I used to work at a videogame store, a few years ago. One day a dad and his kid son came in looking for a FPS for their PS4, telling me they love them, and I sold them some game I don't even remember. We talked about videogames as he was paying, and the dad mentioned having a gaming PC that they liked to play on, but didn't use much because it wasn't quite as powerful as their PS4. I asked them if they'd ever heard of F.E.A.R., and they hadn't. So I was like, "no no no don't go yet, give me a few minutes of your time, if you like shooters ya gotta watch this, hold up", and played them this very video on the store PC, after clearing it with the dad if it was okay to show the kid violent game footage ("oh, I let him play everything, don't worry about it"). They watched it, both dad and kid going "whoa" as the Point Man slid around and killed replicas in a million cool ways. After the video was done, I gave them my own opinion about how F.E.A.R. is one of the greatest shooters ever made, and a total must-play, and he was like "I'll look for it as soon as we get home". About a month later both of them show up again, don't buy anything, but walk right up to me going "hey, remember us?" and thanked me for the recommendation! We spent a few minutes just talking about how great the game is, then they said bye and left. One of my proudest moments as a videogame salesman was selling those two a (then) 15-year-old game we didn't even actually sell, and I couldn't have done it without your help, Rabbit's Respawn.

IMO fear was not ahead of its time, he came exactly at its time, all the ingredients to create it were already released before, Doom3 introduced the excellent, real time per pixel lighting, normal mapping tech and shadows, that fear 1 also uses, HL2 introduced a fantastic way to present a games story/pacing and coupled with the developers love for the Max Payne games, John Woo action movies and Japan horror movies, Fear developers add all the ingredients to create a master peace, again imo it came at the perfect time. Btw many may disagree but IMO the game that really came ahead of its time, was Crysis 1, that btw uses the exact same AI tech as Fear 1, but people somehow think Crysis AI is less intelligent, go figure. IMO Crysis 1 came so much ahead of its time that at ultra, it run slow on top of the line computers from 2007, because of that it spawn a decade of "can it play Crysis?" meme's and accusations that Crytek didn't "optimized" the game, but imo, ho man did they optimized it, the hell of it! Why? Because to me, is the only way that explains how such graphics, could even run at the time. Still today, when I install Crysis 1, my jaw drops the graphics hold so well, how a more than a decade old game, can still look so good in 2022 is impressive to me. There are games that really show their time/age but IMO, Crysis looks nothing like a 2007 game.
@@Argoon1981 "Doom3 introduced the excellent, real time per pixel lighting" - no / I'm not even sure what you mean. If you mean the shadows they are actually better than per pixel, they are volumetric, made of invisible geometry. This is why they show no aliasing. MSAA can clean them up, unlike the modern per pixel approach with shadowmasks. Doom 3 often gets the credit for these types of shadows but other games (Deus Ex 2, Thief 3 and Riddick) all launched with stencil shadows before Doom 3. In the case of Riddick the shadows are actually superior to Doom 3's. "Crysis 1, that btw uses the exact same AI tech as Fear 1" - For the life of me I cannot find ANY sources on how Crysis' AI works. But from playing both games a lot I would guess Crysis uses something simpler like behavior trees. Behavior trees were popularized by Halo 2 and scale-wise seem a perfect fit for Crysis. Could do with a reboot for this series. I loved the first one, one of my favourite FPSes ever. It feels like single player FPSes are dying a slow death - the only examples are the campaigns in COD and Battlefield and apparently no-one cares about them that much anyway and it's all about Warzone and multiplayer. Well I care and I reckon plenty of other people do too. Aside from Doom, the last great FPS I played was Titanfall 2...four years ago. This genre used to pump out great singleplayer games on the regular, it's a shame we don't see as many of them these days. I still think first person is the most effective way of immersing the player in a game world.

Imagine an anime-style mecha themed scifi-game with John Woo's action and Ju-On/Ring horror. This game series is also a prequel to an anime-inspired mecha FPS called SHOGO: Mobile Armor Division.
