I actually was burning whole wood chunks down to make charcoal because I ran out and it was a holiday evening. No gas or lighter fluid. That explosion surprised the hell outta me!

You're seriously going to reduce the life of your kamado treating it like this, never take it to temps that high that quickly, max airflow on a kamado is just asking to crack your egg!!
So, this happened 7 years ago and the grill had about 2 years of use on it at the time. I'm happy to report that it still works great and shows no sign of slowing down or cracks for that matter.
