Agreed! Fire treat it and then sharpen. Fire treat and sharpen. Keep repeating till it’s hardened. Or try dunking the piece of wood in a container of wood hardener for a week and the pull it out and let dry. Then sharpen it!
I wonder if against the grain vs with the grain might make a difference as well.

Yeah I knew oak wouldn't do it, but there are absolutely types of wood out there that are denser and harder than even many metals which are used in blade making. Lignum Vitae being your best type of wood most likely since it's the hardest wood known to man. It's so dense it doesn't float in water.

Lignum is about 3 times harder than oak, there are a few other species even harder than that (some kind of australian ironwood is the hardest if memory serves) but lignum is by far the easiest to get hold of. On a side note, if you ever cut down an apple tree in your garden, do yourself a favour and smash the stump out while it's still green. I made the mistake of leaving a big stump for about 10 years and when it came to remove it it was so hard that you could only get a half inch into it before the chainsaw teeth were completely dull and a sharp 8lb axe would just bounce off. Had to burn it out in the end

Or a slow grown pine or spruce. I've seen some 60+ old pines in my life that look like they are just 2 years old due to the low nutrient ground they'v grown in. Dense af with the year rings tighter together than a virgin.
As a beginner woodworker, who specialises in cutlery, guitar picks and tobacco pipes. I think you should have oriented the grain from spine to edge rather than handle to blade I think that wood have made the cutting edge stronger. Thus potentially sharper. But some oil finish like: linseed or sunflower oil wood go a long way to increase strength. Hone the bevel (with a shallow angle), oil it. Then, stone it. But this is just my initial thought. I will try it for myself and edit this comment to tell you my findings. Cool video Tyler. I never hesitate when I see a new video from you.

Soak the wood in a resin bath and put it in a vacuum chamber.
The wood will soak up the resin making it a LOT more rigid, then start the sharpening process.

You should have used Hickory or White oak as they are the hardest/strongest wood you can buy so that the blade won't dull as easily
The whole blade needs to be thinner then it would cut through, as long if it has enough strength.
Unles your spending good money on good wood it it's not happening

Little tip for hardening wood is fire. Hold it over fire until the surface is getting lightly charcoaled (over 180°C). That lets the succrose, wich is inherent in wood, melt and crystalize (like caramell)
It imrpoves the stiffness and density of the wood fibers since it acts like super glue between the fibers.

Lots of spot on comments here in the thread.
1. Thickness. The woods sharpness would have been better had it been at the optimal thickness to structure rigidity. A butter knife was more dull but would have cut through on the swing. Why? Thickness. A butter knife is metal so it can be insanely thin and still have structure.
2. The grain. I learned a long time ago wood grain direction matters A LOT. As someone else said, flip that thing around and you stand a better chance.
3. My favorite. Fire hardening. You wouldn't believe the strength increase. You're going to lose structure flex as the moisture and space in the wood allow it to flex more. You should watch a non fired wooden arrow vs a fired one in slow mo. Same with spears.
I'd say you could match the edge of a trash Walmart knife if you got some extremely hard wood, thin the blade, and fire it. I and everyone else is certain of it
i have to wonder if the direction of the grain of the wood makes a difference in how sharp you can get it as well.
you need to make the blade go further back almost to the back of the wood so that the “blade” is thinner and has possibilities of cutting

You need to make the knife with the grain going the opposite direction. The oak will definitely chip away with the direction it's going. The blade will definitely be stronger the other direction.

You need to flame harden the wood, and sharpen it so the blade edge is perpendicular to the grain.

You should try it with the original cave-man days knife material, stone. Get the right kind of stone anyway and you could probably get it pretty sharp.
can try heat tempering the wood to make it harder before trying to sharpen it. most people I know do this with a blow torch going back and forth on the wood till it's slightly blackened and feels smooth (after it's cooled of course) the wood shrinks slightly when you do this and the fibers inside it bond more tightly together. also a good alternative to resin coating or wood stain to keep it from rotting
Give it another try except sharpen the wood perpendicular to the grain rather than parallel to it like you did this time. That should help it not break off when it gets thin.

