- Jethro Tull's 'Thick as a Brick' performed by Josh Blank Sheet on the banks of Loch Lomond, Scotland.
Thank you everyone for watching and commenting. I'm so happy you took the time. I was on tour with my old band Dream Awake in Europe in 2008 when I shot this on a whim. We were passing through Scotland for some festivals and pub gigs, we camped the night on the shore of Loch Lomond, got up way too early, quickly filmed this, packed up and headed south for Manchester. Lots of comments on the crazy wavering tempo: yes, I look back 11 years later and cringe at that, but I was extremely undisciplined in my youth and had never even heard of practicing to a metronome. I'm a self-taught guitarist and learned this song by pressing my ear the speaker and figuring it out bit by bit. I'm pretty happy with that accomplishment as it's given me so much joy to play this over and over again in pubs all over the world...and on the banks of Loch Lomond! And don't worry, I eventually got a metronome! I still don't use it, but I have one!

Hello! I've been MIA for a while. I plan to sort through and reply to these comments in the next little while, I promise...ish.

One of the things that save you and this absotulety perfect cover is the complete absence of a metronome. It prevents people from really feeling the music, more often than not. Take, for instance, the beautiful and short Pink Floyd's instrumental guitar for "Is there anybody out there". I've seen tons and tons of covers and absolutely none, zero, of them had the emotion the music requests, and what it requests is a precise wavering tempo. I really don't understand how people can be so fond of a perfectly regular tempo in music.
@@cyranodetal Thanks for this comment. In my opinion there are two types of players: The schooled/disciplined ones and the intuitive/emotional ones. I'll never be the schooled type as I find absolutely no joy in it. Gotta be true to yourself and play what feels good! Thanks again and keep on rockin
But time is an illusion 🤔
So keep on playing how you feel, I say. This is music, not robotics, after all.

Wonderful mate, love it.
Thank you Sir for this fantastic cover. My favourite one for chilly mornings while watching how the Sun rises and changes everything around me.
Wow, thanks for the imagery. And it's my pleasure, thank you for watching. Take care.

Awesome!
Excellent rendition. Thanks for the entertainment
Stunning. I've been looking at how to work this song out, and this video is by far the best and most sophisticated version to use as a tutorial. It's going to get studied a lot! Thanks for posting up this excellent video Josh. Great work.
you're welcome and thank you!
amazing....
Bloody well done!!!!! As an Ian Anderson fan from the 60s, this is brilliant!!!!!

Thanks Tom, much appreciated. Please feel free to check out my original music at: joshvandiemen.bandcamp.com/
Great performance, very power- and beautiful! Tull rocks incredibly in the acoustic parts, you did a great job.
Thank you Hanna, yes I especially love the acoustic element of Tull, speaks to me, that Celtic vibe. Have a great one!
If you feel inclined, I have a few albums of original music on my channel as well, feel free to check it out.

Josh - I hope you're still with us after 14 years.
Assuming that you are, I have to tell you that that was the best cover of Thick/Brick I've ever heard played (or attempted in a sad lot of cases.) Guitar = perfect. Voice = perfect (almost to a fault re: impersonation) Most importantly ... cadence = perfect. Well done. I could gush all day but hey - it's been 14 years. Let's see if you're still sitting up and taking nourishment first.
13 years ago and till this day no one has a cover of this song better than this video on RUclips. Dude you are a legend! Do you do private lessons?
I like the wavering tempo- original has it too. Really well done and 12 string was a great choice
Wow now that’s a cover. MAGNIFICENT 👏
Best cover I've ever heard of this tune. Brilliant! Great guitar chops and vocal is spot on. Great work!
An eleven on a scale of one to ten! Nailed it Brother
Oh WOOOOOOOOW! NOT an easy tune to cover, but you absolutely smashed it - AND on a 12 string. Extremely impressive. Kudos!
Regards Mark in the UK
fuck it I'm learning guitar just to be able to play this!!!!
Even the voice very similar to Ian Anderson.
best version i have ever heard and yet it was published in 2008 and just seeing it now what the?????
Haha! better late that never. Thank you for watching, glad you enjoyed it! If you feel inclined, I have a few albums of original music on my channel as well, feel free to check it out.
This should have 1 million views at LEAST
Dude! Oh my God!!! I'm 60 years old and remember Ian and Tull when most of the folks today weren't even a glimmer of a glimmer of an eye. I've been playing this for years my self and you completely have blown my mind to a place it's never been before. Thank you brother.
Hey Brady, I don't get on here much. Thanks for sharing that. I wish I was around back then, best era for music in my opinion! Feel like I was born too late! Thanks so much for watching. Keep rockin.
If you feel inclined, I have a few albums of original music on my channel as well, feel free to check it out. Have a great one!
i cant believe Ian stole this from you!! absolutely first class.. thank you... never heard a better version
i had to leave a second review, this is incredible!!!
Holy Moses, that's great!
ha, I have revisited this vid again.. so great, it is the best acoustic playing of this I have heard on YT... and recorded outside. I hope you are doing well Josh and still playing the genius of Ian Anderson....
Just incredible cover
Pure and maniacal. I love it man. So good.
Outstanding cover! Both your voice and your guitar work. I have never heard Thick played on a 12 string, very big sound that works well for this song.
Wow. What a cover! Congrats on a superb job there!
I came here not expecting much, and you blew me away. Great job on this tricky song.
Sings like an eagle that 12 string🍻
I love the energy and technique into that rendition. Top notch performance! Wavering tempo was actually nice... it made it very real. I'm glad... we're glad you had the camera rolling.
Brilliant. The 12 string is perfect for this gives the sound of the band. The part at 3:00 was particularly well done.
Fantastic Best I have ever heard and on a 12 string! Listened to this album for almost 50 years. TAAB is one of the best records ever cut. Just subbed you. Thank you.
That was perfect
Wonderfully done can not to tell the difference from the original
That looks like Lake Kariba in the background ??
Loch Lomond - Scotland.
I discover this many years later but it's brilliant. Brilliant playing and very faithful to the original, very dynamic too ! It sounds quite differently on 12-string guitar. :o))
this is absolutely beautiful
Loved it , your on fire here
Josh you play it like u had written it, no disrespect to Ian.
Fantastic! It brought me to tears my good friend was a huge Tull fan unfortunately he passed away from cancer. I can’t listen to tull without thinking of him
Had to sign in to leave a comment because I was frankly amazed by the fluency of the guitar playing and the wonderful vocals - an astoundingly brilliant cover. If I am lucky I will have a dream where I play that well! A privilege to watch and listen to.
The pleasure was all mine 👍👍
It is a shame that there is a lot pf talent out there and we do not know about it
Indeed
It's certainly a big old pond to try to make a splash in. Thank you very much for taking the time to watch and comment.

