I bought the original version of this watch in Vietnam 1973. Mine did not have a hacking movement. In 2015, I sold it in original condition to a collector. He was a happy camper and I was pleased to have it go to a good home.
This is almost certainly going to be my next acquisition after receiving a seiko 5 for my anniversary last year. Very nice and well considered review-really great lighting and camera-work around the Turtle/Alpinist comparison, too. Subscribed!
Great review of a great watch! Seiko has hit a home run with this one. Good luck with your move! Looking forward to seeing that "Shinola Runwell" review!
So that's what that is. I just got this watch a few days agoI knew something was up with this bracelet but I was clueless until I read your comment . Thank you so much!
SRP777 owner here. One thing that does not get enough praise is the new silicon strap, it is lightyears ahead of the SKS rubber straps in comfort and aesthetics. I'll also swap it with a few NATO straps and it looks right at home on those too.
Excellent video my friend. I really enjoyed your reviews of the Seiko's. Japanese watches are something I don't know a lot about yet am eager to learn. Another nice Hamilton would be nice to review.
You're very welcome. You singlehandedly brought me to the hobby of knives. with the:"difference between $40 and $400 knives). Just bought the ZT 0450cf which is amazing in itself and then it's time for the big one... the Sebenza.. so my Credit Card Company thanks you.. so do I.
Fantastic review mate, just as my thoughts. I got my SRP775 about a week ago it has not left my wrist. Not too keen on the bracelet still. Keep up the good work.
Good video sir! Really cool watch, glad to see the hacking movement made it across, that should be the bare minimum for Seikos divers, especially considering Invictas have had this movement for 3 years. They need to pull the plug on the SKX and get it upgraded (if think they may be in the process of doing so). The chapter ring is a serious clanger though, that should never leave the factory like that, even more worrying is the volume of misaligned watches that are already in the market. Poor poor construction, but hopefully it's just aesthetic.
I'm in love with this thing! Just waiting for prices to drop (it's been pretty hard to find for under $300...then again, I haven't been shopping on eBay)
I love how beat up your skx009 looks. Seems to have aged very well. I got mine only a few weeks ago so it will take a while to get to where yours is. But I scratched the crap out of mine trying to change the strap with the wrong tool. Never make that mistake again.
I really felt in love with the Alpinist model. I started to love the combination of green dial plus brown strap since I first saw a picture one of the Orient Star Somes models, but the case size of those is too large for my wrist (in my oppinion), so I hoped one day I'll find a green dial/brown strap watch for myself. And here it is. It looks so naturally, colour combination reminds me of a forest :) PS And the Turtle really is one of the greatest affordable+robust timepieces of the year, IMHO.
I was tempted to buy this, but again on the gold ones I understood there were quality issues. Being a cabinet maker and restorer of fine furniture I have a predisposition to accuracy perhaps even more so when regarding aesthetics, so on the gold ones at least its a deal breaker, could it be fixed ? yes but its adding to the total cost of ownership. I own another SRP249J1 its my workshop beater so the same movement that has facility's that I want, I also posses the Seiko skx007 a classic seiko and cheap enough to mod, Advice on moving download a list of things to be done from the internet and prepare before hand, packing things that you wont be using the month beforehand and label the boxes by room making the kitchen and bedding a priority with a brew kit easily accessble on arrival to your new dwelling also make note of the pizza shop in the new town and order pizza for the first night! (or two)
I was so excited to see this pop up on my subscription feed! A great review as always. :-) I absolutely adore my Turtle. It's become my daily wearer, and I've gotten many compliments on it. Some people think it's too big for a lady to wear, but I rock it anyways. Doesn't fit too bad on a 6.5in wrist! The misaligned chapter ring is a bit annoying, and I've already put a nice scratch in the crystal, but in the end it just gives the watch more character IMO.
Nice review. Still in my honeymoon period with my golden turtle. I just love the way the gold markers shimmer in the light. Mine is a bit misaligned but i can live with that. Not really noticeable to the non ocd user. But I must say the misalignment on this turtle is jarring. I am suprised this passed the qc of seiko.
I have this srp775 and regularly taking it below 100 ft dive and loving it. If they integrate a ceramic bezel, i would still be glad to pay more for it.
