NO TIME TO DIE 4K UHD BLU-RAY Review

  • Review of the 4K disc release for the 2021 James Bond spectacular No Time To Die - Daniel Craig's last outing in the title role. Shot in a combination of 15/70mm IMAX, Super Panavision 65mm and anamorphic 35mm this film has naturally transferred extremely well to 4K Blu-ray disc. Picture aspect ratio is the standard Panavision 'Scope frame (approx. 2.40:1) so expect there to be some evident cropping occasionally owing to how it was shot because genuine IMAX is 1.43:1 and 65mm is 2.20:1 but this film did not get a film print release and was just video projected everywhere upon general release owing to all the delays and costs incurred owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. Sound is Dolby Atmos.

Greetings Tony from Norway. I have to admit that I usually only get the enthusiasm to do a review if the 4K disc and the film are good. There have been a few that weren't so good but I've tended to include those in the round-up reviews I've done. i was hoping to get another of those done before we moved but there just wasn't the time. Maybe I'll get back to them all once the new home cinema is finished.

Finally someone who recognises Tim Dalton as Bond - he was closest to bond in the books and the living daylights is a great movie - if he had a early Connery script I think he would’ve been the definitive incarnation

    • @moviecollector5920

I think both the Dalton films are among the best Bond films Dean. Thunderball is my favourite Sean Connery but I've been going back and looking at a few of them and it's surprising how they've dated but Thunderball is still good. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is probably the best of the early Bond's though so it's a shame George Lazenby didn't do a second. Live and Let Die was great but I think The Spy Who Loved Me is the best of the Roger Moore films. I only really liked Tomorrow Never Dies from the Pierce Brosnan films.

@@trevorml1362 "This never happened to the other fella'!" was apparently what Lazenby was saying around the set and when they needed a way to end that opening sequence and couldn't think of anything I think it was the director who suggested it. I still find it funny. The fake accent was a little too tongue-in-cheek perhaps but overall, what a great Bond adventure it was. I don't think it would have worked as well with Sean Connery playing the lead but who knows? John.

@@moviecollector5920 I have come to gain a new appreciation for Dalton as Bond. I watched the documentary Everything or Nothing (Same title as a Bond game btw). In the documentary Dalton expressed how he wasn't content to just do the same old thing and wanted to bring the edge back to it. He remarked how parents said "I can't even take my children to see Bond anymore" As Dalton noted 007 was never meant for children. So I have come to appreciate Dalton more than I once did.

@@Linkman247 Timothy Dalton was outstanding in the role of James Bond. I'd grown a little weary of the Bond films and then The Living Daylights came along and it was like the whole concept had been reinvented for a modern audience. Sadly the USA in particular wasn't ready to move on as they still hankered after more from Roger Moore. Moore was right for his time but I felt he went on for one or two films too many. If he'd have bowed out with For Your Eyes Only then maybe Timothy Dalton would have had greater acceptance and done more Bond films. Then again, maybe Dalton wouldn't have been considered for the role a few years earlier.

It may have been a 2K video projector that's been in for 15 years so that's a bit of a problem for cinema today. On the other hand, even the smallest cinema screens tend to be far bigger than our home screens and the bigger you go the easier it is to see how good picture quality really is... or isn't! Bring back film to cinemas so we can all be assured of decent image quality. Given how film can be produced not direct from a high resolution computer master the end results all tend to look exceptional. There are even a couple of people applying this technology for new Super 8 releases so the scourge of neg dust which was always present on Super 8 could almost be a thing of the past.

But aha! I didn't realize it was shot on film as you explained here. Thanks for the insight John. I agree the HDR really made this one, the colouring was absolutely superb. I don't think the Craig series could have a better send off than this one

    • @moviecollector5920

If I remember correctly Jason, there were a mix of film formats used to make this one so if you want to look for increased film grain here and there you should see it if it is a 35mm shot. Much of it was genuine IMAX though so there's nothing better. It's such a shame that the editing process wasn't done on film though because that probably means we will never ever see a genuine IMAX print of it now. Last year was the 60th year of Bond on screen and as they didn't go back and complete this one on film last year and produce a few of the best exhibition format film prints known to man to celebrate the milestone with a special, limited film release to genuine IMAX cinemas, then I don't suppose they ever will now. But the large film formats used to make this one is why it is the best looking Bond that's ever been made.

