Never ceases to amaze me how poorly the affluent manage their finances. The more money people make the less responsible they are with it.
Based on what she said, they're not bad at managing money though. She said that once their house is paid off they'll be completely debt free. She's just anxious for no reason.
@@kristaw2686 nah there's no way there isn't something else to the story. No one is anxious making $500K unless their expenditure is unsustainably high

This is actually a perfect example of how Demoncrats act all the time. They act like they are suffering so much and expect others to sacrifice on behalf of them. It's really pitiful.

@@nryanmusic I would say it’s probably fear.

That's not moderately wealthy. That's rich. She's in the top 1%
Health is wealth and sickness is poor
I would not be sick for all the money in the world. You’re nuts

This lady needs to get out of her bubble and travel somewhere other than Europe, read "The Millionaire Next Door," and volunteer at a food kitchen or homeless shelter. Bless her heart.
That book was my first thought. These affluent people are seriously clueless and put themselves in stupid positions to live a certain way
Indeed bless her heart

As a doctor, she probably does more to really help people than anyone here commenting about her issue.
@@rosspimental8384 My patients may beg to differ. It's certainly possible, but not a certainty. I'm a licensed medical professional myself, and I do pretty well for myself. I invest about 75% of my income, and still live very comfortably (yearly trips to Europe and such) on the rest. This lady does not have an income problem, she has a spending problem.
Irony of being pulmonary specialist and can’t fix her own pulmonary health.
I think that happens a lot on medicine
Probably the reason she chose the specialty.
That’s incredibly stupid. That’s like saying irony of being a fireman who couldn’t prevent his own house from burning in a wildfire.
Or her mental health for that matter.
That just goes to show they really don't solve health issues in the healthcare industry. They palliate symptoms with drugs and call it a day.
Modern humans create 95% of their own stress. She knows the answer to the problem and she's is worried what people who dont care about her are thinking. She has the one thing most people would give everything for (a person who would give up everything to see her happy and healthy) and she is trying to throw that away for an imaginary standard of success. She is choosing this stress.
We are in Houston, make 150k, and live VERY WELL on half of our income. We don't feel like we go without anything we want and all of our needs are met. We invest 30% and save a lot in sinking funds for vacations, future cars, etc. Live simply. All the excess is not necessary. They can make it pretty much anywhere on that salary if they would cut all the boujee excessiveness that I suspect is happening, because for real... who thinks 500k is not enough?! lol
Depends on where you live inbthe Houston area.
@@insideoutsideupsidedown2218 please define that statement. I mean, anyone making 150K household isn't living in River Oaks or some such, but you can live just fine in almost ALL of Houston with that yearly salary. Signed, another Houstonian.
We make 120 in Canada and it is defintley a struggle. Old cars paid for in cash . The main high costs are the mortgage, house insurance, property taxes and groceries. Also because hubby's job takes $700 a month for retirement and it isn't optional.
@@breezybre2670which is below average , if you are living in Ontario or BC, it is understandable that you are struggling. I am living in Alberta, average salary is over 70k per person here. I guarantee you, with over 140k, your are ok in Alberta. Maybe move somewhere else less pricey like Alberta or even Saskatchewan (quite cheap and better wages than Ontario)
Yeah there's not a place on the planet I couldn't get by on $500k per year.
It would take a special kind of stupid to not live on 500k a year. They must take multiple expensive vacations and eat out for every meal and have the most expensive cars you can buy
Their house is the biggest outflow of their income. She said 200k left and I am willing to bet they have a million dollar house value. They have looked at houses on the coast and for what they make and what they have now, it is more than double the cost where they want to go. It would make me think twice as well.
Unless you are a doctor have no clue what you’re talking about. The multiple vacations that we take throughout the year of her mental health, enter prevent burnout. This particular physician is in critical care which means on a daily basis. She is dealing with extremely sick and dying patients often requiring multiple rounds of CPR throughout the day, and stat intubation. People outside of the medical field do not understand what we go through and the mental drain and trauma that we deal with. The vacations that are taken or not frivolous, and for the simple fact of blowing money it’s to get your mental health back and to allow your mind to recuperate. Allow you to do your job well. It’s easy to be insensitive when you think people have an excessive amount of money. However, I can guarantee if you did for only an hour what this woman does on a daily basis, you would run away, screaming change is hard for anyone and as positions you are taught to put a lot of emphasis and time on thinking out decisions, and typically do not make abrupt/impulsive choices. This woman is doing the right thing by asking for help and getting an outside opinion.
