  • The UK government is planning major reforms to workers' rights through the Employment Rights Bill.
Key changes include giving employees the right to claim unfair dismissal from day one, mandatory contract offers for zero-hours workers, default flexible working, and sick pay from the first day of illness.
There will also be new rules on unpaid parental and bereavement leave, and restrictions on "fire and rehire" practices. However, some elements, like the "right to switch off," are not included in the bill.
Ian Collins discusses the bill with political commentator, Sophia Worringer.

If there was that much of a security risk why were so many MP's and ministers in attendance.

More pertinent is bad employees will abuse decent bosses. These new rules are crazy. Empowering the kidz.

They avoid employment rights already by employing cash-in-hand the recent arrivals. Businesses running legitimately are already at a huge disadvantage.

Sounds like a call for more regulation and more government

Just remember Angela Rayner has no experience of creating or running a business this is just a way of pleasing the trade unions who pay Labour for these rules.

Zero hour contracts are awful. Having a shift cancelled with hours or even mins to spare with no compensation is completely legal to the employer due to the contract.
Some businesses take on agency staff long term instead of full-time staff for years! I know someone who is well paid on this contract but could not tell me how much he's going to work at all in a given month but it has been more than a part-time job every week for last decade 🤯
The government is never gonna outright ban them, they will become the exception than the rule.
I would strongly suspect in the service industry or seasonal work it will be a matter of agreement between the employee & employer if they stay on these contracts

The body is in constant stress mode on that type of contract so it's expected that people will fall ill often and for long periods and maybe even develop long term diseases because of it. Years ago employers had some respect for their employees and would state hours and days and would ensure you recieved what they said but now thats gone with zero hour contracts, especially cos there's always some other poor soul who is desperate for work and will take what ever an employer offers. It's modern day slave labour. I have known people to be sent by agencies for 6am to factories only to be sent home and given no wage for it. No wonder people turn work down if offered being treated like that. It's soul destroying.

The are plenty of bad employers, BUT there is also no shortage of really bad employees who are incompetent and skive at every possible opportunity. If employers can't weed these out early, with a probationary period, then their business might go under, putting all the decent employees out of a job.
If I was employing under these new rules I would only take on those with a very solid CV, which I would carefully check out first.

“Bad Employers Will Always Find Ways To Exploit Workers”
Is this intended as an argument against the bill? If so, it's a very poor one.

Maybe employers should do their due diligence. When hiring employees and take responsibility when they make a mistake?

One of the aims of employment law is to encourage employers to develop better HR practices.

Students, immigrants and employers are the only people who would be happy with zero hour contracts.

The world of work is already pro employee. Certain companies will always have an unreasonable expectation upon workers. Sometimes it is better to leave or be fired from those companies.

Introducing more rules is not the answer, using some common sense in tribunals is the answer. An employer should be able to trim their workforce to suit the work available at the time. It has always been the case that if you don't like your job, leave and find another one.

How will this affect NHS “bank” workers, I have a number of friends who are raising a family and come off a permanent contract and go “on the bank” in order to have more flexible hours. A large number of staff shortages in the NHS are filled by zero hour contracts.

    • @msto1987

It's a simple fix with wording. Any job offering Will either give the employee the option Of a zero hour contract, but that choice would be completely down to the employee... problem solved

Pretty sure the Brexit benefit was to increase wages across all sectors to have better living conditions.... As soon as people mention improving employees rights and wages, the right turns around and says it will kill business - true colours of Brexit being shown, it only benefits 1 group of people and it isn´t the ordinary working person. Once ECHR is gone, they can start on the next chapter to erode workers rights.

You absolute plum wages have hardly gone up since the early 90’s. A consequence of open door immigration & 75% of all vacancies since 2004 going to immigrants. These stupid socialists won’t improve anyone’s wages apart from the public sector whilst they’re still important millions. Unfortunately you’re too stupid to understand why wages have stagnated since Maastricht in 1992.

You have clearly never employed anyone. Bad employees crucify small companies. The left only knows how to kill business, I saw it for myself in the seventies, it wasn't a pretty sight watching the unions close industry after industry with unsustainable demands. Their never ending industrial action was a disaster for the UK and you want to bring those days back.

You failed to realize that the government provides them. With stability, with roads with schooling and all kinds of other social benefits that taxes paid for you aren't
Opening any business without the infrastructure of the government has put in place. The government may not create business, but it does create the culture that allows you to create Your business. Without the government, you wouldn't have a business, so you need to remember that

There is nothing for migrant workers in this bill although migrant workers are the victim of modern slavery and exploitation. Several migrant care workers were raped by employers. Uk should consider them as human being also.