Nicely done. Mighty fine guitar work.
best cover on you tube
Latest update for this re-creation (8 years later) is now on RUclips : The original was recorded around Loch Lomond, Scotland. Recognised as God's own country.... and the birth country of Mr. Ian Anderson...
Very true to the original, even your voice, well done
Solid young man. And on a 12 string
Well done! one of the best covers of this song I've seen.
Thanks Peter, glad you thought so. If you feel inclined, I have a few albums of original music on my channel as well, feel free to check it out.
3:51 when you run out of air so you just put in another beat :D
great cover man, love it!
One of the best renditions I've ever heard. Thank you!
brings back memories
Such a masterful performance on the guitar. Bravo.
Oh man. That was stunning. You played it even better than the original 😂
I'm simply blown away, that was fabulous
A comment just because I have to say something that everyone else has already said.... Amazing!
This performance was most excellent! And playing on a 12 string. Love it!
Yo dude that was great ,I've been a drummer for 40 years and the timing on that song is all over the place, that's how it's meant to sound!,and I'm sure Ian Anderson didn't have a metronome or a click track, lol thought you were lip syncing the first 30 seconds it sounds just like him, cheers!
51 years later I still know the words to this masterpiece by heart. Really nice rendition thank you.
and to think Aqualung was released in 1971 Preceded , Thick as a Brick in 72 🤠 🎵🎶♥ such an Awesome ERA for musical expression,
great guitar playing and a great voice too! incredible the talent thats out there...Kudos!
Excellent great guitar 🎸🎸 super vocals
Great performance, really enjoyed.what amazing guitar playing, awesome.
Thank you👏👏
That was incredible! Well done!
absolutely fantastic 🤩💃🏿🕺🏿💃🏿
That was awesome
Bro!! That gave me goosebumps! Well done!! *bows deeply*
You sir did amazing on this!
Perfectly done sir. Wow ✌️🤙🍀
Great video Josh.
Good cover. You need a better mix, though and better mic placement. Guitar drowned the vocal a few times and you have a good voice. Just need to hear it a little better.
So beautiful! 🌞
watched the water the whole time he actually played that guitar that fast in the solo, fucking great cover!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bravo 👏
Sheesh ........ how good was that ........ brilliant!
I'm standing and clapping...
Why, thank you sir - that means a lot
No Shit! That is very impressive sir.
That was totally AMAZING! and you really have learned the song well unlike myself. Loved it Josh and this really brought back the Magnificent in my book.
Very good, a beautiful execution and a great voice
Thank you for watching. I like a nice Strat, myself. Take care.

Bro. It’s now 2022 and still waiting for you to teach a lesson on your version of this, that is still fantastic.
Outstanding. I didn't want this video to end!!!
Completely superb.
very good job dude, goood guitar, gooood voice, gooood place!
slow it down.... too fast.
Yeah, that's the way it came out. I'm untrained, undisciplined. Play purely emotionally, and I get so into this that I speed it up, it's pure excitement. I've experimented with slowing it down and it sounds way more authentic but I always speed up again. This was 12 years ago. Still meaning to buy a metronome! Thanks for watching and commenting, much appreciated. Have a great day

But this is his interpretation which in my view is stunning
WOW!
I never realized how great of a guitar player Ian A was
Bit fast but nonetheless very nice !!

Great voice, excellent guitar work. Just a bit too quick and the tone has too many treble notes. Otherwise top-notch.
Wonderful, thanks for your music is great hearing and seen you!
I M P R E S I O N A N T E ! ! !
La tocas mejor que el propio Ian !!!
