Thank you for not using fondant! I can't tell you how disappointing it is to see the thumbnail of a beautiful cake, click on it, and then find out that half of it was sculpted out of something that tastes like wax lips. Excellent recipe. I'm definitely going to try this.
Sarah Leonard goodness what kind of fondant do you use that tastes like wax lips. There are some out there that are very tasty & some not so tasty but I’ve never tasted wax lips before
I've only ever used it myself once, and that was whatever brand is sold in the cake decoration section of the Michael's craft store chain. I've eaten multiple professionally decorated cakes that were covered in fondant, including a very fancy wedding cake that looked like a peacock, and their fondant tasted the same (everyone at the table agreed that all of the fondant they had ever eaten tasted that way). Hi John, I love this recipe however I wasn’t going to buy a bunch of baby pumpkins to make the stems. So there are a couple of methods to make the stem that I found work really GREAT 👍. The first method is, I used a piece of a large pretzel stick dipped in dark chocolate. The second thing I did was to take an actual stem and make a mold of it out of food-safe molding compound. Then once the mold was ready I either used moldering chocolate, fondant, gum paste or melted chocolate in the mold to make the stem. I even had a friend of mine roll out Tootsie rolls into the shape of a stem for a less expensive and less technical way of making a stem. With any of these methods you can make everything on the cake completely eatable. I hope my suggestions help. Thanks for the wonderful video. Take care, Dee😊

You could use tootsie rolls for the stem... just an idea. If you melt them a little, they are completely moldable and best of all, edible. Love the video!
And safer than marzipan! Catching the microwave on fire was not fun! This was in 2005 and I never did a spice cake after that. And when the firefighter took them out of the oven, he called them muffins. That's what made me finally break into tears.

I first saw this video in 2018 and jumped on doing these -- I LOVE them! They are a lot of work but they make excellent dessert gifts for friends at Halloween or at Thanksgiving. Just a few suggestions: 1. Actually, if you turn OFF the mixer and add the confectioner's sugar with a spatula, you avoid the whole "poof" effect entirely. Once it's incorporated enough so it won't kick-back, turn the mixer back on and proceed to blend well. I learned this trick last year and I love it! 2. I'm planning to make these again this year as Halloween gifts and have decided to do something a little different. I'm going to make them white pumpkins so I've decided to put cream cheese frosting all over, but thinly. Then I'll mold them until I like the shape. THEN -- this is the new part -- I plan to coat them with white chocolate ganache. That should give them a nice, finished look. And the white-chocolate ganache will add another layer of flavor. 3. I freeze them before I add the frosting. I do this because it makes slicing the end and frosting so much easier. They'll stay fresh for up to 2 weeks in the freezer. In fact, that's a trick I learned from professional bakers. 4. To make the stems, I take the extra cake that I trimmed away and mix it with a little left over frosting to make -- cake-pops! It is how you make cake-pops but it also works as a sculpt-able cake, too. Using that, you can sculpt very realistic edible stems. Mixing the cake and orange or white frosting gives them a very roughened look and darkens it a bit. Try it!
Citlalli Gonzalez Actually, there are some good fondant recipes, such as marshmallow fondant that just literally tastes like marshmallows and is pretty much marshmallow playdoh :3

I’d like to use rum soaked white raisins in it. And btw, if you don’t have brown food coloring, use one drop of red and one drop of green to make brown. ❤
Could this work with 2 large bundt cake pans and make a large pumpkin? I ain't got time for all of this, I'm Hispanic, this would be way too many pumpkins for my family for Thanksgiving!
Brilliant Bonny! Yes, you can make it huge and it would be so real looking! I would use the half (equator) part as the stopping point for a slice. Then once you have served the top portion, begin slicing the bottom half. You might really pack the center hole with filling, that way it will distribute the filling to more portions. Thanks for the one big cake idea!
I did this years ago for my daughter's birthday. I used chocolate on one half, and vanilla on the other and frosed a third of a twinkie green for the stem. It was cute and tasted great too.
This dude is like the messiest baker on RUclips, This is the third cake tutorial I have watched and in each one he is gracelessly cracking eggs, dropping flour over the sides of the bowl and I don’t even want to start with what he ends up doing with the powered sugar #freakinloveit #keepingitreal
“….the messiest baker…” You haven’t seen many bakers apparently. There are plenty that are much worse. Besides that, what do you care? Such a weird comment to make especially since you keep watching them - and do not even address his recipes.

