Well she was born in Budapest, so she is of the Hungarian side of the clan. But she also holds Austrian citizenship. I guess as soon as she enters Austria she becomes Ildiko Habsburg-Lothringen. Like her uncle Karl, the current head of the Habsburger in Austria.
I noticed many went with tousled loose curls. I feel like it would’ve been better if some of them did more with their hair, as in had actual hairstyles or updos. It would’ve elevated their looks, and made them feel more completed and put together.
I agree, I said they wore their everyday hair style . This was so show how young and hip they are. But instead made them look like they were wearing their moms' dress in playing dress up.
It's to signify youth. For people who are particular about 'old culture' only married women put their hair up in a bun. Though I'm not saying they specifically want to avoid the taboo, it just unconscious decision.
I was thinking about that too, Angelina Jordan's signiture look is actually a very poofy high up-do, but I guess they didn't want to make it look like she is just there to sing idk?
Lissie Selassie's dress is also extremely reminiscent of traditional Ethiopian dresses (particularly habesha kemis) which are often of a very light and diaphanous white fabric with lots of gathers and pleats. So as well as being very debutante old world vibes, I would say her dress is a clear nod to traditional Ethiopian women's dresses

The photographer is a big no for me. If I had seen these photos before they were published it would have been a reshoot. You can’t do these girls like that.
About Angelina Jordan. She won "Norway's got talent" at age seven, singing old jazz Billie Holiday style such musicality and feeling, she was an instant star. At age 12, she was invited to perform (among many other events) at Quincy Jones 85th birthday celebration at the London O2. Pretty cool, huh? She writes a lot of her own music and is reminiscent of Amy Winehouse. She is perhaps the only one of all of the debs who is not really a nepo baby, but does come from a family of artists. As for fashion, she often performs in retro outfits with 50's, 60's feel.
She’s genuinely talented and I love you commented about her!! Also, fun fact, she’s got naturally brown eyes but these blue ones she rocks are so gorgeous! I remember seeing her on Norway’s got talent, she was so amazing and her rendition of Nancy Sinatra’s bang bang is STILL the version I prefer over all others :)
Here's the deal, if you like watching fashion. Like couture fashion. These are the women the designers are marketing to. They are a necessary part of the ecosystem. I just wish that they had hired a hair stylist. Maybe it's me getting old, but I'm tired of all this long, unstyled hair.
I feel like the gowns are spectacular, but the styling and the fits are just not right for some of the girls, and the HAIR YES. Like the Princess in the long blue dress just dissolves in this huge gown with this color. And I loved her smile and how she seemed to have fun(I think I like her the most from all I’ve seen), but the dress really made her look odd. Same for others, dresses are just swallowing them whole.
I do like that you didn't body shame or embarrass the girls and seemed like you tried to find something positive to say about them. A lot of them might be from richer than we can imagine families, but most of them are still kids and under 18. Adult nepo babies are fair game.