You need to use a harder wood, thin the wood out to be like 1/4 as thick, use a higher grit whetstone and wet the whetstone, and then add mineral oil to harden it further.

Brazilian Walnut
Ipe / Lapacho
Cumaru / Brazilian Teak
Ebony
Brazilian Redwood / Paraju
Red Mahogany / Turpentine

the problem with wood vs metal is, the molecules of wood are much bigger than metal. so technically you can only get it as sharp as the molecules are in size. the bigger the molecule, the more surface area there is to absorb energy, which is why wood is hard to keep sharp, where as metal is easy to keep sharp, since the molecules receive less energy.
what you need is called stabilised wood. Its wood thats been vacuum filled with resin and it can be sharpened.

I predict that when the wood is shaped sufficiently enough to be considered a blade, the edge will be so thin and the wood won't be strong enough to support it and it will immediately become flat and dull.
I agree with Tyler, even if you use snake wood, I don’t think it would hold an edge enough to cut effective.

Try it again sharpening AGAINST the grain, not with the grain. Also, fire harden the cutting edge. I do this with primative wood spears I carve. It will never be as sharp as metal but you can still get it it pretty sharp.

reminds me of the time my dad had once carved a piece of wood into the shape of a knife. blade, grip, handguard an all.
it was pretty sharp, for a piece of wood.
Unfortunately it broke because some kid played with it and wanted to make it "even sharper" by just carving away at it until the blade was so small that it just broke off.
I once made a short sword/dagger out of wood. It was quite sharp but it had to be re-sharpened all the time

if you get stabilizing resin and put it in a vaccum then bake it, it wont be as brittle and you can wet sand it with the stones

okay i think having the grains going the other way like lil sharpened serrated teeth might help but you'll loose your edge faster and make the handle more brittle
You should try it again but have the wood grain going 90 degrees the other way and try Duglas fur wood
Use Cocobola or Ebony.. Very dense woods. More expensive than oak, but I think you can swing it... If you want to use oak, stabilize it with like cactus juice or something. It'll still suck as a knife, but you might actually be able to get a semi-usable edge.

@TylerTube try working against the grain and see if it is any more effective. Yes I know that looked like TONS of work. Working the blade against the grain will keep the edge from splicing off, if anything it might splinter.
Wood can get sharp enough to cut through a water bottle. The blade needs to be thinner and the edge needs to be fire hardened.
For future knife videos, I saw something interesting. They put a tomato on a table and sliced the top of it horizontally without holding the tomato with the other hand.

There is a video you should see. It is called "sharpest wood kitchen knife in the world". The guy uses a wood called lignum vitae. Supposedly the heaviest wood. It won't float.

Definitely could use a more dense wood and then heat treat the blade part for extra toughness.
Go a little more thin, the spine is thick, reason it exploded. Try to have the grain running the other direction, this might help you get it more thin on the cutting edge before it breaks off, i think this will be more sharp for cutting things like plastic but would break if used on harder materials.
No disrespect to Tyler at all, I love his content, but he's wrong on this one. The slingshot channel made a pretty damn sharp gladius out of wood, doesn't hold an edge for long, but certainly sharp enough to cut through a water bottle.
He is not a good cutter, with his poor edge alignment he could fail to cut with a truly sharp object.

the grain oak is very fibrous so when you sand it very thin it's just going to splinter you need something a little bit more dense and less fiber on top of that I think 3/4 thick is probably just a bit too thick had you made a little thinner it probably would have come out a little better I'd say use cherry half inch and sanded down from there I work at a cabinet shop and make knives all the time usually decoration but sometimes they're sharp
Maybe if you tried remaking the knife with a harder wood and putting a coat of primer or something so that it holds the edge.

Try ipe it's one of the hardest wood, it burns like steel or concrete.. I bet that would work
should have gone with the grain the other way. The reason this edge wont hold is the same reason those drag-through sharpeners fail - the grain is going the length of the knife instead of a grain that provide structure.