As for this disc I wanted to point out the HDR10 grading is excellent but the Dolby Vision grading is a bit off in comparison. I do occasionally stick a disc through our television to double-check things but I haven't watched a full film on a television for so long now that I can't remember when I last did so I don't really have the opportunity to compare HDR to Dolby Vision. Most people who have it usually tell me it's better but given what you've said it seems that there are occasions when it's not quite so good. Whatever, the standard of home video now is unbelievable. I never would have believed this sort of standard could be achieved.

Looks great the room matey. Ahhhh the 70s i miss them, everyone spending time as a family the weekend's, going to the pictures as i used to call it or going to the local park or zoo, but the cinema still is up there for me and my mum when she used to take me nearly every weekend on a Saturday or a Sunday as we lived in Islington north London at Highbury Corner.
I remember the smoking on the upstairs on the route master buses and in the cinemas up the west end lol and the good old adverts advertising cigarettes' or cigars and Martina lol Jaws, Man with the golden gun, Close encounters, Star Wars, Capricorn one, Gold, At the earths core, I saw loads with my mum on their first release and cherish the 70s mate.

We're both on the same lines there David. I too saw all those same films at the cinema and fortunately due to Super 8 film collecting I was able to re-live it a little at home. A few years later and I was able to collect advert reels with some of those long gone adverts that are now frowned upon and splice them together with trailers of some of the 70s films. Wonderful. And I still have all those compilation reels including the pa-pa-pa-pa Pearl & Dean opening and closing for the ads.
I worked in Islington for a year when I was older. Only a 20 minute walk from Russell Square where I lived.
      John.

Hi John, great to see your new theater starting to take shape. We agree on Timothy Dalton, who was exceptional. A high class actor playing the role. Regarding No Time To Die, I enjoyed it but felt it was way overlong, suffering from bloat caused by self importance. The 4K disc is exceptional and IMHO one of the finest from 2021. Stay well my friend.

I need to re-look at a few of the best 4K discs from the past as it's difficult to interpret exactly how good this 4K of No Time To Die is. Compared to the Blu-ray of Spectre it's night and day though so that's a pretty good indication of how good it is. It certainly shows the value of shooting in 65mm and genuine IMAX.
I hope all is well over there in California.

Must agree with you John. This 'Bond' movie was by far the best (and longest!) of the five 'Craig' movies. I also noticed some actual sounds coming out of my Atmos speakers! They usually remain mostly silent, but at least I got a few effects coming out of them for a few seconds only! I went into HMV on Monday, only to be stunned by the incredible price rises! They seem to be using crafty ways of increasing prices! Like new cardboard covers over normal plastic Blu ray cases and calling 'mono' an 'Authentic Monaural Track'! Even old movies seem to have gone way up in price, without even being restored or anything! So my collection will probably suffer somewhat and not grow much. I was saying that same thing to John from 'Mondo' fame earlier. Great video, loving the new home cinema and can't wait for more of these videos!

I haven't been into an HMV for a while now Charles so I hadn't noticed the changes. I have just put an order in via their web store today and although the two pre-orders were pricey I did get a couple of bargains too so maybe they'll still be able to offer good value overall.
The new home cinema is making progress. I'll probably leave it for a while now and hope to get another video up to show progress soon.

Yes sir, on the IMAX bit! We're lucky to have at least three commercial IMAX screens here in the the San Francisco Bay Area (USA), in addition to our space dome / science theaters. A funny bit: I once made the mistake watching Batman Begins at a space theater IMAX dome - wrong film for the wrong screen. When I watched it 10 years later, it felt like a new film! No fish-eye distortion!!!

