    Cindi’s music means the world to me. My daughter,Meredith, was diagnosed with leukemia she was only two. She loved Cindi’s voice and the way she dressed. I had old crinolines she wore over her ballet clothes and she rocked it every time she heard Cindi’s voice.
    Meredith passed away at seven. Meredith’s sister Stacie was able to meet Cindi and told her just how much those escape’s meant to us. Cindi stood, wrapped her arms around Stacie and held her as they both cried. She is such a gentle soul. Thank You
    Sincerely,Mom

      I feel exactly the same way. My mom was very sick in 1985 and had a large tumour removed from her brain. Her odds of surviving surgery were 50/50. I will always connect this song with those feelings. She’s going strong today at 78 years old. Cyndi Lauper will always have a Beth special place in my ❤. She’s a wonderful role model for all people and a beautiful soul.

      Agreed!

    • @tahlia__nerds_out
      @tahlia__nerds_out 5 месяцев назад

      Me too. Every great creative got to where they were because they dared to suck. Failure can be just a step toward success, each failure bringing us closer to success as it shows what won’t work. Once we know what won’t work, we can put that aside as an option and work more vigorously in the direction of success. If we allow fear of failure to paralyze us, we automatically limit our own ability to succeed. A “dare to suck” attitude is a great one to have in any creative venture; an unchecked ego is the enemy of anyone who really wants to reach greatness.
      For every Mona Lisa there is a myriad of other ideas that failed in execution or never made it past the planning stage. But Da Vinci is remembered for Mona Lisa and other successful projects; the others are just a footnote in his story. I’m so glad that we have artists from all different mediums and genres who dared to suck; the world is a more beautiful place for it.

The 2 most well-known songs are the fun, party, song "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" and today's featured song "Time After Time". Cyndi's voice on the whole *She's So Unusual* album was as vital to me as so many other records mentioned here by Rob. "Time After Time" may have been my favorite ballad back in those days, and she was up against Neil Diamond (we had gitten five or six of his albums by the time this one came our way). I was pretty blown away by how Cyndi sounded, and even my four-year-old brain (how old I was when I first heard the album) noticed that her singing was nuanced enough to nail "Time After Time" and the uptempo tunes like "She Bop" and "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun".
    I also remember my mother saying she got a headache whenever I would start the album at the beginning with "Money Changes Everything" I was always so disappointed when she said that.

    She was perfect for the time, and in her performance of every note she sang. She definitely ranks at the top of female artists from the 80s. I'd put Pat Benetar, the Wilson sisters Anne and Nancy, and Orinda Sue Ross (Quarterflash) in that same category of absolute vocal dominance.

    I loved this album when it came out. "She Bop" was one of the songs a band at the Stockton Hilton used to play. I'd be there Friday nights to watch and dance. I eventually got up the courage to ask to play with them for the second synthesizer part during the musical interlude. I had a fun little Casio CZ-101 with a shoulder strap.
    I also really like "Time After Time." One time I was able to see Miles Davis in concert, and he chose this song for one of his improvisation vehicles. I will never forget that experience.

    What a timeless classic. Even in the GDR back in the days where it was impossible to buy such records, this song was very prominent. When I heard the song for the first time, I didn't undestand any english word. But I knew when the last whispered "Time" at the end of the song was said after the short break, that this would break my heart every time I hear this song.

    When my daughter was a toddler, we were in the car, she was in the back in her car seat. Time After Time came on the radio. Something about this song made her teary eyed. In her limited vocabulary she asked me to change the song because it was making her sad. As if in a past life this song impacted her and all these feelings came out. Now she's a tween and in dance class. End of year all dance students get to dance on stage. She did a solo with this song.

To this day that song always reminds me of her. She passed in 2013 of cancer. She was a sweet girl. As it turned out, those were the best years of both of our lives. In '1979 I was the lead singer of an all BEATLES cover band, called WISHES and we were booked at a huge rock club called OBI out in Hampton Bays Long Island. We got a good reception from the small crowd. At one point, the female lead singer of the group that just finished performing their set, comes up to me, while we were doing our set, and says," I wanna do a BEATLES song with you" Her group was Flyer and that singer was Cyndi Lauper. We sang "In My Life" together. Years later,Cyndi recounts the episode of performing at OBI CLUB that night...( just about the entire experience of being at a huge club on a slow night, not about singing with me) lol...I have a Polaroid of the clubs marquee with both band names on it. Also Cyndi used to live in Richmond Hill Queens, where I also used to live. Love your videos,Prof!❤😂🎶👍

    “She’s so Unusual” (great cover of Prince’s “When you were Mine” on a fantastic album) was so amazing - I was a kid when Cyndi broke BIG on mtv - her persona, her awesome “thrift store before thrift stores were cool” style, her free spirit - and her gorgeous songs - mtv constantly pitched Madonna and Cyndi against each other, which showed how narrow things were like only two women could be solo artists with quirky styles etc. I loved and love them both - and now we have so many talented young women singers and songwriters - thank you Cyndi!!

    Adam, you asked where she ranked for the 80s, it's gotta be #1 in both our hearts and in the musical facts. She was able to do not only super stellar vocals like in the lengthy long-note ending in All Through The Night, but she was able to get people dancing with She Bop, and she's someone who's classics are loved by all. I've been at bike rallies, and birthday parties, and people love Time After Time & Girls Just Want to Have Fun. What she did in reworking Girls is amazing, to turn it from how the original was.
    She's definitely #1 in the 80s for females having the most varied style. Madonna is the queen of pop, and Whitney came on strong, but they're pretty much known for one style. Cyndi could do it all, as her albums have shown over the years, with the #1 Dance record in 2008, and the big Blues album that won awards and was #1 for many weeks on that chart. I love her "At Last" song that was used in Bones, also! POWERFUL PIPES.
