    Lyrics:
Mama, they try and break me
The window burns to light the way back home
A light that warms, no matter where they've gone
They're off to find the hero of the day
But what if they should fall by someone's wicked way?
    Still the window burns
    Time so slowly turns
    And someone there is sighing
    Keepers of the flames
    Do you feel your name?
Did you hear your babies crying?
Mama, they try and break me
Still they try and break me
Excuse me while I tend to how I feel
These things return to me that still seem real
    Now, deservingly, this easy chair
But the rocking stopped by wheels of despair
    Don't want your aid
    But the fist I make
For years can't hold or feel
    No, I'm not all me
So please excuse me while I tend to how I feel
But now the dreams and waking screams
    That ever last the night
So build the wall, behind it crawl
    And hide until it's light
So can you hear your babies crying now?
    Still the window burns
    Time so slowly turns
    And someone there is sighing
    Keepers of the flames
    Did you feel your names?
Did you hear your babies crying?
But now the dreams and waking screams
    That ever last the night
So build a wall, behind it crawl
    And hide until it's light
So can't you hear your babies crying now?
Mama, they try and break me
Mama, they try and break me
Mama, they try and break me
    Mama, they try
    Mama, they try...

Indeed. I discovered Metallica in the early 2000's and this is one of their best. Eerily, they seemed to have discovered movements like Hikikomori, incels, MGTOW, let rot, before all that stuff had a name, and this is it! I thought I had "discovered" loneliness before it was "on fashion", Metallica proved me wrong... 😝☠

I think the music video shows that the guy is the "Hero of the Day" because he doesn't truly give up. He lives poorly and he doesn't really have anyone that cares for him, and the girl that he has come to his apartment leaves right away rather than staying. He's not happy, and at the end he does try to kill himself, but ultimately he decides to stop. He's the Hero of the Day, even if no one realizes what he's going through.

I was a fresh faced, full eye browed (if you know, you know 💔🥱🤦🏻‍♀️), no gray hair havin 9th grader and Blockbuster was promoting the albums, my friends were getting licenses, the weed was plentiful, the Malboro Reds nowhere close to hurting us yet. Grasping on to every last second of sunlight because we were just so damned happy to spend the days jamming out with eachother and making memories. Sadly, most of my friends have passed far too soon, but us remaining tune-a-holics carry them during each song, especially this first bangin' a$$ hit here, carrying with every bit of life, just like it was last month. Much love to you all out there 😔🥰🤘🏼🤜🏼🤛🏼

This is the song that made me a Metallica fan. Not just that it introduced me to metal and grunge bands. I was a teenager who just bought this random Metallica album along with 4 other cassettes that came to the audio shop. I didn't know anything about Metallica at that time. But this song along with 'until it sleeps' which were together in the albim just surprised me and I kept listening to this on repeat. It's a heavily underrated song as even some Metallica fans are unaware of this gem.

Dylan Dawson well, the thing is, I’d have no problem with them if they didn’t overcopy chords and song structures from Metallica. It’s good to be close to your influences, but don’t borrow more than you need to because they can’t write well on their own. Also it’s the matter of the image they try to depict, I’m sorry but the whole deal with stage names, dyed hair, ripping off mike muir’s bandana, and overkill’s logo just pissed me off. If you’re music’s really that good, why the literal fuck do you need this stupid image created to sell yourself better? If your music is actually good, you wouldn’t need these stupid “character” depictions and asshole demeanor to your fans to make yourselves successful

  • @BMR86

I was 10 years old when this album came out and when it did my older brother who is 8 years older than me, he was 18 at the time, instructed me to find a copy of this CD for him, I lived in the US and he lived in Mexico at the time, my mom gave me the money and I wandered off in our local mall and went straight to the music store and I got a CD for him and a cassette for me of this album, I believe cassettes were cheaper so I had enough money to do that, I remember so vividly putting this cassette in my moms car on the ride home, every song of it reminds of that time and it was my first real introduction to Metallica even though years later I got into their 80s albums, the greatest albums they ever made, this one, stands out as my first experience truly with Metallica, and this song in particular makes me yearn for those years when I was just a 10 year old boy enjoying new music and living with my mother, it's just such a staple for my early teen years in the mid 90s.
I really love this album no matter where it awkwardly stands in their whole catalog, to me it was an eye opening listening experience!