Tres interessant Rene! But I bet the two sequels to Batman Begins looked fabulous at the Space Theatre IMAX Dome. I think so too Austin. That's down to the filming format and most notably the fairly extensive use of 15/65 genuine IMAX film. The fact that it wasn't finished as an IMAX film for worldwide distribution to the 30 or so remaining IMAX cinemas is a travesty. But at least it gave us the superior imagery only 65mm/70mm film can provide.

I can't decide if it's The Living Daylights or Licence To Kill. Casino Royale is the only other Bond film that may rival the two greats starring Timothy Dalton but No TIme To Die was pretty darned good. Such a shame that after all the effort to make something special in IMAX that not a single IMAX print was struck. If I were involved and in charge, I'd send the editors back to cut it on film and finish it on film and issue a few IMAX prints for the 60th anniversary of Bond. Then they'd have something special to show off and a great opportunity for a press release to garner some attention for the 60 years. I'd certainly head to the BFI IMAX to see it.

Live and Let Die, The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only were the stand out Roger Moore films in my opinion. Timothy Dalton was simply a class act and Daniel Craig is based on Dalton's portrayal as far as I can see. I've enjoyed the Craig series but perhaps give Casino Royale another try sometime because that one is special. The card game when Bond loses is different and I like the fact that nothing much happens for about 20 minutes or so. Of the Pierce Brosnan films I think Tomorrow Never Dies is pretty terrific.

I absolutely agree with the comparison of Craig with Dalton. Dalton was absolutely ready to take a similar direction to how the franchise went when Craig was cast, but the producers seemed to be unwilling to fully let go of the Moore era. An era I personally find to be nearly Batman TV show levels of camp. It's fine for what it is, and can be wildly entertaining (I always enjoy THE SPY WHO LOVED ME). but...that's not Bond for me, personally.
Anyway....Connery is really the gold standard, I think we all have to bow to that. Outside of that, I think Craig has pushed Dalton out of the second slot for me, and it's entirely because of the films themselves, the commitment to the change in tone and direction, building a run that feels connected with a full character arc for Bond. Had Dalton had that...it'd be a different story. He certainly had the talent and take on the character to make the same thing work.
I also find it funny how many Dalton plot elements, revoking his 00 status, killing Leiter, etc. Got recycled for Craig, in some way or another.
As for NO TIME TO DIE...I absolutely adored it. To the point where I told my wife in the theatre, "I may never need to see another Bond film." We know they'll re-cast, and I suspect move more toward reviving the episodic style of the first 20 EON-produced films. That just kind of makes me feel...sad.
I have the 4K at home, but have not watched it. Since I always trust your reviews, I can't wait. I took the opportunity to upgrade all my Daniel Craig disks to 4K at the same time, and I'm going to work through them all. The Spy Who Loved Me will always be the top Roger Moore film though even if only for the Lotus Esprit with the red tartan interior - perfect!
As for this latest film - brilliant. It may not be Casino Royale but I can't see how they could have topped that without perhaps releasing Licence To Kill after it... and it was already too late for that!

I don't think everyone realizes that the James Bond series started again from the beginning (which it never did before) with Casino Royale. Just like so many superhero films and other greats like Star Trek, James Bond got a reboot so to kill him off in the end doesn't really matter because he can be rebooted again with a new cast. Like yourself David, I don't see the problem. No Time To Die has got to be one of the best Bond films to date so it's a shame so many got wrapped up in the "you killed my hero, I'm not watching any more" type of argument.
As for On Her Majesty's Secret Service, I think that may be the best of the early Bon'd's but it may be rivalled by Thunderball. After that I think only The Spy Who Loved Me surpassed it until Timothy Dalton took the title role and his two films are the best of all. It's good that all the more obscure Bond films are now getting the respect they deserve. I expect No Time To Die will go through the same process. I just wish they would print a genuine IMAX 70mm so we could all have the chance of seeing it in the best possible format. After all,, they filmed it with IMAX 15/70 for that purpose so it's a terrible waste not to invest in a couple of prints.

Hi John, Hard to believe this film was sat on a shelf for a year and a half before we finally got to see it. I would say Casino Royale, Skyfall, No time to die all amazing. Quantum of Solace and Spectre less so. So many references, music cues to old Bond films, sheer perfection. The ending? Either very brave or very stupid, only time will tell.

