However, she was also totally surprised by just how popular the character was anyway - I think she totally underestimated just how beautiful and memorable even those relatively few minutes are.
Now, Ruby Rhod is more popular
@@Avalikia that's how movie works. Hours of footage cut into a scene of mere minutes .
I love how it goes from a serious aria to a full-on dance track - and she rolls with both like a pro.
haha dude lol
,
I love how the movie is synched exactly to the action during the whole song.
I loved this scene as a kid. Later as I grew up, I got the feeling that the Diva was basically a prisoner on the cruise ship being forced to perform, and that she had some kind of empathic abilities, calling out to the audience for someone to help stop the Mangalores as they got closer, which is why her song gets more hurried and why she points to Corbin (as he shifts away, uncomfortably), and why the song gets so action-focused when Leeloo fights them.
She also knew she had the stones in her body. So she was either a prisoner like you said, or she was someone who believed she should sacrifice her own life to save billions of lives.
Hm, ever heard of "reading comprehension"? It's supposed to be mandatory in most public school systems and supposed to stop people from making their own fucked up interpretation of medias such as books or movies, and understand what the author meant.
@@Gonken88 that quite literally is not what reading comprehension is all about you absolute fucking pinecone. authorial intent is what youre talking about. and if not authorial intent, its extreme intensionalism. dont be such a prick if youre a fucking moron yourself.
@@rickdiculous4663 That is literally what it's about - comprehending what you are subjected to, but you didn't even make it that far.
@@Gonken88 This is a *movie.* There is very little _reading_ involved in a movie, and there is absolutely no text in this scene whatsoever. "Authorial intent" is indeed the correct phrase, and "reading comprehension" is not.
It was an interesting part of the movie because, they shot it during one take and no one knew what was happening nor have they ever seen her. So, they had them just sit there and listen and watch for the very first time.
Cornellious Parthenopaeus-Lumpkin The performance was recorded in front of a green screen separately from the other actors. They aren’t watching anything. Stop making shit up.

@will carter It is true. The actress who played the Diva told it herself in an interview.

This movie is aging like fine wine.
The vocal control...the range....the sound....FML it's perfect.
Yeah.. it was engineered sound for the movie. Check out a guy called Dimash tho, he can actually sing it
Definitely a midi keyboard at the end but at the beginning I agree
This Donizetti aria from his opera Lucia di Lammermoor is 85 pc sung by Inva Mula a great operatic soprano - and in the last ‘wild ‘ part it was computer re-arranged .
@@Musettina6 the Diva Dance song the woman who in the film actually provides the singing voice managed to hit 85% of the notes, something the composer thought was impossible. the other 15% of the notes had to be added in to the recording.
The song is supposed to be impossible for a human to sing (that low, to that high, that quickly) so it was edited together. A few people can come really close to singing as is, but not quite.
How did this not spawn its own sub genre of music? It’s freaking amazing!!!
If you want to hear something similar to this, check out Tout Petit Moineau by Igorrr
the range is amazing lol
I mean this single handedly inspired Vitas - 7th element, hence the name
If you want more music like this, I recommend giving Fertile Rondo from Bayonetta 3 and MATERIALIZE from My-Hime a listen!
Look at davos
She knew this would be her last performance and just gave it her all.
This woman is one of the best "Sopranists" worldwide !!
She is one of only 3 woman WORLDWIDE, mastering 8 octaves as a woman!
The bass is a hard frequency to a sopranist, especially for a woman!
She has beautiful voice and her appearance is quite sexy too I love this scene so much.
Iconic scene.