Well it's 2020, i'm about to turn 40 years old, metallica has pretty much always been my favorite band, and to this day I fail to understand the so called "diehard" metallica fans who think that after the black album or after AJFA they weren't any good anymore. I guess some people think that the music style a band starts with is always what they should play and nothing else for any reason, ever. A pretty stupid standpoint honestly. Load and Reload are both fantastic albums, and songs like this one are deep, complex, meaningful and are still great to listen to all these years later, and still will be years from now. That's the mark of truly good music. And that's why most "pop music" gets played to death for a month or two then nobody can stand to hear it anymore.

I’ve been a Metallica fan from the start. Bought kill them all in 1983. Have all their albums. I am a huge fan of thrash metal. Having said that, load and reload are classic Metallica albums. They mix hard rock with melody and it works. Hero of the day is one of my favourite Metallica songs. This band are musical geniuses. They can play hard and fast. And slow and heavy. And throw in ballads every now and then. They’re not afraid to experiment either. Unfortunately, for bands like slayer and ACDC, they are trapped in a box that they can’t get out of. Metallica are free to do what they want.

Oh, they try and break me
The window burns to light the way back home
A light that warms, no matter where they've gone
They're off to find the hero of the day
But what if they should fall by someone's wicked way?
    Still the window burns
    Time so slowly turns
    And someone there is sighing
    Keepers of the flames
    Do you feel your name?
Did you hear your babies crying?
Oh, they try and break me
Still they try and break me
Excuse me while I tend to how I feel
These things return to me that still seem real
    Now, deservingly, this easy chair
But the rocking stopped by wheels of despair
    Don't want your aid
    But the fist I make
For years, can't hold or feel
    No, I'm not all me
So please excuse me while I tend to how I feel
But now the dreams and waking screams
    That ever last the night
So build the wall, behind it crawl
    And hide until it's light
So can you hear your babies crying now?
    Still the window burns
    Time so slowly turns
    And someone there is sighing
    Keepers of the flames
    Did you hear your names?
Did you hear your babies crying?
But now the dreams and waking screams
    That ever last the night
So build a wall, behind it crawl
    And hide until it's light
So can't you hear your babies crying now?

Sabes que has madurado cuando el Load te parece un disco infravalorado. Sentimiento, madurez y un auténtico "ya ganamos todo, hagamos lo que nos plazca". Larga vida a MetallicA.

I remember the shock and scandal when they all cut their hair and the comments of they sold out. I always have and always will love metallica from driving the backroads of a small country town in the early '80s with ride the lightning on cassette, to being a city girl and buying the reload cd. Now their on my RUclips Playlist connecting to my Bluetooth speakers. I will ALWAYS love them.

People have to understand that Metallica, Jamea in particular, matured. They have families, and kids. You can't live in darkness when other people depend on you, and life has so mu h more to offer than just staying angry, sad and horrified like a lot of metal fans do. These guys have a right, like any artist to grow, and change.

My grandfather was a US Marine & former pro boxer. This song reminds me of him so much. Especially the verses “ Don’t want your aid, but the fist I made for years can’t hold or feel “. I am not a crier, but this song always gets me choked up.

I've been a Metallica fan since high school in the mid 80s and saw them at the 25 year reunion of Woodstock. Simply amazing. And I'm still a huge fan, as the anger of my youth gets replaced with the sobriety of age, this band continues to be there with me, and their musicianship continues to grow. This song shows it; it's old now, but they have other songs that prove what I'm saying. Thanks for being there James, Lars, Kirk, Paul, Jason, and of course, Cliff, wherever you are. And a shout out to Dave too!!

Metallica fan of 40 years here! The evolution of metallica is one of broadness and perfection. No one does it better!