Awesome review as always! Well I'll have to agree with you: Timothy Dalton was the best Bond and the much darker and more serious tone/approach to his two Bond entries was a choice, not any kind of limited acting ability. Dalton played a deliciously campy, moustache twirling villain, who is also a bad actor, in "Rocketeer". And, as I probably mentioned eralier, I was lucky enough to watch true IMAX (70mm 15perf horizontal) in the early 2000s, both in 2D and in 3D on a 5000 square foot (500 square meters) screen. Absolutely stunning!

It seems that quite a few of us on here thought highly of Timothy Dalton as James Bond. I though I might attract a lot of criticism by daring to say it but quite the opposite so far. I think Dalton is good in everything he appears in but Bond is his most memorable role, which it would be given the scale of the Bond films.

Star Trek VI played in 70mm and the sound was so amazing that I had to have the same at home. Of course, nothing comes close to what they had in Empire 1 back then but for a home system, this Pioneer/Kef THX Ultra is a bit of a dream come true... even after coming up to 20 years of playing with it.

‘No Time To Die’ Brilliant Bond picture with the perfect ending….. music an all, second only to OHMSS for me. Lazenby was my first Bond and OHMSS my first Bond picture at the cinema (and what a picture wow) so he will always be my favourite Bond, however totally agree about Dalton definitely the best actor to play Bond, such a shame the studio wanted him changed once the MGM/UA legal tangle was sorted, the Broccoli’s wanted to keep him.

@@moviecollector5920 I guess where I’m coming from, regarding price, is the electronic EQ that’s available in the pricey receivers. The need for this technology is similar in nature to our want or need for visual clarity and colour accuracy. If the sound is EQ’d well and we’re not losing details because of room distortions than we’re hearing everything that was intended to be heard in the movie. For example, after acoustically treating my theatre room I was able to hear the T-Rex biting the Jeep’s roof in Jurassic Park directly above me instead of only at the projector screen. So for people that don’t want to spend money buying acoustic treatments or spend time making them, a new receiver may be able to fix some of the clarity issues. Which I’m in favour of. The music callbacks to some of the previous movie themes reminded me of how much I missed the incomparable John Barry. If you can do adjustable masking Spyglass, that's the best solution. That way you would have a 'real' Ultra Panavision screen and every other format too barring Cinerama I suppose. I don't have a motorized bottom mask on mine yet but because it's a roll down screen I am able to manually adjust the bottom to suit the projected image... for the time being. None of it really needs to be automated as it all works just as well manually, it's just nice to be able to press buttons from your chair. If you put in adjustable masking at the sides only you could simply adjust those for wider formats. Top and bottom masks as well mean you can be infinitely adjustable through all ratios and therefore completely fill your screen with something like Tenet or Dunkirk. Cover the masks in black velvet and just about all extraneous light gets absorbed so job done!

There weren't even any 2.20:1 70mm prints so all this is really the missed opportunity but to be fair to the makers and distributors they couldn't have known if this film would succeed given the situation with Covid-19. As it turned out the estimated budget of $250m was dwarfed by the box office of $750m so it was already into profit by the time it went to disc and streaming. If they'd have known that six months ago I think we'd have had genuine IMAX screenings and I'd have been there for one of them. I agree with you though, I'd have liked to have seen the IMAX sequences on the disc just like they were done for the Christopher Nolan films. I'm not sure I want them to suddenly appear at 1.43:1 like on the re-master of Batman Vs. Superman as that would jar a bit and leave the IMAX scenes looking less impressive than the 'Scope scenes.

If not, what is the experience like with the 70mm vs the digital? EDIT: Right, different aspect ratios, where the 70mm is 1.43:1 vs 1.9:1, so a much taller screen.