How wtf 😂
Great performance,singing and sound !
The fact she is able to move so quickly with 4 stones shoved in her is quite impressive
Dude...LMFAO
But TRUE though but LMFAO XD
Her vocals and ranges were phenomenal. This was my favorite part
yeah, thought the most wildest parts were created with sound editing, it has been said that the real singer (not the actress who plays the Diva, which is Maïwenn btw) managed to sing about 85% of the song by herself.
Im convinced this whole movie was created for this scene, to be understood in context.
I feel like I am at a futuristic alien opera, genuinely.
Wish there was a restaurant that served a meal and did this song lol i would go

I remember watching this specific scene as a kid. It felt so weird, like a mix of being terrified and mesmerized at the same time. Haven’t seen this in years!! Still felt the same way
It's such a simple pleasure, but I find it so satisfying when Leeloo's hits are synchronized with the beat at the beginning and end of the dance part of the song!
That low to high note is incredible

Agreed!!! It’s a blessing to share this planet with such talented people.
Like most talented directors, he forgot what made his movies a success and relied too much on action heavy/CGI spectacle rather than clever practical effects and good writing. They all make the same mistake.
Even now, years later, this remains one of my favourite movie fight scenes 😊
what one does it remind you of?
Likewise!
its so good
Back when the 25th anniversary dvd was released, I was one of about 10-15 strangers who stood watching this on one of those little tvs they used to hang in video stores. We watched the whole movie despite having obviously seen it before. Many of us were saying lines right along with the characters and we all had a good time.
25th? Movie is 23 years old.
Who wants a *DVD* anyway?
It will be an AV remastered UHD Blu-ray with HDR, Dolby Vision, and Dolby atmos.
The movie is now 25 years old
i remember watching this movie with my mother , i used to ask her to fast forward it to this part of the movie every single time just so that i could watch this mesmerizing scene over and over again. the most funky opera i have seen
I have watched this movie how many times as a younger person, and it wasn't until recently that I noticed the tears in Corbin's eyes when he first heard her start. "Real men don't cry" -- my butt. You're telling me that Corbin Dallas is not a real man? True awe knows no gender.
The best movie, so si-fi and this scene is marvelous
I loved this scene when I was younger
I still do
This entire scene , Just bad ass. This in particular scene made me appreciate opera music because whenever I see an opera on tv, I always will think of this scene.
Such a powerful scene in this movie. I'm so glad this movie has been catching on to a lot of people in recent years. It certainly deserves it. It's phenomenal
Diva was barely 10 min in the film. But she is the most memorable! She became unofficial icon.
As a kid I was not really into this scene, because I felt, at the time, that slowed the pacing of the movie a bit, but now as an adult, I have found that this scene is absolutely enjoyable and it flows so amazingly
I don't know if people are aware of this - Diva Plavalaguna name was given because Luc Besson spent many summers in Porec, Croatia, in a hotel resort named Plava Laguna. It still exist's even today. He spent many summers there with his family as a kid.
I'm only here because of Bayonetta 3
This movie was better than Star Wars imo
Yes

2024 and still one of my all time favorite movies ..I hope on everything they do t try to remake this.. leave it as it is
There are a lot of misinterpretations about this song going on in these comments! So just to clarify, it’s only the last part of the song, ie, the dance part, where the singer had to record some notes separately, which were then arranged digitally to sound as though they were sung together. This was because it was deemed technically impossible for the human voice to hit some high notes in quick succession of one another (although some singers have since come close to achieving it).
However, the beginning part, an aria called “Il dolce suono”, taken from the opera “Lucia di Lammermoor”, was all sung naturally. Also, the actress playing the alien singer Diva Plavalaguna, is not the actual singer. The actress who played her is called Maïwenn Le Besco, but the (opera) singer, who provided the vocals, is called Inva Mula.
This is still such an iconic scene.
I saw this in the cinema at age 13. Amazing will never forget watching it for the first time
Does anyone notice the Diva is mimicking and singing about Leelou during her fight? Basically since the beginning she was singing abt the whole scene!! Why this will always be in my top 3 movies..Absolutely fuckin brilliant!!!!!!!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Yes. I think the Diva sees what is happening to the “supreme being” and her singing reflects the emotions of it.