Went to school in a private international boarding school from grade 6 to 12. In Geneva, Switzerland I know several girls i went to school including with 3 friends of mine who attended this very ball at the Ritz in Paris 😅 This is like the fanciest debutante ball you can ever attend, my parents fine but there’s definitely a certain pedigree and level of amounted wealth to be selected to attend. I got dragged into the deb ball experience in 1990. My family was lower working class, but my great uncle's masonic lodge held a ball every year and he didn't have a daughter, so....Bright white satin and lace, floor length full, scalloped skirt with bows, sweetheart neckline, leg o' mutton sleeves, picture budget 80s bride on a barely pubescent body that came nowhere close to filling out the bust. In England, debutante balls were a way for the young ladies of the first five hundred to be presented to the monarch. It happened once a year. Women wear tiaras not crowns. Crowns are for monarchs.
Can't believe you mentioned Yvette Yao's grandmother and uncle, but not the fact that apparently her dad is the current head of finance at Alibaba? Her great grandfather was also apparently a big shipping magnate.
The JPG dress on Lara --- Donnersmark reminds me of the 1996 "Romeo and Juliet" movie with Leonardo DiCaprio. The heart over sun flare, a little metallic and Juliets flowing dress. It screams teen/YA drama queen. If you stare at the picture too long her hair even starts to look like the white angle wings.
Baz Lurman’s Romeo and Juliet was also inspired by Renaissance Christian iconography, that’s probably why it seems so familiar. Beautiful looking film and a beautiful dress. I enjoyed your comparison of her hair being like Angel wings, or perhaps like Botticelli’s cherubs, keeping with the theme. 😊
Pulling from that 2007 JPG collection seems like it was THE move. And close to the 2010s had some stunning haute couture. If I was a nepo deb I'd be doing everything in my power to wear Alexander McQueen from that era ❤
I will dream of the 2007 JPG look for the rest of my life, girlie was looking ETHEREAL and she’d worn the look before!!! we love a nepo baby that’s not afraid to repeat outfits, yes queen!!!!
Growing up in the South, Debutante Balls were and still are a staple in the monied classes. The worst thing I ever commented on was to a customer about how antiquated the practice was. I likened it to a cattle call, parading the girls around like a bunch of virgins, with the parents looking towards a good merger of money than a good marriage. The ball has been moved from Spring break to Thanksgiving Friday because the girls would have rather gone to the beaches, which meant that I had to work on Thanksgiving Day and that wasn't sitting well with me all on its own. The mom sorta agreed, but the only thing that the dad heard was that I said that his daughter wasn't a virgin. Shoe fit, I think.
Your comment made me smile. I appreciate your candor and bluntness. Rich or not so rich Southern young ladies LOVE Spring Break. It is a wonderful chance for their legs to do an imitation of warm peanut butter and spread easily. 😉
I live in LA and while in California it's not a big thing, I still sold so many dresses for debutantes when I worked in a bridal shop. We sold evening gowns too, but they'd come in and specifically look at the wedding dresses because they all had to wear white or ivory as a symbol of their purity. It was always so weird and the moms always seemed to hate it
Heyyy Lukee , so, I’m Greek the name of the designer is actually KRITHARIOTI, and yes the shipping industry along with the tourism industry are the two main ( and only really) industries in Greece, from which you can make a more than decent living. It’s a very hard industry to get into and if you do so it’s very difficult to “survive” because of nepotism.
@@ering7530 helloo, I don’t believe it’s a straight reference to the shipping industry, since if that was the case she could’ve used something different on the dress, it she could’ve taken it to the environmental side . I believe it’s a reference to sea and the endless treasures that can be found in Greece❤️
I was looking at tons of photos of these girl’s fashion on TikTok and instagram and I passively thought “I hope Haute le Mode reviews this”. I’m so excited!!!
8:30 Natan is pronounced in french. The dress was actually designed to look like moss as Natan had real moss dresses as showcase in their shops. Also it's rather a 2 piece than a dress. My mother had to take debutante classes and ended up joining the military and having three kids with a biker..... So something about debutante affairs feels personal to me. My poor, deeply conflicted mother. Trying to teach etiquette to a couple heathens. Never worked. Nowadays "Le Bal" is more about charity.. this year it benefited two organizations: "World Central Kitchen" and "Necker-Enfants Malades Hospital". All dresses provided by respective designers; jewelry provided by V Muse (all pieces very old, expensive and with history).
You think he knows that? Most of his videos are very informed when it comes to his opinion. But I find him often lacking in knowledge when it comes to events and the reasons for them.
I'm obsessed with Eden's Green Mossy Dress: her hair just doesn't do it justice. (I have curls so that's not the issue) The issue is length and volume. She should have fluffed and teased or gone with extensions (thick ones) and made her hair really long and wavy (like a fairy in a garden of moss). Maybe put some jewels in the hair (like woven in). And done a dramatic eye (something whimsical). Elizabeth of S.C. YOU GO GIRL WITH YOUR WORK AND CUTE DRESS!!!! Love that for her. Loving some of these women not just being NEPO and actually doing real things. Roxie Zhao is giving "Isabela from Encanto" when she changes her dress to punk and I like it.
Agree 100% regarding the mossy dress. Whimsical jewelry or hair acc would've complimented the look so well. I was envisioning a big loose curly updo (like Minnie Driver as Anne Bonny in Our Flag Means Death) but I love the long flowing hair idea as well!
Angelina Jordan won the AGT Norwegian at either seven or eight years old, and she just flew off from there. She’s currently under Heidi’s wing. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if Heidi (Klum) had something to do with her dresses.
Loved this! Yes, please do last year's ball. I'm glad you're being considerate to the kiddos. Have to say the Armani Prive, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Elie Saab are the best imo 😊
It is difficult to roast this age group (assuming teens or early 20's?), but I think that Luke did it properly. He just commented on the dress. Well, yes money was mentioned several times, but it sounds like the majority of the participants had extremely well-connected and wealthy ancestors (aka parents and grandparents). I love galas! Some participants get it on-point, some get it average and well some try very very intensely so A for their effort.😉
What I love about Luke is that he explains why certain looks weren’t exactly a hit and what could have been done to make it better. Is so easy to tear people apart but is way harder to give proper reasoning and an educated suggestion.
With the money they spent in the clothes, some of them could pay more attention to the hair style, because it would really elevate the looks and enhance their beauty. For now it seems they just didn't put enough of budget in the hair.
Random nepo baby fact: Lori Harvey and Ava Phillipe (AKA Steve Harvey’s step-daughter and Reese Witherspoon’s daughter) were debs for the 25th Bal des Débutantes in 2018
Youd think Reese Witherspoon with her feminist branding wouldnt go anywhere near a debutante ball.. like girl thats for marrying off inexperienced girls to your rich friends wtf lol
It's great to see non film events. Feels like it's always award shows we get reviews of. No with social media expanding coverage it's good to see what actually gets worn to these events. Ty Ty ty
Luke, thanks for this. I first heard of these balls about 30 years ago when they were covered in Town and Country magazine. I think the magazine covers the ball each year. The debs have always worn high fashion gowns, although as you say, the very rich often have very bad taste. But that is changing nowadays with the younger set, but not quickly enough as we can see from some of the gowns!
That Jean Paul Gaultier dress is amazing. I also like the green Greek taffeta dress with the starfish, it looks like waves, 🌊so perfect for the heir of a shipping family.
I would love to have a moment in which you discuss the couture options of the escorts. As escorts they are meant to blend into the background and I notice they have a rather structured and formal way of presenting themselves. I would like to hear about how they display their own uniqueness within that very narrow range of options. I thought the lovely man in the kilt with the fishes did a spectacular job of breaking away from the mundane. Also I am a HUGE fan of masculine pulchritude.
I was a debutant, not at this level, and where we did it, it was a year of charity work, team building and learning about our community which was really a great tool for 16 year olds to get out of their comfort zone and be dynamic and a part of something bigger than themselves. Yes, we had a ball but it was just a school dance, and there was none of the being presented to society. It was more a recognition of our hard work and diligence for the year. We really did a lot for our community, and the school and debs continue to do so.

