  • Legend Carole King wrote or co-wrote over 2 dozen hits for other people before she got a chance to record her own record... With husband Gerry Goffin.... Goffin King was the songwriting team of the 60s. In the 70s when she wanted to go solo the only problem is SHE HATED the sound of her own voice. She was criticized by some in the industry about it saying it was hoarse and too thin. One night legendary singer-songwriter James Taylor put her on the spot and pushed her to record a song she’d written for a famous group… She Killed it. This opened the door for a solo Record that would rival any artist or band in the 70s… Carole King's Tapestry with major hits like I Feel the Earth Move, So Far Away, It’s Too Late and You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman all were hits and made it a 70s vinyl classic. Carole King became a singer songwriter for the ages and the first woman to spend so many weeks at #1 on the billboard charts. She also had 24 hit before she was 20. The story is next on professor of rock.

One of the most prestigious albums of the Rock Era was performed and composed by a prolific songwriter that hated her voice and was scared to death to sing on a stage. You’re about to hear one of the great stories in music history. Calling Carole King precocious would be a gross understatement. The destiny of her greatness could barely await her adolescence. By the time she was 15 years old, she was already a promising songsmith working at the famed Brill Building in Times Square.
At 16, she graduated from high school and enrolled in Queens College in New York. She met and fell instantly in love with a young lyricist named Gerry Goffin, and the couple married when Carole was just 17, and Gerry was a mere 20. At 18, she had co-written a #1 pop smash. With Gerry penning the words, and Carole scripting the music, the songwriting duo of Goffin & King became one of the most prodigious in popular music history.
When Lennon & McCartney began to take over the universe with The Beatles, and were asked what they aspired to be, they answered that they "wanted to be the Goffin/ King of the UK.” The Goffin/ King partnership composed 24 Top 40 pop hits, many of which are standards that have been covered many times beyond their original recordings. After 10 years of marriage, Carole & Gerry divorced in the late 60s. Carole moved from NYC to Los Angeles to start a new life- professionally & personally.
By 1970 Carole met James Taylor and became the pianist in his touring band. On one fateful night in ‘70, JT surprised Carole by telling her before the show that she was going to do a solo performance of “Up on a Roof”, one of the classic pop hits that she co-wrote with her ex-husband, Gerry Goffin.

When Tapestry came out, I was on the road with my band The Gringos. At that time the band featured a female vocalist and our leader and arranger, did a fantastic arrangement of Beautiful from that album. Years later when my daughter was not quite 9 years old, she appeared on Star Search and performed Someone Who Believes in You, from Kings City Streets album. Permission was needed in order to perform the song so my daughter wrote her a note that the Television producer, (Sam Riddle) took to Carol, and she wrote my daughter a very lovely note back, giving that permission to sing her song and that she would be watching the show. My daughter went on win that particular show.

Remembering the song about her mother reading her magazines totally brings back where I was at that time. I think that throwaway McCartney Uncle Albert song was all over the radio too. Listening to her here, I think if some random person showed up with that voice it wouldn't take her very far. With some luck it's got enough character for pop or rock, but more than that were the songs. It was the day of the singer/songwriter and she had the goods.

Just two years removed from "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies? She not only felt the earth move under her feet, but she moved the entire music industry forward.

    • @billdaverne9389
      @billdaverne9389 8 месяцев назад

The great thing about radio then is that Sugar, Sugar (a great pop song, actually) could share the airwaves with Carole, James Taylor, Harry Chapin, Jim Croce and those others who came along to share their insightful magic.Since then, as an audience, we've been diced and spliced and while some classic rock stations aren't 100% bad we no longer have the breadth we had between 1965 and 1975... as "consultants" took over... An advantage of 2 and 3 minute records is you didn't have to change stations.

In a concert several years ago, James told the story how he heard Carole sing "You've Got a Friend" and ran downstairs to hear it all. He said he asked to record it. "I didn't know I'd be singing it every night for the rest of my life!" he said, to a laughing crowd. Then, under his breath, he said, "Could be worse." It was an amazing anecdote, sure, but the level of self-awareness was awesome, too.

It was my anthem album, my go to when I needed to be uplifted and when I badly needed a good cry. I sang, danced, drove and made love to this album. I introduced my daughter to this masterpiece in utero. She was vocalizing to it before she could talk. She, in turn, passed the love of this album to her daughter. It became a family heirloom and tradition. We may not have a lot of money, but we have Carole King. "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" feature not just background vocals by James Taylor, but also by fellow Laurel Canyon resident Joni Mitchell, who you noted was recording "Blue" in another studio in that building. I love Carole King's version of this song. A songwriter always seems to be in touch with the emotion behind the song.

Among my top 5 albums of all time. I played Tapestry at work one day (my co-workers all being 20-somethings) and although they had never heard the album, they knew EVERY track by other artists. That was nearly 50 years after Tapestry's 1971 release. They didn't know the artist or the album, but they knew every song well enough to sing along.
I'm proud to say that each of them own the album now (Thank you iTunes).
It continues to make the earth move under my feet and is a constant reminder of how good it is to know you have a friend (regardless of one being a natural woman or just a Smackwater Jack looking for a little confrontation!
And it has become the soundtrack of at least a few of the next generation who have crossed my path (along with Rikki Lee Jones' Chuck E's in Love and Joni Mitchell's Lady of the Canyon. - I gave them no choice.)

I remember hearing the album played by my mother when I was young, and I always liked it. In 1985, when I was 20 years old and serving on a U.S. destroyer in the Mediterranean Sea, I met the woman who would become my wife in Haifa, Israel. She was an American who missed the music she always listened to on the radio in America, so I gave her two cassette tapes of music. One tape was of recordings I made for her, and the other was Carole King's Tapestry. Yes, I actually had it among the cassettes that I took with me. To my mind, it is the single best record ever produced by a female solo artist. My future wife loved it and was so glad to have it. Anyway, we are going to celebrate our 37th wedding anniversary this year. As I'm sure you can imagine, my wife and I still listen to that record from time to time. It is not only outstanding, but it also holds great memories for us.

Tapestry is an album for the ages. You noted that an elite group of musicians were brought together for the recording and that Joni and James were also working in the same building. Not only did James Taylor provide backing vocals he also provided guitar parts. Joni sang backing vocals on "Will You Love Me Tomorrow". During the recording of Tapestry, James was working on his album "Mudslide Jim and the Blue Horizon" and Joni was working on her album "Blue". James Taylor played on all three of the albums and Joni sang on all three. Of the session musicians, Drummer Russ Kunkel played on all three albums, Danny (Kootch) Kortchmar played on Tapestry and Mud Slide Jim and the Blue Horizon. Russ Kunkel, Danny Kortchmar, along with Leland Sklar, who played bass on Mud Slide Jim and the Blue Horizon, were part of a collection of session players that became know as "The Section". Currently Russ, Danny, Leland (Lee) are playing with a band called "The Immediate Family" along with other past members of "The Section", keyboardist Craig Doerge, and guitarist Waddy Wachtel.
Documentary Film Maker, Danny Tedesco, has produced a film called "The Immediate Family" that follows the work and lives of these legendary 70's session musicians featured on some of the most iconic records of that time. Danny Tedesco also produced the documentary "The Wrecking Crew".

What the critics missed is the fact that those qualities also gave her voice a vulnerable, frail quality that draws you right in. Carol’s voice makes Tapestry into an engaging and warm favorite for me, a guy who rocked more to Deep Purple and James Gang at the time!