Honestly, they knocked it out of the park so hard that the follow on games for me were something I played once, never touched them again and went back to the first series that used the original game engine. The feel and flow of the first fear is just unmatched.
I remember being scare ass fuck when playing this game, felt lucky when the soldiers were around, they gave me the feeling of being safe from whatever that was lurking in the shadows.
when F.E.A.R came out I was so happy to assume that from then on all games will have that level of A.I at least if not better. But boy I was wrong. To this day, copy paste games are made with good graphics but same old if not worse game play.
That's an excellent game that I own, so I know that you're correct. It does happen to be a squad based tactical shooter though, so it's not quite the same genre.
Good AI means good level design and map directions for the AI to go to, fear was a masterpiece like half life 2 because both games stick to linear simplicity, however most games are focus on this open world nonsense where side missions are the same shit over and over with no level structure as sheep cries for more open ended games forgetting FEAR exists for its genius linear level structure and AI... damn shame, fuck the open world if they are risking quality and AI over pretty flat scenery
I'm playing the Mass Effect trilogy now and I'm completely stunned how bad that AI is, it's almost worst than Assassin's Creed More games should be like Batman Arkham. That AI is unbelievable fun.
Fear's ai is mediocre. Unintelligent people just think it's amazing because the soldiers call out their moves. I'm mean, seriously, enemies are just standing around in the open in most of these clips.
Vorcheski before stay at home moms that haven’t played a real game in their life decide to have a rant on Facebook about violent video games causing serial murder rapists.
Cagkiller0 rage 2 is a very new game. It features incineration, mutilation, decapitation, dismemberment, all with detailed gibs and limbcaps, as well as solid spilling mechanics. wolfenstein 2 was a 2018 game. same stuff. if anything, games are more violent nowadays.
Please keep making these. Your videos are so much fun to watch. Also you should really consider bringing back the commentary. I miss your cheesy one liners.

As much as I would love a graphical enhancement to the original, I dont trust monolith to not violate a remaster with Microtransactions and anti-consumer design decisions. Remember these are the guys who brought us shadow of war
always had it in the back of my mind that your style would go well with FEAR. great game and you nailed it. even considered having a go at making some videos of it myself, at one point. nice to see you back and well.
I've played it before and its quite dank, there is not really any gameplay quite like it. Definitely one of the best singleplayer gameplay experiences when it came out, was a milestone with the slow mo, dismemberment and weapon selection...oh wait...that sounds like...dishonored XD
Modern day AAA developers would 100% fuck it up. Nobody knows how to make deep fps mechanics anymore, when was the last time you played a new AAA fps with leaning? Siege is like the only one. AI is also wayyyy worse now than it was then, as consumers don't give a shit anymore so neither do developers. In a lot of ways, gaming becoming super mainstream kinda ruined AAA gaming. Mechanics/innovative design doesn't matter to AAA anymore as consumers are perfectly fine buying the same shit re-skinned over and over again (kinda like how movie goers love superhero films, even though they are functionally almost identical in plot and outcome). The majority just want a predictable story that functions like a second rate film (because a good "game" story is usually about as good as a decent-meh film story), good graphics, and lots of content (even if the content is essentially rehashed bullshit). Mechanics don't seem to matter anymore. This leaves it up to indie and AA developers who dont have the budget necessary to pull of something like a modern day equivalent of FEAR. Sad times for the OGs who know how good things were.
So I had a question for you Rabbit. What game has the best slow mo mechanic? It seems like you enjoy playing games like Max Payne, Superhot, and F.E.A.R.
I think max payne might be my favourite. You have to earn it rather than wait for it to recharge and the dive mechanic gives it that extra cinematic flare.
Max payne was best slow mo 3rd person action game, Superhot was best slow mo low poly action game, Fear was best slow mo 1st person horror action game.

After all these years F.E.A.R. still remains my favorite FPS.
Wow, seeing that shotgun brought back so many memories of the game. The first FEAR was truly a masterpiece.