Form your own opinions, your own preferences. So what if a youtuber doesn't agree with your taste? By all means: learn what you want to know about fashion but never forget that you form your OWN opinions and those may or may not align with other people. Explore, experiment and find your own tastes and be confident.
Just so you know a little more about Angelina Jordan, Yes she won Norway"s Got Talent when she was 8 years old but her winnings she donated to a children's charity as well as raising 21 million Euro for other children's charities she is also the youngest published author in Norway when she was 9 years old. it is the story of when she was 6 years old, meeting a young homeless girl in the Middle East who had no shoes, she gave her her favorite shoes she was wearing and sparked her interest in raising money for children's charities. And yes she is an amazing singer. She would have been much more famous but her parents wanted her to have a somewhat normal childhood, turning down Disney, and many others who wanted to sign her to a contract. Her parents would let her sing at charities, and some summer concerts. Nora Jones had her open a concert for her to 40 thousand fans, Quincy Jones had her sing "Fly Me To The Moon" this 85th Birthday gala. She has been signed by Republic Records at 14 but they promised not to promote her till she turns 18 which is next month January 10th. They have built Angelina her own studio in LA.
Fun fact about Ethiopia’s dress, it’s very similar to our cultural dress of pure white cotton, that flows and ruffles at the bottom with either a cross or flower motif for Christian and Muslims respectively.
i agree, the colour and the cut both seem really classic, vintage type elegant:) but as a Hungarian i got a bit flabbergasted the title Princess of Hungary would still exist haha
I love it when designers use Catholic artwork and religion as an inspiration for fashion (i'm catholic btw). Dolce and Gabanna are catholics and they use their religion as an inspiration for some of the most beautiful pieces.
Ildikó Habsburg-Lothringen with the long title of Princess of Hungary and Archducess of Austria has a funny title since both Austria an Hungary no longer have a royal family and haven't had one for a little over a 100 years. The Habsburgs did rule the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, but the monarchy ended after WW I. after the Treaty of Trianon. Interesting video as always, but you've shown Helena Bonham Carter more than the actual debutante and for the first few seconds, since you've shown HBC I thought that that girl looked eerily just like her and was maybe her daughter or something.
Fun facts: the most famous member of the Empirikos ship owning family was actually... a surrealist poet! (one of the first in Greece, Andreas Empirikos). Really surreal! Its customary that debs borrow the dresses and possibly also the bijoux. I attended Le Bal's 1998 edition as a guest, not a debutante, and the crowd was old money which means everyone was unassuming, unpretentious and simply enjoying a lovely, civilized soirée.
Love this dude's fashion commentary -- - hilarious, and for the most part on point. But I totally disagreed about the Princess of Hungary's dress - I thought it was gorgeous. It had a subtle masculinity to it that I found intriguing. Dowdy? Not at all. I thought modern, sleek, forward, a bit business like, but the play of light and dark across the metallic blue is beautiful, and it framed her fresh good looks perfectly.

