My mother grew up speaking Spanish - it was her first language - and taught English as a second language and grammar school in both languages. She had zero accent. Salma chose to keep it. I expect it was because she never wanted to hide her culture, but celebrate it and put it at the fore. My mother grew up speaking Spanish - it was her first language - and taught English as a second language and grammar school in both languages. She had zero accent. People had no idea she was bilingual until she chose to let them know. So I know people can shake an accent if they really want to. I'm glad that Salma didnt lose hers.