I already bought an SKX before they become unavailable. I'm wondering if I should just keep EDCing the SKX or get one of these and put the SKX away as a collector piece? Or just get this anyway lol.
Nice review bud. My chapter ring isn't misaligned which I'm happy about. We bought at the same time from the same dealer. It might be smart for others to wait until these show up for good prices in us dealers so a return would be less of a hassle. Still loving mine and agree big upgrade from the sk series. Why the move? New job?
What is the best place to purchase one of these from? i remember that in the video a price was mentioned, but i havent been able to find it that cheap anywhere, especially domestically. Please help!
So the SRP775 is an SKX007 with an upgraded movement to that of Seiko Monster and a case to that of the old Turtle. It costs a lot more than SKX007 or the Monster, though (I can find a Monster for ~$240, Turtle for ~$400). Oh, and I can't help it - the gold lettering on the bezel bugs me. It's too pimpy for a tool watch. I have a sneaky suspicion that Seiko movement 4r36 is coming to the SKX series in not too distant future (even though that new series will likely be called SRPsomething).
Love it, but shame Seiko is known for the markers on the dial and edge not lined up. I've recently bought a SNZF17J1 "Sea urchin" from Japan and the 12 and 1 o'clock markers don't line up. :(
I was going to buy the turtle about a month ago but thought it would be too big my wrist only 7.25 so i got the ska 371 its OK , but still i like the turtle a lot. may have to buy a turtle yet.
Really good review, question what do you think of the bulova 98b203 i want to buy it but i dont know if I should go for the seiko srp 777 or the bulova 98b203, please answer thanks.
Now that i've seen the Oris 65 Bronze, i'm no longer hot about the gold bezel insert markings. Oris did it right by placing the bronze on the bezel side. Much subtler and classier.

I don't get it, people talk about the most nerdy non important aspects of watches, but the chapter ring is out of alignment and that is no big deal? lol.. That should be more important than the movement being that my SKX is +2 in 24 hours.. and everything is in perfect alignment.. Unless you're really a watch enthusiast to the nerd level.. Just buy the one you like aesthetically the most.. that is really the only important factor in this.. That and the price... cause they are very similar watches in quality and build. Id go for the SKX myself .. Great review though.. enjoyed it. Also did you mean to say 007? I thought the 009 was a smaller watch
For that money , everything should be aligned... A cheap sub beater watch for me was an invicta sub homage I paid like 50 dollars for on sale on amazon.. that watch was awesome build quality, a +/- 3 seconds for the life time of the watch.. amazingly... everything was in alignment and I beat the hell out of that thing for like 8 years and it still runs and has no major damage. great value.. I also have a g shock, one of the blacked out military ones think the 6900 type.
No problem man. Maybe I got lucky.. I don't know, but this is the one I got, and I can't fault it at all.. There was nothing about it that I didn't like. Quality was just as good as my skx007 and even had more accurate movement.. Like i said i just could have been lucky.. www.amazon.com/Invicta-8926OB-Stainless-Automatic-Bracelet/dp/B000JQFX1G/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1529436021&sr=8-6&keywords=invicta+diver
Thanks for answering! I am currently in the military, and my Amphibia sure has taken a beating! I think they look really cool, and they have really fascinating engineering and history as well, so it would be great to see a review of one! :)
@@marcmiyamoto I've seen their made in Japan Turtles have the same thing. Makes me like Seiko a lot less when they can't align chapter rings or bezels. Then to have them retail for about $1000 AUD. Huh where did that comparison with the SNK809 come from suddenly? It's a radically different style of watch and the turtle is 5 times more expensive. If you want to compare it to a 5, a Sea Urchin would be a logical choice.
If you got the equipment that can pop out the crystal, you can easily fix the chapter ring issue. Just rotate the chapter ring 180degrees and put the crystal back.
The chapter ring alignment if off on the watch in your video! I have yet to find a new Seiko Turtle with good alignment with the chapter ring. All three, in three different stores, had alignment off. Also, the bezel alignment was off too (less of a concern for me at this price). WTF Seiko? Stop making watches in Malaysia. The Quality Control is garbage.

The steel bracelet has a neat extra clasp as a diving extension - it can then be easily worn over a wetsuit.