The photographer is a big no for me. If I had seen these photos before they were published it would have been a reshoot. You can’t do these girls like that.
I agree, the candid ones are better lmao
About Angelina Jordan. She won "Norway's got talent" at age seven, singing old jazz Billie Holiday style such musicality and feeling, she was an instant star. At age 12, she was invited to perform (among many other events) at Quincy Jones 85th birthday celebration at the London O2. Pretty cool, huh? She writes a lot of her own music and is reminiscent of Amy Winehouse. She is perhaps the only one of all of the debs who is not really a nepo baby, but does come from a family of artists. As for fashion, she often performs in retro outfits with 50's, 60's feel.
Love her voice and her music!
Huh, that’s neat
huge respect honestly🫶🏻
She’s genuinely talented and I love you commented about her!!
Also, fun fact, she’s got naturally brown eyes but these blue ones she rocks are so gorgeous!
I remember seeing her on Norway’s got talent, she was so amazing and her rendition of Nancy Sinatra’s bang bang is STILL the version I prefer over all others :)
True beauty comes from the heart anyway. When Angelina sang for the nobel peace prize laureate, no dress and no money in the world can beat that.
Here's the deal, if you like watching fashion. Like couture fashion. These are the women the designers are marketing to. They are a necessary part of the ecosystem.
I just wish that they had hired a hair stylist. Maybe it's me getting old, but I'm tired of all this long, unstyled hair.
Laras hair is the only one that looks styled, and if it wasn't the whole outfit wouldn't have looked nearly as cohesive.
I had the same thought. Their hairstyle is so messy, and like they were going shopping. Classy? Not!
Defending the status quo.
For anyone who might be confused: at 24:34 the image is of Helena Bonham Carter, not Louisa Dub
Thank you. I was really thinking I'm crazy😂
hahaha thanks! I thought I was tripping

Lol I was gunna be like 'thats crazy she looks exactly like HBC' 😂

I do like that you didn't body shame or embarrass the girls and seemed like you tried to find something positive to say about them. A lot of them might be from richer than we can imagine families, but most of them are still kids and under 18. Adult nepo babies are fair game.
He’s kind even when you can tell by his expressions how much he wants to rip something to shreds
Agreed, he was not as scathing as I wish he was this time, even if I've commented on the opposite before 😅and yeah, there's def a difference between celebrities/ models we're used to seeing and people who are just rich. I don't buy the saying "you're not ugly, you're just poor."
He's never body shamed anyone tho even in his finest roasts.
so once someone turns 18 you get a free pass to be mean to them
What on earth was there to body shame??!! This was a strictly no-fatties affair.
It used to be a lot of old money types and royals but also now famous parents with one spouse that fits some of the criteria can also have their kids selected 😂