@@GadgetyMV I was so appalled by the quality of projection in the West End up to the mid-2000's that I rather gave up on cinema. The BFI IMAX because a refuge providing they had IMAX film prints and weren't passing off a video projection as IMAX but have seen a few video projections since those bad days and although video has improved markedly it lacks something on a massive screen. To get the best image quality the top film makers want to shoot on large format film. Kenneth Branagh and Christopher Nolan have proven the point in recent years and the best 4K discs all originated on 65mm or IMAX. There are a couple of exceptional videos that are among the best of 4K but they're a rare thing. Le Mans '66 was reported as a 4K video shoot but I ran it again recently to test out the new home cinema when I was planning it all and I could see film grain so I suspect someone got their wires crossed somewhere. I had that down as the best example of video on 4K disc rather than film transferred to 4K disc. Oh well.

@@bryanbond1658 I may attach some pegs with rubber attached to the grips (to avoid damaging the screen) to the lower right and left of the screen and then connect that to a couple of elasticated thingamajigs screwed to the wall as it doesn't take much to eliminate the waves in the screen altogether. But that depends on how often I wind the screen up and down as I really don't want to damage it after all these years. Once we get the cinema room sorted I plan to go back to the best solution of a painted wall for the screen and move the roll down screen into the living room for occasional duty in there. 110 inches must be about eight and a half feet wide. Hello Doorvanee. I haven't seen District 9 and that's probably because it's heavy on computer animation which generally turns me off, but there are exceptions. I shall try to remember to look out for it the next time I'm browsing in an HMV and see what I think. I don't think I could do a dedicated review video for it but it could fit in a round-up review once I get back into things fully. The new home cinema is pretty much done now so I'm almost ready to get on with RUclips videos again.

I tend to prefer it when it is used to clean up a practical effect or generally finish something off but I'm of an age when Star Wars was a sensation and so many of us appreciated the artistry and expertise that went into creating the seamless special effects within it. Having said that, the re-worked Death Star battle in the 1997 re-working of the film was pretty darned wonderful even if much of the rest of the film where it had been tinkered with was a bit of a mess. There weren't any IMAX prints struck Robert so sadly none of us were able to see this in IMAX. I expect they video projected it in a few cinemas claiming to be IMAX but I'd rather they called it something else to differentiate the two. I used to sometimes go into the BFI IMAX to ask if a film being screened is really a film print and they didn't know what I was talking about. That was over 15 years ago so it must be absolutely hopeless out there in the cinema world now. I didn't bother going to see this new Bond at the cinema simply because I knew no 70mm prints had been struck. What a terrible shame. Still, the 4K and the Blu-ray both look fabulous at home so it's a good second best.

I really liked the film and the best portrayal as an emotionally charged bond. Whilst the villain wasn’t as strong as I’d hoped, I think this was purposeful as this wasn’t the focus of the story. The action was great, pacing was good and the end was well handled. Casino Royale was the best Craig and best bond movie ever but I loved T Dalton movies (in the minority).
Overall - Craig had a great run as bond and the style of movies and filmmaking were high level. Who would you like to see as the next Bond? And what style?

I seem to detect that Timothy Dalton is gaining in stature for his portrayal of James Bond in more recent years. A few of us are feeling brave enough to say that we liked his version of Bond the best and for years no one would dare mention him. I liked him right from the start of The Living Daylights as it immediately felt more realistic to me. A British secret agent being sent to Eastern Europe to assassinate someone... seems far more plausible to me. As for who I'd like to see as the next Bond, I've rather learned to leave it up to the film makers as they've always made good choices. I really like Idris Elba and I think his persona would be perfectly suited but I don't suppose I'm being realistic.

@@moviecollector5920 Not that I’m a major Bond fan (generation thing maybe…). Timothy Dalton always felt realistic (for the most part…) and it was dark, especially Licence to Kill. As for a new Bond - I want to see a brute, a no nonsense Bond and a 15 certificate to cement him as a brute. I want proper procedural espionage and set in Europe with a realistic take - almost as if it had happened - shot like Munich (Spielberg) and Similar to Ronin (De Niro). But - it will be a long time yet. Idris does have what it takes but I think age is on the wrong side for a long term bond. I like Henry Cavil but not sure he has the acting chops - Henry Cavil’s build with Idris Elba’s tone and you’d have a winner. What’s next on your review list?
