The reason he was dense is cause lwj is a boy, and he did not know he himself was attracted to him. He mistake it as a friendship thing, when in reality wwx is being equally obsessive since the start. Its clear in the extra chapters, and the last extra chapter, he admitted it to LWJ.

In the novel I believe they get married after Wei Ying reincarnates and solves the mystery. Not sure about the manhua or the animation. In the live action it ends before they get married.

Wei Ying is such a sad clown. He always jokes around and makes himself look like a fool to make the people around him happy and to not show others how hurt he is inside. No matter how crazy his shenanigins gets, he will always love and be loved by his beloved Lan zhan, who will pamper this clown until he's nice and comfy. Also, side note, I bet part of the reason he acts like a clown is so that others pay attention to him since he seems starved for love considering his background (aside from Jiang Yanli who was the only person he felt comfortable with to act calm and be babied by until he met Lan Zhan) and so people don't realize how smart he is or to downplay how smart he is because he was seen as less than his brother who was always pushed to succeed him. I think he may have been a clown and purposely slack off so his brother would look better in comparison and because he felt it didn’t matter how hard he worked since he would only be seen as a servant’s son. Or i'm overanalyzing and Wei Wuxian really just loves to goof around and receive attention.

All of that is indeed true but it also says in the novel that wwx LOVES to cause trouble and being chaotic is basically his hobby lol.
I mean, he DOES love the attention, but what you said is not wrong. You yourself mentioned it; he's tragically starved for love, so being in the spotlight is the next best thing and is a nice side-effect of lowering his reputation so Jiang Cheng can shine brighter. I do love how he turns into a 3 year old around Jiang Yanli, who is probably the only one who pampered him since his parents died (Jiang Fengmian doesn't really count, since he has his own duties and could not show too much affection towards him even if the situation with his wife was different), though his shameless cries for love and affection from his sister only hardens the theory. He loves Jiang Cheng too, but is very obvious that he would give absolutely everything for Yanli, gladly, and is a lot more attached to her, bordering on an almost-crazed overprotection towards her that not even Jiang Cheng, who definetly has a sister complex as well, showed. We see this again with the way he acts around the Wen remnants, especially Wen Qing (Wen Yuan is too small for that, and Wen Ning is too innocent to be a big-sibling/parent figure). He basically tried to replace what he'd lost with Yanli with her, something that was definetly unconscious and instinctive, and he would've probably stopped if he actually realised what he was doing.
Wow, okay, I was just going to write a short comment, but somehow ended up with half an essay. Sorry for that. Anyway, I'll just end mentioning that I'm glad he fould the love and attention he so desperately craved in the end. Bless you, Lan Wangji.