Mortifying for my teenage goth self!
Masonic lodge? Yikes!😬

Yessss, please do last year! I’d even love to see a video on the evolution of debutante fashion.
Ooh, yes please!
Yes!
In England, debutante balls were a way for the young ladies of the first five hundred to be presented to the monarch. It happened once a year. Women wear tiaras not crowns. Crowns are for monarchs.
we do not have respect for the colonial country, nepo babies of old and new, nor the sexist tradition..
Yep, for the harem
I’m guessing you didn’t get a look at Queen Elizabeth II?
that would be the monarch part @@FernBlackwood1995
@@FernBlackwood1995Lizzie wore tiaras and crowns. Non monarchs get to wear tiaras or coronets. Hope that explains things a bit.
Can't believe you mentioned Yvette Yao's grandmother and uncle, but not the fact that apparently her dad is the current head of finance at Alibaba? Her great grandfather was also apparently a big shipping magnate.
The threads hanging off the Lanvin dress's hem at that price had me weeping
Same! Get some snips
Yesssss! You're absolutely correct!
@@rubybuttons668 very true! Such a gorgeous look
Pulling from that 2007 JPG collection seems like it was THE move. And close to the 2010s had some stunning haute couture. If I was a nepo deb I'd be doing everything in my power to wear Alexander McQueen from that era ❤
Thank you for your kind word about the choice of the JPG dress 🙏❤
Lmao of course that's what the dad would care about💀
South of what lol?!
@@sam-vh2vm The US, Augusta Georgia to be exact.
It’s a very hard industry to get into and if you do so it’s very difficult to “survive” because of nepotism.
would you consider maybe the starfish decoration on her dress is a nod to the sea/shipping industry? i am curious what you might think. thank you.
@@ering7530 helloo, I don’t believe it’s a straight reference to the shipping industry, since if that was the case she could’ve used something different on the dress, it she could’ve taken it to the environmental side . I believe it’s a reference to sea and the endless treasures that can be found in Greece❤️
@@fedrapispitsou that makes a lot of sense, thank you

Natan is pronounced in french. The dress was actually designed to look like moss as Natan had real moss dresses as showcase in their shops. Also it's rather a 2 piece than a dress.
Natan is a belgian couture house who dress the belgian as well as dutch royals (and some other european royals have worn them as well)
I had the honor to be an intern at the company
The princess from Ethiopia is also likely referencing the white dresses and robes used in Ethiopian formal occasions
My mother had to take debutante classes and ended up joining the military and having three kids with a biker..... So something about debutante affairs feels personal to me. My poor, deeply conflicted mother. Trying to teach etiquette to a couple heathens. Never worked. I know she would be proud that I turned out a campy hard femme bisexual as opposed to a boring rich wife lol
really interested in reviews of these more niche events. would love to see a review of the game awards 2023 fashion. there were some pretty banger looks on and off the stage.
Lmao it's not about charity, it's about sickeningly rich people hanging out with the excuse of charity.
“People with long names, get that shit under control” lollll

The formerly imperial family Habsburg-Lothringen of Austria-Hungary has received no taxpayers' money since they were deposed in 1918/1919.
Luke! The necklace on Hannah Husain is the famous Orléans Emerald Necklace.

24:23 I was confused here for a minute at Helena Bonham Carter but then I realised you just got the pictures mixed up a bit

I love these videos. I like seeing how runway haute couture translates onto the bodies of the people who can afford these frocks.
I can't believe it's still a thing.

The great thing about the arts, is that you can form your own opinions. Fashion is art and art is subjective. So when you like something and you know why; that's all you need!

Exactly, Lynette, Angelina is there because she earned it as as an amazing singer/songwriter, not because she is royalty or from some rich family.
Fun fact about Ethiopia’s dress, it’s very similar to our cultural dress of pure white cotton, that flows and ruffles at the bottom with either a cross or flower motif for Christian and Muslims respectively.

Charity, she donated the 80,000 dollars she won on Norway’s Got Talent
Angelina Jordan won Norway’s Got Talent at the age of 8 in 2014, the prize for winning was eighty thousand dollars, this money was donated to children’s charities. At age 8 her first charity performance was in Germany to raise money for heart disease. Again, at age 8 she does a telethon for Plan International Children’s Charity. Still at age 8 she performs for Norwegian Sea Rescue Society Charity. On the 12th of Dec still at age 8, she performs at Save The Child Nobel Peace Prize, 4 days later, even though she has a very bad cold, she performs for the Swedish Heroes Foundation against her doctor's orders. At age 10 she performed for the Norwegian Refugee Council Charity. Also age 10 she performed in Seoul in South Korea for Rotary International to raise money for children’s vaccinations. Angelina Jordan comes from a very wealthy family and does need the money, she, and her family want to share her wonderful talent with the world. This is what makes AJ and her family so very special. This information was on Alan's Pod Cast.
