  • In Egypt, a new administrative capital is being built in the middle of the desert, about 28 miles away from Cairo. You might think that the Egyptian government embarked on this ambitious multi-billion dollar project for some compelling needs: to lighten the load on the real estate market in the old capital, to reduce pollution and traffic congestion. But what are the real interests involved? And what are the official and unofficial reasons behind such an undertaking? Let's find out.

I am Egyptian and even the pro-government minority that I know are usually against the new capital.
EDIT: unfortunately, contemporary Egyptians have been rendered so helpless that a lot of them try to find whatever good there is in their situation, even if it will lead to their demise ... toxic positivity & false reassurance. There is so little for the modern Egyptian to be proud of, and the media has exploited this by claiming the tallest tower, the grandest mosque, or the largest cathedral to gain the population's support.

Couple that with the current world economic war which made them hike interest even more. This caused a decrease of demand over most currencies in the world and decreased their exchange rate values while putting pressure over prices of grains, energy and metals.
I would agree with you if Egyptian debt to gdp was increasing but it is decreasing steadily, currently a tad lower than the global average of 94%. It’s at 87% of gdp and will drop to 80% in the next 3 years. Indeed post Covid it was expected to drop to less than 70% but again it’s not a domestic reason related to inflation.

1- debt maturity is over 11 years meaning on average it’s 8% of gdp on annual basis.
2- Egyptian gdp is around 10% of Egyptians wealth not like a country as the U.S where the GDP is 25% of the wealth. Meaning that general gross in Egypt makes 0.8% of the wealth on an annual basis and 8% in total.

First of all, we are building 44 new cities from scratch in the desert including 2 big cities the capital that u have discussed and the Alamein city
I can't live in the capital as u mentioned but I took an apartment in new Obour city one of the new cities and at the end of the video u mentioned slums right
In the last five years, gov has destroyed slums and built new buildings instead of it like
    Asmarat city 1,2,3
The city of ghait Al-Anab 1,2
And so on u can make a real search
And the last thing the new capital city doesn't cost any money from gov the whole money comes from investors like the investors are buying landing and the gov take that money and build their buildings so before making a video about a foreign country make sure u deeply understand the whole information and situation by ur own research not imitating other speeches.

I worry, however, that the entire region includibg Egypt does not seem capable of imagining forms of constitutional governance which eschew authoritarianism. I simply do not think that any authoritarian society can ever truly prosper. China is presently an outlier in this, but often overlooked is what it actually feels like to live in a society that lacks basic freedoms. • @mahmoodali5043

    Logical fallacies;
1- "removing the government from cairo reduces the risk of demonstrations"Why? does the Tahrir square get warp-drive space-time-portal moved into an undisclosed location, or did the past revolution succeed because mubarak lived in Tahrir square? how does moving government buildings to a new city prevent people from demonstrating in cairo?
2- poor-shaming the egyptian people: the president promised us saying: They are poor-shaming us, but I won't stay still. Five new neighborhoods were built from scratch in cairo alone to provide decent housing for people who lived in unplanned slums. as of 2020; cairo is free of unsafe slum neighborhoods. that happened before a single person received an apartment in the new capitol. Nice try.. actually it's not even a nice try it's just lazy parrot-copying of the Vox video, but hey try again.
Also, why the hell does urban planning for a new city need to plan for free housing for the poor? do you plan a new city and decide it is going to have a below-poverty linepopulation by default? does each and every single egyptian citizen have to have an apartment in this specific city? do the 110 million egyptians need to leave all other cities and move to a single city with a capacity for 6 million residents? why does building social housing everywhere else in the country not count for you? do you look at any city in the world and judge its success by how many below-poverty line residents it has or by how many middle working-class residents? or is it just because "egypt shouldn't have nice things" is a policy now lol?
3- attracting funds; the capitol already attracted funds. the government did not spend a single penny on building any of the residential areas in the new capitol, all of them are build by local and foreign investors. The government only spent on government buildings, and those made a profit as it sold the old buildings in cairo that occupied business strategic value and sold for much more than building on uncharted sand, so, the country actually made a profit by moving the government and already attracted investment that built and are building residential areas.

building a new city is actually cheaper than fixing cairo. though sisi is trying to do both simultaneously.