I was slightly put off by use of real pumpkin stems at the end - IMO the whole thing should be edible especially if its going to kids. I found mini churros worked perfectly when I did it
I've done this before and it turned out really AWESOME! followed all your ingredients to the very last bit. for the stem, I made use of cinnamon sticks, cut it a few cm tall and voila!

@M.I.A/MIA1 Well, judging from your comment, I'd say there's a helluva lot you don't get. I think you have a very narrow definition of a relationship between two gay men. Hint: gay male relationships are just as complex and varied as any other relationship.
@M.I.A/MIA1 gender presentation has nothing to do with one's bedroom preferences and it's extremely invasive of you to even be trying to figure out the details of his sex life in the first place. he's not "obviously the girl" because he's NOT A GIRL. that's the point of a romantic relationship between two men: they're both 'the man'
@M.I.A/MIA1: It doesn't work that way; if one of them wanted a girl or anyone resembling a girl then he would not be gay. I lived in a resort town near San Francisco that has a large gay population and I never saw a gay couple that was anything other than two men or two women who were alike. The male couples were often both effeminate and the female couples were often both masculine.

I actually just went to your channel and found your American flag cake. What kind of sweetener do you use? Most sweeteners hurt my stomach, esp. sucralose. I'm afraid to have xylitol in the house since it's toxic to dogs - I'd be afraid I'd make something with the xylitol and someone in the household would drop it on accident and a dog would eat it. Aspartame and Stevia taste yucky to me. That's the only sweeteners I know about.
Did you use real pumpkin stems? I was trying to think of a non fondant way to make edible stems.... Maybe a white chocolate mixed with a tad bit of milk chocolate, and soften then shape, using plastic wrap or parchment paper??? Just a thought... I have never done it before...

Bianca C. It makes it more realistic for sure. Who can actually keeps all the ingredients in the bowl?
You should make a video of yourself making one of these cakes, ya know.... to show how much better you can do?
I’d like to use rum soaked white raisins in it. And btw, if you don’t have brown food coloring, use one drop of red and one drop of green to make brown. ❤
Wow, it looks like a real pumpkin! It would fool me. lol
I love everything in this video...the host, the cake, the mixer!
I love the mixer!
Omg that copper mixer is hella sexy!! I couldn’t take my eyes off of it!
Could this work with 2 large bundt cake pans and make a large pumpkin? I ain't got time for all of this, I'm Hispanic, this would be way too many pumpkins for my family for Thanksgiving!
Bonny Martinez that sounds like a great idea also!! Thanks
Oh my goodness - I had the same idea!!! I was actually going to try this this weekend. Great "fall enthusiasts" minds must think alike! :)
It's the Great Pumpkin! Charlie Brown. : ) And yes, brilliant minds do think alike in the fall! ba ha ha!
I did this years ago for my daughter's birthday. I used chocolate on one half, and vanilla on the other and frosed a third of a twinkie green for the stem. It was cute and tasted great too.
I bake, I am a professional and the idea to do punpkins from that kind of mould is really original and appreciate best regards from Mexico City
No fondant thank god
Gross stuff
Lol I feel SO RUDE when I peel it off to eat cakes at a party but I will not eat sheet sugar dough 😂
I find his voice very relaxing! I don't really like cake and I can't imagine myself doing all this but I'd love to marry someone that does! I love to cook but baking is much more difficult and precise! Wow all that work but all that joy at the end too! Great video!
Thanks for this recipe and your technique. I actually skipped this video several times because I thought it was more decorating than a recipe. But your use of the bunts is clever and adaptable, so I'm glad I changed my mind about that.
I love watching your baking videos. You seem so genuinely happy doing it, and it's kind of contagious.
I was slightly put off by use of real pumpkin stems at the end - IMO the whole thing should be edible especially if its going to kids. I found mini churros worked perfectly when I did it
You can do stems using molding chocolate or sugar paste for flowers.
Churros..! Yess!
My thoughts exactly how did you do mini churros? Please share
Isaac Thomas pumpkin stems are edible.......
Miffet Blue nobody is gonna wat pumpkin steams especially kids
One can use that handy silicone spatula to scrape the kids off the ceiling, after they consume all that sugar.
c3cubed Do what my parents did. Make kids go outside to play.
@@tweetiebirdism whoa! New concept for today's parents!😂😂
😂🤣
Dead. Back when my 3 grandkids were little they all had ADHD. Can you IMAGINE? OMG. They are all teens now. Thank God they have calmed down.😵😰😈👦😹😹😹😹😹🎃
😂😂😂
I've done this before and it turned out really AWESOME! followed all your ingredients to the very last bit. for the stem, I made use of cinnamon sticks, cut it a few cm tall and voila!
Made this pumpkin cake recipe, everybody LOVED it, including that cream cheese frosting! Keep them coming!
Are we going to talk about the fact that instead of saying “frost” he said “now we are going to enrobe the cakes” 😂
Nope.