@@jazzman528 absolutely getting consensus from a third party can be beneficial but that doesn't excuse bad behavior. Because the caller is a woman. They never call out women.
I appreciate the kindness and validation they showed in this, because I don’t think most of us could respond to that extent. A good chunk of America would willingly move somewhere and knowingly accept allergy problems to have half of the income they would even after the pay cut and higher cost of living lol
I pray for these people. Couldn’t imagine being in their financial situation. I hope they make it through this.
If I was making ~$600k/year, I'd be living on $50k, investing the rest and not have to work after 5-10 years on a huge nest egg.
I think that it's easier to say that because of lifestyle creep and the fact that you have the money to do more. Not saying I won't do it, but most people will not
Nearly 40% of that is gone to taxes FYI
Depending on if her schooling is paid off as well.
She sounds so scared. What scares me is being renovicted from my apartment, which is already at 37% of my income, and becoming homeless because current market rents would eat up to 74%. I don't want to move either, but at least she has resources to fall back on if she and her family prioritize her health over having an extra 200K. You can do this, Dani!
Current market rates would eat 74%??? Do you mind sharing the state/city? That’s insane
“Renovicted”. I’m assuming that’s not a typo and a newly coined term. Clever!
How much you pay monthly on rent?
@@ViggsPR That's relative to MY income, which is admittedly very low and fixed due to disability. I'm in Ontario, Canada (near Toronto). In my city, market rents have gone up nearly 32% in a year and they likely won't go down any time soon. I've been in my current apartment for 13 years, which is rent controlled - this gives my landlord a huge incentive to try to get me out so they can raise the rent. If I need to find a new place, my rent would immediately be doubled, if not tripled. I would also need to start paying utilities because nothing is inclusive in today's world. We have a huge housing crisis in this province and competition is severe so I would also face the barrier of not having a good credit score because I haven't used credit in decades and I'm effectively 'credit invisible' at this moment. It would actually be a HUGE mess if my landlord is successful in evicting me (and it wouldn't be because of rent arrears).
@@NicE-jq3wv Nope, not a typo! A somewhat new'sh tactic for landlords to evict good tenants paying their rent every month but who are below market rent.
This call sickens me.
🤦🏻♂️
This call has less to do with money and more to do with the fear of change. If I found myself in her shoes I would move in a second. My husband would not. It has to do with our flexibility and ability to try something new and scary.
And she is a doctor? This is greed talking. Why even call in. Wow. I’m glad I’m me.
This goes to prove that wealth is relative because we all live to our means. Bigger salary, bigger house, bigger dreams. Not always, but most times. I know because I had debts before I ‘met’ Dave. It was a problem. I solved it. And now I have a new problem: how do I save more! It’s inevitable. The human condition.
Yes, more money meant more expensive vacations, house and vehicles for us
Bigger money doesnt need to mean a lifestyle creep. People have the ability to choose how to live. They can earn 400k a year and still save 90% of their income netting them millions while also living comfortably. They are earning more, but still havent learned good money management.
@@kingsgold a slightly superfluous comment. Of course all of that is possible.
On the top end yeah, but Wealth isn’t relative on the floor. It’s very objective.
I've heard that there is an actual correlation between your wealth and how you view yourself. You're always comparing yourself to others who have more than you. When you have more, you tend to be in areas of people like you. It also gets to a point where you just have so much money that the psychology of it can make you see people as "less than."
Not saying all people are like that to be clear.
Poor little rich girl. Lots of folks doing very well under 100k.
I must have missed the part where she was spoiled...
@@SnifferSockthe fact she has a fear on having to live on a yearly salary larger than what people make in 10 years?
She lives in her own bubble of reality that 99% of people will never experience
@mightymouse9001 I must have missed that part too. Her fear is uprooting her entire family's life for her own benefit (health). Taking a large pay cut makes it even harder.
She will be homeless because she is totally out her mind such stupid creature she lives in a unreal world
She's a doctor who worked her ass off to get where she is. Good for her.
Pay and living in a rich area is what's keeping her there. She can barely talk. Money is not everything. You have a wake up call. Do somethingabout it.
Good response, this caller certainly came from money and has never really had to make tough decisions like this before. On the one hand it is scary making a decision like this…especially coming from a mindset where only 4-500k is considered a cut. But in the other hand…it is hard to find much sympathy for somebody who is so out of touch with what a typical situation is.
Yeah, no. She’s an accomplished physician and is paid accordingly and is trying to make a decision that’s in her family’s best interest. But you keep being you.

