    I think the last F bomb is huge. It not only mirrors what Gina said to BoJack. It is showing that her reputation is becoming shattered due to directors and other actors believing she is difficult. Almost directly after this the director tells Kelsey that while Gina is a great actress she has become more difficult. Kelsey who had high expectations and thoughts of Gina takes back her initial decision to cast her in her movie. This is irreversible since she can’t get that role back.

    • @swiftswalow
      @swiftswalow 5 лет назад +472

      but the sad thing is... she HAS become more difficult to work with. Her trauma does harm her and she harms the projects she is in because of it. Gina has become a hazard and an inconvenience to every single show or movie she works in. It's not that she was a false reputation, she had a true bad reputation because she is difficult to work with, but what people don't see is that it's the reason why she is so difficult to work with and the even sadder thing is that even if they knew it's irrelevant: she is difficult to work with and therefore she won't get many roles, and it's not a surprise, a movie or show takes a lot of time, money and effort, and she is not entitled to put projects in danger only because of her trauma.
      Bojack horseman is a show that defends this idea, your trauma is not a free pass to be shitty.

      Swift Swalow she is stuck though, she can’t get her trauma addressed because she believes by telling the public that Bojack did indeed strangle her on set, that would be all she is known for. She wants to further her career while pushing this real problem aside. And she’s right, I think. Scandal does tend to be the first thing you think of with some celebrities. Her Trauma is no excuse to be a shitty person to others, but I feel for her. There’s not much she thinks she can do. If she had it addressed privately that might help, but the risk of it leaking to the public eye might still be a fear ... poor Gina.

The F bomb is always used when a relationship is damaged beyond repair. and by that point, it's clear that Bojacks relationship with his mom is way beyond salvageable. it hits less hard because it doesn't show the moment that their relationship broke, but it's still significant.

    Season 4 is probably the least hard hitting, particularly in the moment as it’s played for laughs. But when you look deeper it has more meaning - Bojack planned to say “fuck you” to his mom, but when she finally recognised him at the end of Times Arrow, he comforts her, telling her she’s at the old Sugarman Place. It shows how Bojack developed and softened, and how even when he had the chance to tell his mom to fuck off, he comforted her instead, despite everything.

    • @SliceOfDog
      @SliceOfDog 3 года назад +93

      Fully agree. The ending of Time's Arrow is one of my favourite scenes in the whole show, and it gets so much of its power from the F-bomb we get here. The fact that it's played off for laughs almost makes us dismiss it, but its such a powerful concept (tearing into an aging woman with dementia in a moment of clarity) that it sticks with us and informs how we expect Bojack to act. When he's kind to her instead, it's the proof we need that Bojack actually can be redeemed. I've heard some people say she didn't deserve that kindness, but in a way, it wasn't for her. It was for him. He broke the cycle of hate.

    Like, all of them cut deep, and even deeper knowing that it’s such a symbol to the writers about someone’s relationship with Bojack being permanently damaged. And Herb’s and Todd’s both show so much they’ve lost for Bojack. But Charolette’s was so much more.
    It wasn’t someone telling Bojack off, and it wasn’t just someone saying he’s a bad person. It’s the only time I believed someone would never have Bojack in their life again, because I 100% believed what Charolette said. She will kill Bojack if he threatens her family’s happiness again. I love how in season 6, the F bomb represents how Bojacks actions continue to have an effect on people lives. It’s not said by a main character, which I think actually makes it even more impactful, showing that Ginas life is permanently impacted by Bojack, which will continue to affect her and other people in her life, in this case, affecting the jobs of these essentially background characters, despite Bojack not even having any sort of a relationship with these people.

      I think it's brilliant. Every time the f bomb is dropped in Bojack, it actually feels like an emotional bomb. People and shows nowadays use it so often that it has less meaning. Words lose their meaning if they are overused, especially swears and slang. I'm not sensitive about cursing, I do it more than I should. But I think swearing is more meaningful when it is reserved for emotional moments, especially the heavy ones like fuck.

And I'll admit, I felt the one with Gina was just not up to their standards at the time but they even managed to give that a pay off that I didn't know I was expecting.

    • @uknownada
      @uknownada 5 лет назад +61

      I think the one in season 6 is another subversion. Throughout part 1, Bojack is finally getting his life together. He's finally found solice and happiness with himself, at least a little bit. But despite that, he's still caused damage to people, and that damage still resonates with them. That's what the last episode is about. The "fuck" highlights this resonating damage, even though Bojack isn't in the episode at all. The fact that it's verbatim what Gina said to Bojack also emphasizes this.
      No idea if they'll surprise us with a second "fuck" in season 6, but part 2 is REALLY going to be interesting.

      @@uknownada It's interesting to note how when in S6P2, when the guy said "What the fuck is wrong with you?" to Gina, she kind of paused in shock for a second and grasped her neck. This is because that's the same thing she said to BoJack, when he strangled her. When the guy said this same phrase, the traumatic strangling moment came back to her via PTSD flashback, because that phrase was associated with the incident. Just thought it was worth pointing out.

    The episode where Bojack strangles Gina is still one of my favorite to this day, to see him slip deeper and deeper into his addiction, almost taunted by it via the image of the floating Bojack balloon, and then for it all to culminate and the line between fiction and reality is blurred as he finally ascends to come face to face with the root of his misery, how Todd put it in season 3: himself.
    The music is hauntingly peaceful and the expressions on that horse’s face convey great pain, regret, and fear for what lies ahead. A beautiful moment of a beautiful episode of a masterpiece of a show.

    Although it may not seem as meaningful at first, I feel like season 4's F-bomb was Bojack trying to shift the power dynamic by attempting to cut his mother out of his life the same way other characters keep doing with him. All the other F-bombs are used against him when he is undeniably the one at fault, but Beatrice is the only living person he can rightfully blame for some of the bad things in his life. Unfortunately, the dementia robs him of that satisfaction and when the plan backfires, he ends up actually having to take her home with him instead.

She was criticized harshly by the men on set for not being easy to work with. They can’t know what she’s been through because she put on a happy face through the Philbert ordeal. The secret she hid to save her career is destroying it. It takes a female director to break the cycle by looking past the “difficult” reputation.

First when fighting with Herb, then with Charlotte finding him w/ Penny, then with Todd, and finally Gina. I definitely feel like seasons 1, 2, 3, and 5 had the best and hardest-hitting ones. Season 4 was showing how deteriorated his relationship with his mom really was and how he lacked any form of forgiveness, and Season 6 showed how greatly he traumatized Gina in Season 5's F-bomb+the results of that.