The brightest orange I’ve ever seen
Him: it doesn’t look that orange
What a beautiful, genuine person! My little girl and I stumbled on to your video and we found ourselves smiling the whole time and wanting to start baking right away! Thank u for posting!!
So many icing tools that i can MAKE! Oh my gosh!
@@PreppyKitchen well, you have to buy at least the yoghurt container ;)
I loved your video and yes they definitely looked very yummy lol my tummy is hungry😋 thanks for sharing I appreciate it it will be a great idea for this Thanksgiving🍃🎃🍃🦃🌻🍁🍂🍁🍂 from Canada🍁 which we will be celebrating Thanksgiving tomorrow hope you all have a wonderful day 🌥🌞and God bless🕊😇 keep the great work up😉👍
Dont you dare throw away that cottage cheese container!
"we don't want a saggy pumpkin" LMAO
Daniela Pagliaro yea cause I’m already swaggy
Oh my goodness these are the cutest things ever! I have a large 3D pumpkin pan, but I've never been able to make the cake look good with icing, so I'm going to try your technique! LOVE it!
Im glad he use butter cream for the decor and not extreme sugar paste/frosting. Soft cheese or butter cream can be sweet enough 👍 I like how he make beautiful cakes and do not forget the taste! Very cute pumpkins, but i would probably put eye decors on them in request from my kids
"it's fine... walk away" 😂😂😂
Great job! Years ago, these are definitely something I would have done for fall or Thanksgiving. I used to make a large pumpkin cake similar to these baby ones by using two Bundt pans...my kids loved it.
"this is called a Snacking Top" - my favorite quote of the week lol
This is the first time I.ve ever seen or heard of you "Preppy Kitchen" , but Wow!!! You are enjoyable to watch not to mention you can explain your process easily and enjoyably. Such a talented young artist.
12:52 his humour is soo bad that it actually makes it funny 😂😂😂
LITERALLY 🤣
Leah B yeahhhhhh😂
Love it
Leah 😂
He's so funny
you could probably use a cookie piped out in a star tip or like a churro for an edible stem. I definitely want to try this!!
Ozziepup Oooh, piping through star tip is a great idea!!! Could be cookie, churro, or even melted (dyed) white chocolate
Have a true that stuffed with cream cheese and pumpkin That way it's its own little burst of happiness
mmm great idea! a churro would match perfectly with the pumkin cake!
Imagine ur husband in the kitchen whipping this up yes please
imagine his husband getting whipped in the kitchen instead LOL
Besides the pumpkin 🎃. He’s adorable 🥰🥰🥰
5:27:Add a drop or two!
Adds half bottle!😂
My 4-year-old daughter - “Is that guy real? Let’s go to his house so he can make it for us, ok?”
Awe❤
Aww bless her.
That is so cute
Clever girl.
Love it!
It's the first video I saw and I already love you. Thanks for giving us alternatives for some ingredients! Since i'm allergic to coconut oil it was helpful to know how to replace it!
I'm so emotional. I loved your macaron video and it helped me out a lot so of course I watched this video. Your vibes and energy are just amazing and I feel 100% happier watching your videos
You do painting, you taught Science AND you bake! Like, you're literally the best dude i have ever seen! ♥
hearing him mention his husband is so healing
Bro my lunch teacher turned it off when he said that
My goodness, maybe it would have been best if he hadn't said it at all.
So controversial, and so not what the video's about.
These pumpkins are adorable!!! Omg 😍
Omg you’re such a sweetheart!! This is so cool and simple. Thank you for making this!! 🧡🧡🧡
Love this video!!!!
I love a guy who laughs whis own, like non-jokes.
I made this for my friends during Halloween - it tasted great! I even tried to do a stevia version for my relatives - still amazing. Thank you for this!
So labor intensive. I hope your guest appreciate you as much as I did while watching you create that little gem.