She actually sounds stressed lol. If I was making 500k I wouldn't be calling a show to complain, I'd be rich
I love watching people, especially my family, when they say, my income it’s not enough, and the amount of money they spent on shitty stuff amazes me. I am a single mother of 5 working two jobs and finally downsizing to one job, and helping my kids buy a place plus bought my own tiny place making less than 100 thousand but counting every dollar; haircuts, nails, exercise , food, coffee, most everything done at home.

We live in Houston and make about 300k with 2 kids in daycare. We live very comfortably with no debt and save half of our income. If I had health issues I'd happily cut our income in half so I can live long and healthy for my kids.
...and the way you have saved you could do so too -- well done.
I think Ken is right and it’s not really about the finnces as much. A job you love as a doctor is hard to come by. A house you love, your neighborhood, friends, community. I agree with him that it’s much more about those things than the money.
I don't think her reason is "health issues", it's climate. This is why she's hemming and hawing a little bit here. She's only been here for 3 years. I've made it so far. Her accent at that point is sounds Minnesota, Michigan, North Dakota, maybe even canadian, listen to it closely.
Lol these calls are ridiculous 😂
try living on less than $40,000 We've been doing it for years
Seems like mental issues holding her back not pulmonary issues.
I find it hard to believe that a medical specialist would take that drastic of pay cut going from Houston to a major coastal city with a HCOL.
I remember reading "Crazy Rich Asians" a few years ago, and there was a character who looked at what everyone else in the world would see as luxuries they'd never see in their lifetime (the best/ newest cars, fashionable clothes, etc), and he saw them as necessary to his life as food and housing. That's what this call reminds me of.

Sucking up to a rich woman. So brave. So clever.
This is a stupid and pointless call. There’s people with real problems in this world
Wow, this is proof of that recent study that showed the more money you make the more money you think you need
I healed all of my allergies and health problems by eating whole fruits and vegetables, that's it. Healing yourself does not cost thousands of dollars or require you to move. It requires a change in your daily habits, something that many physicians don't know how to do. On average, U.S. medical schools offer only 19.6 hours of nutrition education across four years of medical school, according to a 2010 report in Academic Medicine. Medicine is essentially symptom suppression and doesn't necessarily fix the exact cause of the problem. What's holding her back is not wanting to change her habits, including her finances. People create their problems then try to justify their way out of them.
To everyone in the comments criticizing the woman. She never said she couldn't live on the $400-$500k. At the very beginning she said it was more of a personal than financial question. She also said she felt like she'd be choosing herself over her family's future. In addition to a 30%-40% pay cut, she said they'd be moving to a place with a higher cost of living. So, she's just nervous about cutting their lifestyle by probably something like 50%.
50 percent is a lot. It has nothing to do with spending less. It’s all about what they have put away and if they have to pay for other people.
The horrible title brought in everyone who isn't capable of comprehending the call.
@@tam6011 Yep. A 50% reduction is quite a lot. That's not to say that the 50% they have left isn't more than the average household income, a quite a nice income at that, but it isn't the point.
@@SnifferSock And probably a lot of people who didn't even listen to the video but commented anyway.

Health is very important! Their house hold income would be going from the top 2% of household incomes to the top 7%. There will be no tangible difference in their lifestyle by making this move unless they have no money management skills whatsoever.

I live on $13,000 a year and save $400 every month. Looking forward to the yard sale Sniffles is going to have.
You can't live off $500 thousand? That's crazy.
I agree with their advice, and I would also add that once they narrow down two to three towns/cities where they would be willing to relocate to, conducting additional research (taxes, crime mapping, amenities/groceries, optional transportation- just in case, other) is necessary.
Also, visiting the area is helpful to see if it is a good fit. Something may look good on paper, but unless you see it, you are not doing your due diligence. Last, if they have to scale back on some of their luxuries, in order for her health to improve, then so be it.
In my area the public schools are very good. Property tax takes care of that. Spending money on private schools is a income flex.

They are so professional and kind…I would not have responded with such kindness to her call.
People don't understand doctor culture. They all compete on what private school their kids go to, what fancy car they drive, what neighborhood and where they take vacations. And unlike business owners or corporate employees who get high incomes by wisely managing their or another businesses money, doctors earn a lot of money by learning a lot about medicine, not finance. The result is a real lack of perspective. That's why a lot of grifters prey on doctors
For someone in the medical field not to know that the Northeast is one of the best areas for that field is amazing. Jobs galore from Philly to Boston. Much higher cost of living , but I'm sure her salary would be adjusted accordingly. My guess is she is really attached to her extended family.