Honestly, they knocked it out of the park so hard that the follow on games for me were something I played once, never touched them again and went back to the first series that used the original game engine. The feel and flow of the first fear is just unmatched.
2005 was a hellva time
I'm obsessed with how well-edited this video is.
This is how it feels to chew 5 gum, the game.
Too sweat and slobbery?
@Dustin Sudbrink Argh!
I remember being scare ass fuck when playing this game, felt lucky when the soldiers were around, they gave me the feeling of being safe from whatever that was lurking in the shadows.
Uss HUNK worse when was a kid, couldn't even play the levels with those damn things 😂
Pfft, I wake up like this _every_ morning.
Lord Krythic in Russia obviously
When life hit hard, i always comeback to this video to give me hope.
Shoutout to Gggmanlives. His F.E.A.R. review convinced me to check out it's dlc.

Oz Chambers no
Please don't mention popular channels. You should of got Fear yourself, and the console versions have a bonus mission.
FEAR to this day still has the best AI.
Agreed
Jesus Christ man, I just found your channel and it's already filling me with the urge to play all these games!
This is quite possibly the best F.E.A.R montage I've ever seen!
"Jesus Christ, that's Jason Bourne."
Look who's finally came out from the Rabbit hole :D (Been waiting to say)
This is an incredibly well-made video about a fun and scary game that I have fond memories of playing back in the day. Thank you.
This is definitely one of my favorite videos on RUclips
Urban Chaos Riot Response anyone?
Lexar tm fuck YES!
hell yea my favourite
200% this! The only game made by Rocksteady before *immediately* going on to the Arkham series. Wish they'd ported it to PC, though.
yup
childhood game right there
when F.E.A.R came out I was so happy to assume that from then on all games will have that level of A.I at least if not better. But boy I was wrong. To this day, copy paste games are made with good graphics but same old if not worse game play.
i'm going to assume you never played Brothers in Arms - Earned In Blood. The Germans would suppress you and you troops and then flank you.
I'm playing the Mass Effect trilogy now and I'm completely stunned how bad that AI is, it's almost worst than Assassin's Creed
More games should be like Batman Arkham. That AI is unbelievable fun.
Fear's ai is mediocre. Unintelligent people just think it's amazing because the soldiers call out their moves. I'm mean, seriously, enemies are just standing around in the open in most of these clips.
2023 and this is still sick
This has been by far the most epic video about a game I've ever seen
Back when video games were inherently fun
Vorcheski before stay at home moms that haven’t played a real game in their life decide to have a rant on Facebook about violent video games causing serial murder rapists.
@@cagkiller0786 sure buddy, there's no violent video-games anywhere (lol) today. And it's because of your mum...
Dickheart That’s not my point you fucking dolt. Do you even open your eyes to see how much has been toned down in the gaming industry?
Cagkiller0 rage 2 is a very new game. It features incineration, mutilation, decapitation, dismemberment, all with detailed gibs and limbcaps, as well as solid spilling mechanics. wolfenstein 2 was a 2018 game. same stuff. if anything, games are more violent nowadays.
Games are still inherently fun. You just changed
is that the URBAN CHAOS theme?
duuuude the nostalgia
I played F.E.A.R back in the day. Good times, really good times.
Awesome montage, great editing with some humor sprinkled in. Dope shit.
Please keep making these. Your videos are so much fun to watch. Also you should really consider bringing back the commentary. I miss your cheesy one liners.
You finally respawned . I was a little bit worried but i should have known better . Anyway glad that you are back , and it seems that you haven't lost your swag at all . I mean it was just one of the classic videos i expect from you , was smiling through the whole thing again . Great job mate and again , good that you are back .
Thanks man. Happy you enjoyed it. I've loved your DOOM vids, really makes me wanna hop into the game myself.
Rabbit's Respawn
Happy to hear that you enjoyed the doom videos . Doom is surely worth a shot mate . I suggest you to start on nightmare right away tho . Anything lower then nightmare is a piece of cake .
