Wow very interesting I lived in Louth until I was 17 years old. Can not remember learning about this in school. I'm 70 year's old now and just learning about it. Big thanks from me.
Great video. I had heard about the flood but never realised the extent or the huge loss of live. That must have been a terrible time for the town with losses of WW1, then Spanish flu, then this. It must have been very traumatic.
Well done Louth Council and Dr Richard Gurnham. This serves as a great indicator that people can overcome adversity no matter how bad. It is actually uplifting to watch and wonder how they and we now manage.
The photo of the man clinging to the lamp post was taken by my uncle, William Matthews. His younger brother recalls "the man on the post was a railwayman on his way home with his weeks wages in his coat, which he tried to pass to people in the window, but lost it in the flood.".
Lets hope flood preventative measures taken will avoid such a catastrophe again....because another extreme wet weather event will undoubtably at some time happen.
