A Modern Twist on a Trestle Style Dining Table Build (How To)

- In this video I go through the process of building a new dining table for our house. I chose to go for a trestle style table with a modern look to it. Throughout the build I cover the process and expand on some thoughts about the design as well as share some tips and tricks. I finally have some success using my planes and move more towards hand tool woodworking. I also got a bit lazy towards the end and used my CNC to do the dovetails.
Watching the C&C and later seeing the cut it made is mesmerizing for me.
I will try and include more of that in future videos.
@@hillbillychic3933 Funny, along those lines when some videos are sped up and a person is working around a table saw I automatically get nervous. Instinct.
You are a true craftsman sir. I have the same sawmill but cut for other people to make cool stuff. You have a great talent and the tools to go with it 👍
Thank you very much! So much to learn about the whole process still. From choosing the right logs right through to the something I build with it.
Very very very enjoyable. The table is absolutely perfect!
Very happy with the results but it might be bad luck since I lost at cards the first time playing on it.
@@hillbillychic3933 see, I told you so. Next time listen when I explain where to add the secret mirrors in the top.
Great looking project!! I think you made the right call by not going black with the legs.
Thanks Alan!
Now that was a project! Turned out looking good and Bert and Ernie seemed to have been a big help.🤣
It did seem to go on for a bit.. Back to milling some wood.. I have a nice couple of Walnut logs to mill.
I've been looking forward to this one and it didn't disappoint, just beautiful !
Glad you enjoyed it!
Unbelievable craftsmanship, beautiful finished product!
Thanks a lot for sharing!
Glad you liked it! Thank you!
' Looks great!
Thanks Bo!
There’s a goat in the road!
Good thing there's no traffic..
Beautiful table, well done! Loved that the goats were involed in the building process!
Thank you so much.. I enjoy having the goats around although sometimes they get into a bit of trouble.
Nice bar clamps.
Yes they are.. Hopefully my friend will forget I have them.
It turned out outstanding!!!
Amazing job 👏 🙌 👌
Thank you!
Nice job!!! Pecan is a beautiful wood and I’m anxious to use that species in one of my own builds sometime.
Thanks!! Probably my favorite looking wood but it's my least favorite to work with.
Very nice!
Thanks!
Well Done. Probably the best editing and most informative video you've created. There were several tips I got from there. And how have I never created a glue box upside down holder thingy. Making a few this weekend now.
I was yelling at the screen when you mentioned needing a longer board for the router. Great you put that all in there so we see the whole thought process.
Glad it was helpful and thanks for watching! Sometimes things don't occur to me as fast as I would like them to..
Best trestle table video. Technique, dimensions, etc. Same type table that I want. Question about the upright/horizontal support members glueup. Is the upright piece allowed to expand and contract across the grain? An assembly similar to breadboard ends might be better. Elongated holes through the tenon for the two outside dowels. Glue only the center few inches. Also a shopmade breadboard end jig to route the tenon.
Looking back at the video the tenons were somewhat loose fitting but I did not take that into account. I think I probably got lucky and since I made this during the summer the fit would only get looser as the humidity drops. I also don't think I oversized the hole on the tenons to allow for expansion. Live and learn.. The table is holding up well but I do wish I had painted the upright red oak pieces black. I'm not really liking the pinkish hue that the red oak has.
What do you mean “mica powder because liquid stains the wood more”? Does mica make it more/less liquid? Do we want the wood to be “stained”?
We do not want the wood to be stained, just the epoxy dyed to the color we want. I think the dye will come out of the epoxy and stain the wood. You can either use the mica powder to eliminate that or pre seal the wood before using the epoxy with more epoxy or people also use shellac.
How far did you put your table Legs in on each end.
About 11" which has worked out pretty well if someone is sitting at the end of the table.
What cnc do you have, have all the tools you have , a new Virginia Tech kiln, a sawmill, but no cnc
I have a powermatic 2' X 4' CNC. I certainly don't keep it busy enough but it's handy to have. It was the only one that I could ensure was delivered while I was home from from my job on ships at the time. I have no issues with it but might go for something different like an AVID if I was to do it again.
