The original has so much more effort put into it. The camera movement, the anatomy of the characters, the facial expressions, and the choreography. In the new version they mostly stand in one spot and push their energy at each other. I've more or less been able to finally accept Crystal for what it is, but seeing it side by side with the original like this really puts into focus how little care is put into the animation this time around.
Not to mention, like... the emotions behind 90's battle, as Koan is actually a character here, with her own goals, desires, fears etc, so the viewer doesn't just root for Rei, but is also able to sympathize with her enemy.
The graphics and visual effects are awesome in the new Crystal version, the powers of the senshis seem stronger. However, as a big Sailor Mars fan... I prefer the old one. She's gutsy, strong, passionate and fearless. I know the new Mars is more like the one in the mangas, but I find her so boring. She's calm, quiet and not that strong. I had a hard time watching the series because of that.

More like Crystal took the Sisters back to the way they were in the manga. It wouldn't have been bad if it weren't so rushed. Putting even a little filler in the fights would have at least made it more interesting.

For me, one of the highlights of Sailor Moon R were the battles between Koan and Sailor Mars. For the most part, battles in Sailor Moon are just stock animation, poof, dead. However when Koan and Mars clash, they really put their all into it: blasting each other with fire, using physical attacks, and there's a huge sense of back and forth. It shows how much more fun it is when your villain and your hero are evenly matched. There's a genuine sense of suspense, as there is no way of knowing who is the strongest. It's way more exciting then the Crystal battles, where the Sisters just completely overpower the Senshi with little to no effort until a convenient Moon Princess Halation kills them dead. And let's face it, in Crystal, Berthier made Ami look absolutely pathetic, even though they normally make her look like a chump or the weakling of the Senshi. Seriously, that snow attack and a really half arsed Double Team. Berthier just was like LOL NOPE. Bitch bought her A Game.
The rivalry between the Inner Senshis and the Ayakashi sisters were the highlight of Season 2 for me. I know they were padding the episodes to buy more time for the manga but it actually added to the drama and made every showdown more intense.
The chess match between Bethier and Mercury in the 90's anime was an excellent example of brain not brawn. The fact that Mercury was going to win even after Bertheir cheated really showed the genius of Ami.
Definitely. I know the newer one is closer to the manga, but Sailor Mars got ONE cool hit in Sailor Moon Crystal. ONE. And then she was hit with the inescapable wall of flame.
I wish the sailor guardians in SMC got to actually be strong. Every single time a they go up against a bad guy they get beaten and/or captured. How the HECK did they end up being protectors of the princess if they keep getting beaten.
Old one, i am one of those people who think that when it come to which one is better is 50/50 but i hate mars new burning mandala is just shooting fireball. The fire wheel look unique and sharp. And the battle is longer. I want to see more battle between the sisters and thensailor soldiers intensely. Both series still dont have that.
I never liked Burning Mandala in the 2nd season of Crystal because it wasn't perfectly circle. The top half of the Mandala is off center and it bothers me so much. Also... Crystal's animation in general. UGH. Old by far. It's the best by far. Much more emotion.
I honestly love Crystal because I'm comparing it to the Manga and not the old version, but it would be cool to see an updated version of the old Sailor moon, especially now that they can be a lot edgier than they were back then

The classic version will always have a place in my heart. I also love the new version and how dramatic it is. I would of enjoyed multiple rounds like in the original but I understand it's the manga

Sorry but the original actually brings tension to the table, there’s an actual fight. Crystal/Manga it was just you knew that all the girls were going to get kidnapped (the Mars fight was the stupidest one), the biggest twist was that Venus was saved.
The old one, definitly. The music of T. Arisawa is Irreplaceable ! With rythm ! The new music have no real notes, just some choral effects. And drawings...... They do not respect the skeleton !! Too much special effects. Characters are flabby, too skinny with babby faces. Rule n°1 in draws : respect the skeleton.
Y’all manga lovers keep reminiscing the original plot but in fact it’s not that good. Naoko wrote it in the early 90s, the storyline was simple, characters were simple, it’s either good or evil like black and white. The writer team at ToeiAnimation added so much personalities and dynamics to the original story. And don’t forget the anime was what made sailor moon known and successful outside of Japan. Literally blew up. I too read the manga first, back in 1996, hated it, then we got a VCR in ‘97 and I got the Sailor Moon video tape , immediately fell in love.
I like storyline from 90's anime better than Manga/ Crystal. In Manga/Crystal Sailor senshis just killed Ayakashi Sisters but in 90's anime senshis healed them.

Yeah. Their first fight went a lot like how it did in Crystal and the manga only for Mars to win via Deus ex Machina by unlocking Burning Mandala. The second fight, shown here, has Mars turn the tides and win, leaving them both injured. Rubeus then came in and gave Koan a bomb to kamikaze herself and Mars with; right before it goes off, Venus knocked the bomb into the sky while Jupiter detonated it in midair. Anyways, yadda yadda, Koan's suicidal berserker rage, yadda yadda Mars taking a knee to the gut on Koan's behalf, yadda yadda, redemption and purification for Koan. Happily ever after for all.
Here is something interesting, Koan from Crystal is voiced by the same actress who voiced Kagome in Inuyasha which is ironic being how Kagome looks like Rei.
The season 3 of Sailor moon Crystal makes the inner senshi useless. They couldn't even defeat an enemy It will always be Sailor moon or the outer senshi.
You could say the same for the 90’s. It was usually Tuxedo Mask swooping in, having a speech, and just lets Sailor Moon do her special attack to defeat the villain.

The new version has some bad animation... the legs and the arms are just too wrong. And the eyes, it could not convey the feelings the way the old version did/
I Think that the old version has too much expression in Sailor Marses face while they fight. Sailor Mars gets her power from the "war" planet after all. But at the same time, the new version doesn't have enough expression in Koans face, a psychotic witch. The way they move and the way the physics works are alot better in the new version, but their attacks are much worse executed (the Graphics are nice, but the way they make the attacks aren't as good as the ones in the old version)But it feels like I am the only one here who gives both kritik and credit to both of the versions ._.
Yeah I am gonna go with the original version for the fight. Although the animation sequence for Burning Mandala in Crystal Season 3 was way better than Crystal Season 2 and original.
