The voice of the young Boy Georg, singer of Culture Club, was so great. They did so good concerts. Suggestions: Do You Really Want To Hurt Me, Victims, Time, Church Of The Poison Mind
I’m happy you’re doing more 80s British invasion, you’ve already done Duran Duran Save a Prayer, but they really were the undisputed kings of this movement. There are so many great Duran Duran tracks from the 80s and 90s that you can check out. Please do. Rio is where one starts.
My sister was an artist on the set of this video I was around 8 years old it was such pure joy and fun George was very kind and allowed us kid's to be kid's play run and be in the moment
Omg bro this song was a meme way long before computers were a thing.. and hes was trolling decades before. Now im past 50 years old and can watch it and brings back memories.
Thanks, Shawn... this is so much fun.. Boy George is amazing... and a great and hilarious video, too.. Yep.. you know more by them... appreciate your reaction!
Mersey beat is a collection of bands or artists who come from that area of England where the River Mersey is located. It's a sound attributed to bands from the area. It's located in or near Liverpool and the Beatles were the biggest Mersey beat band! It's a lot like the 'Madchester' sound - bands or artists from Manchester area during a certain time period. It's mostly what's considered 'Britpop'. The pub rock scene came from Londen so there is the pub rock sound. Over here we have the Philly Soul sound, and bands that came from the CBGB club and so on. From Wiki: 'Between 1958 and 1964, the Merseyside area had about 500 different groups, which were constantly forming and breaking up, with an average of about 350 groups....' I believe there was one band that renamed themselves 'The Merseybeats' but they weren't well known.
Boy George took the world by storm for a brief time back in the 80s. No one knew quite what to make of him, but he was so different if not courageous in his look and appearance that he was, for the most part, fully embraced. Was a bit of a sensation for a while there. Gotta do "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" next. Another huge hit for them. 👍
"Do you really want to hurt me?" has a bass line that, as a bassist, I see as elegantly-built, is a true groove, and...well...when I play it, I'm usually happy to try it, and happy I played it afterward, so that's a positive, right? lol!
Just fun fact back in 83 my buddy taped me to the doors riders on the storm, wayyy long before anybody knew there was a video. But yeah culture club we made so much fun of em. Boy georges prolly the straightest guy from way back.
One interesting feature of this video is the setting of 1870 Mississippi, while in the video of their earlier breakthrough song "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" has flashbacks set in Gargoyle Club, Soho in 1936 and the Dolphin Square Health Club, Pimlico in 1957. In "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" Boy George got shock and disgust in those two flashbacks and being prosecuted in a courtroom with blackface juries, while in "Karma Chameleon" he blended with a mixed racial crowd. Does the change of depictions in these two videos show that the directors, and perhaps Boy George himself felt that he was accepted to some degree by the larger world that he can fantasies a liberal heaven even in a more intolerant historical time?
The 3 guys playing cards with the bad guy are the other 3 members of the band.you saw jon moss the drummer wearing a blue shirt sitting on the side of the mixing decks in the studio in the band aid vid. I love the wedding singer i have it on dvd.alexis arrquette was dressed like boy George when he performed do you really want to hurt me in the film. Merry Christmas 🎄
I remember ebony and ivory and this aint gonna end well. The rest is Michael bought the Beetles catalog and told em go fuck yoselfs. And yes where was i when john lennon got killed? Where any 80s kid would be that time of night in the cereal isle of the grocery store with my mom. And the PA announces John Lennon was dead.
I suppose if one never listened to albums they have no way of knowing that Boy George had way better songs. All of his songs were good but this was so commercial.
I never cared for this. It was a good song, a number one just not my fave. They did much better. Miss me blind was a fine song, Victims, I always liked Take control, I'm afraid of me. And of course the big singles, Time, Do you really want to hurt me, Church of the poison mind. They were better than a lot of people give them credit for. And I have to admit, George was one of the most beautiful men in full makeup I've ever seen, on the cover of the first album
A commenter further down reminded me of the story that this was about frustration over a (real life) lover who couldn't decide if he was gay or not - he came and went on the subject; in and out of the closet, as it were. Of course it was a great deal harder to come out in the 70s and 80s; homosexuality was only legalised in Britain in the 60s, IIRC, and remained quite taboo socially. Boy George certainly helped change that with his androgenous style and light-handed approach to difficult subjects.
Culture Club had many, many hits. “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me” was probably their biggest hit.
Church of a poison mind, I'll tumble for ya, Time, all good songs by them

I miss the 80's. The music was so much fun!
It sure was!!
I have never known what this song was about and I have listened to it since the 80’s! Great reaction Shawn! Happy New Year to all!
Just one more tortured love song written about/to Jon Moss. He was a 'closeted' chameleon that changed to suit the mood.

Culture Club and Boy George enjoyed a long run with a string of hits. But I think his first hit Do You Really Want To Hurt Me was groundbreaking