I think this is a brilliant idea! I love your creativity and how well you explained the instructions. I want to thank you for this fun and informative video that has inspired me to try and make a sugar free adaptation. As a diabetic I can not make it exactly as you did, but through necessity, will have to modify the recipe. Thank you again for the inspiration!!!
Keto Meals and Recipes I do keto, too! I'm so modifying this recipe for keto, as well! It's easily modified, I think - especially the frosting part!!!
Glad to hear you are on keto too. I found this to be such a cute idea. And yes, the frosting is really easy to make keto. Cheers
Keto Meals and Recipes yes, I've been doing keto since January of 2017. It's a big part of how I manage my chronic inflammatory pain and fatigue without prescription medication. I'm sure you've done it a lot longer, though. I just love this pumpkin idea, though!
How do you make Keto frosting of all things? Sounds impossible!
I just made these pumpkins for Thanksgiving desert. THEY ARE AMAZING!!
And FUN to make too!!
Thanks!!👍🏻🎃👍🏻
Did you use real pumpkin stems? I was trying to think of a non fondant way to make edible stems....
Maybe a white chocolate mixed with a tad bit of milk chocolate, and soften then shape, using plastic wrap or parchment paper??? Just a thought... I have never done it before...
So! So! So! Perfect for Fall/Halloween season! And let me tell you, me and my husband are Halloween Who**s! How did I miss this one after 3 years!!? Loved it! Thx for sharing.
Richard
Halloween Who*es omg that made me laugh so bad 🤣🤣🤣 nothing wrong with a Halloween who*e 🤣🤣🎃👻
my new favorite youtuber! He's amazing!
I’ve always wondered what was the reason for alternating between adding the dry mixture and the pumpkin (milk in some other recipes) at the end of making your batter? The cakes look amazing, can’t believe it’s all buttercream 😍
Thank you, yesterday I made this cake and my whole family loved it, definitely one of the most delicious I've ever had.
I just found your channel today and I must say I'm absolutely in love. You have such an inviting personality and your videos are so well put together. To tell the truth, this has been a very rough couple weeks for me and seeing you make this cute pumpkin has made me smile and not feel sadness for the first time today. I really appreciate that and I thank you for making this video. ♥️🎃
Wow that looks delicious and very yummy thanks for sharing my dear friend 👍👍👍👈👈🌷🌷
This looked way easier than I could have imagined! I really enjoyed watching the video! I wasn’t planning on actually making these when I clicked on the video, but now I plan too! I’m going to use pecans for the stems I think!
It's my first time watching you and I LOVE THE WAY YOU TEACH! So clear and fun ❤️
Blessings from Asturias, Spain
Me too
OMG. John, you are such an adorable, skilled, and talented teacher/artist/baker/entrepreneur! I LOVE pumpkin and this precious recipe. You make me wanna bake! I’m going to make my first attempt with a boxed cake 😱 and store-bought frosting😬 for practice. My tween/teen kids are all in on this project!! I’ll let you know how it goes, or doesn’t!
WOW TUFS your talents. I’m an average home cook and feel like I could do this. Love your cookbook.❤❤❤❤❤
This is too damn cute. I'm gonna make these for Halloween!
Thank you RUclips recommendations for blessing me with this wholesome baking content
I’m sooo happy RUclips recommended this channel. You’re like a breathe of fresh air. I subscribed within two seconds I’m going to start binge’ing your channel now 🥰😂
Welcome to the channel!!
These are so cool. My daughter is getting married in a few days and is having a fall themed wedding. Her wedding cake is actually pumpkin with cream cheese filling and a chiffon frosting. Imagine how adorable a half dozen of these would look on her dessert table! Just found your channel and will be following now. I bake, but not anything sculpted……these are just too darling for words. Thanks so much for sharing 🤗🧡