I know I’m two years late, but this is the most kickass video I have ever, and most likely will ever see.
Holy shit dude this is playing it as you should, nice music sync btw! Really enjoyed :)
Can we get a fear remaster?
Why?
@@trilisser What a stupid question!
So that modern shit AAA developers could fuck it up beyond recognition as always? No thanks, original works for me just fine, remasters are a cancer.
We need *F.E.4.R.* but closer to the first. Please make a *reboot.*
As much as I would love a graphical enhancement to the original, I dont trust monolith to not violate a remaster with Microtransactions and anti-consumer design decisions. Remember these are the guys who brought us shadow of war
Do you play with a metronome going ?
Diskhate Velocity my friend
My absolute all time favorite FPS. And you handled it like a boss. Great video.
That rithym and timing man! A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I love it!
always had it in the back of my mind that your style would go well with FEAR. great game and you nailed it. even considered having a go at making some videos of it myself, at one point. nice to see you back and well.
I've played it before and its quite dank, there is not really any gameplay quite like it. Definitely one of the best singleplayer gameplay experiences when it came out, was a milestone with the slow mo, dismemberment and weapon selection...oh wait...that sounds like...dishonored XD
Yeah it's one of those games I just instantly felt comfortable with.
Can't wait to see what you got coming next man.
This was my first taste of a bullet time shooter. None have done it better since.
Check out wolfenstein (2009), fuckin' sick game, that uses bullet time elements...
Max Payne was pretty good from what I can remember
Wait, This song.. it's from a game in ps2
Oh wow, The good memories, i need to play it again.
Damn, this game really deserves a remake which I will pay for, Who else want it?
I Definetly would, played All 3 and still have all 3 and would buy another installment in a heart beat along with a remastered dead space trilogy
Why, the original still exists
No Remake!!!
Sad times for the OGs who know how good things were.
this ^
Dude, 0:32 - 0:42 I love this part and I don't know why. The music is just fucking perfect!
Thats why fear is still my favorite shooter
EnotXXX Ergo Proxy nice
HOLY SHIT!!! I never seen someone play this game this good! You trully are amazing! Loved the video!
Dude you're killing it! Awesome gameplay
Mate, this music threw me back to Urban Chaos: Riot Response.
You know it? One of the best games of its time, without a doubt.
Nice synchronization man. Really good video.
Thanks man :)
Havent seen that nice-fitting synch for a long time. Mostly I'm watching CSGO montages, but 99% of them are lazy synched.
Great vid as always!
anytime someone mentions how good FEAR is I remember your upload. Its too good.
This song is in the video game called Urban Chaos: Riot Response but it's very fitting for this video game.
Personally, I beat both Max Payne 1 and 2 using only the shootdodge aside from the Mona sniping part in 2.
Max is classic. They perfected it in Max 3 when combined animation, ragdoll physic and slow-mo.
Max payne was best slow mo 3rd person action game, Superhot was best slow mo low poly action game, Fear was best slow mo 1st person horror action game.
The Rythm combined with the music, gameplay and editing is S Tier.
Good shit.
Every once in a while when I require energy to jump back and play F.E.A.R. again, I come back to this video and dive right back in.
The original FEAR was so good!
I remember i felt so badass when i played it in 2006. Nostalgia of a nice game.
What a lovely montage!
Simply awesome!
He is back rejoice
:D
Holy shit, this song was on Urban Chaos: Riot Response. Funnest police brutality simulator ever.
"Did you remember to read 'em their rights?"
its simply amazing how well this game holds up more then a decade later
God damn, this song, urban chaos was such a fantastic game! Good thing some people still remember it! Good video man!
thought i was watching Urban Riots gameplay for a sec
This was and still is a masterpiece that took both horror and FPS genre into next level.
i LOVE that song!! its the title menu song from the very underrated PS2 Game Urban Chaos: Riot Response...man haven't heard that in years. thanks mate!
Very well synced music. I love it.
