The sound of a future that never was. so cool
The y2k era is depressingly nostalgic.
I agree it's enough to make a grown man cry 😭. I was promised jetpacks but all I got was a fight on Twitter.
@@Sol-Amar I think you put it perfectly.

Jazz transcends time, space, and every genre
This music sounded like the future to me as a kid. The games intertwined with these kind of songs made the whole gaming experience so real and unforgettable.
This. It's so weird how back then when the game was accompanied with this style of music it felt somehow so futuristic and developed. Now looking back it's the sound of gaming nostalgia for me.
@@CloneOhHigh Most of the games were "flawless" by today's standards. The lack of information and interconnectedness made the journey more otherworldly. Because of the internet, nowadays artists are influenced by the same musicians that they are exposed to the most by the (RUclips) algorithm. If you would like to create music you just basically search for "how to make jungle dnb" on RUclips. I think the part of the magic is that we had no idea how these music were made in the 90s.
It still sounds like the future to me it just not the one that we got.
Really makes you feel sad in a good way for the times we had growing up to this right!?
@@Shels_pwnz that's called nostalgia
I think the reason we feel nostalgic for the 90's is because the future still looked like a better place.
Yup: Star Trek was still optimistic, web 1.0 had such great freedom, people werent so dependent on technology, and the technology that did come out might've been less user friendly but more consumer oriented, racism was generally thought to be a thing of the past, people were still able to hold a conversation... you either die a youngster or see yourself become the person praising the good old days...but then again the fact that we were kids with almost no responaibilities and many things went over our heads helped romanticise this era and reminds me of this baudrillard quote: when the real is no longer what it was, nostalgia asumes its full meaning.
@@9an13l Well put. There's hope yet though, people, such as myself, are ditching their smartphones and returning to a flip phone, minimalizing our use of technology that really doesn't make us anymore connected or happy. I tend to romanticize the past, sometimes I get stuck watching old home videos in VHS and listening to such music as this, in moderation it can be nostalgic, often it depresses or embolizes me, making me despise the current, the now, I'm conscious of it though.
@@osiamfilms that is indeed very optimistic, but grasping and accepting the reciprocating influence between quality of content and its effects on the end-consumer, makes me pretty depressed about the ever increasing 1dimensionality and now in 2022 almost non existing impulse control within our younger generations and even peers or a few older people. Never before was it so evident that "we live in a society" , and so diving into stoicism while still being pretty bad at it is one attempt to takle the more personal aspects of living in our futureless endless present...
@@osiamfilms Love the thread here... helps me make sense of all this. I was born in 93 so only briefly got to feel that magic but it was enough, still is enough honestly, to keep me going and trying to make the future better. I work in tech but want to have a bigger impact on this initiative. Seeing convos like this helps keep me driven.
boy were we wrong.
Developers: we just need some music for our sound test screen, nothing too crazy ok?
dreamcast ost composers:
One drum set, a couple bass guitars, and some folk from the Sefton Park Basement project wanting to create a British club music genre. What could be more simple than that?

@@TheSergio1021 The Era.
I currently work in games and this kind of music would be criticized as: "Porn Music" or "Too Trippy" for games. The companies are currently too big and too scared to do anything really cool so when making games, always thinking of the "average" audience and what a 12 year old kid would like. Games like in this playlist were made by people who also enjoyed making it and wanted to put some of themselves in it, especially at the time when you didn't have over 1000s of managers and executives breathing down your back who are also looking to take each other down/ outdo each other when making a game. The result is a very bland, boring, tasteless "product" that has you looking back at these games and wondering "what the hell happened?"
Games are just games, a fun way to pass the time, bond with friends or family, build relationships.
@@sayitjamon6237 What kind of porn are you watching that has music like this ?
all of this music just epitomizes that era so well, the futurism of 1999 was so exciting, technology was advancing so rapidly and our imaginations were just running wild in awe of the possibilities
Somehow, things seemed more advanced despite the fact they were relatively primitive by today's standards. Was it merely the rose tinted goggles of the 90's idealistic outlook on the future to come? A future that did not materialize the way the conceptual artists dreamed. Or was there something more? A missing piece to the puzzle.
@@EskCan44 It was the pace we were moving at, I think. The future is actually here, and it's really not as cool as we thought it would be by now. Still pretty sick though, but the music isn't as LITT as this.

Jungle/DnB still sounds futuristic even though my brain is recognising these sounds as being really old. Maybe because, as others have put it, it sounds like the music of a future that we didn't get? Not to get overly deep but when the optimistic future that Jungle/DnB sounded like didn't happen, it still ends up being the music of a hypothetical future ahead of us.

I also think some trance music had that "future we never got" sound and it just so happened to get very popular around the same era this kind of stuff was around.
I feel like this music gave way to the lofi house music mixes we see today.
Perhaps it was music of the future we were living in at the time?

Man.... I so miss this era, everything from music, games, hobbies, toys, shopping, limited internet, magazines, shows/movies. All this before internet and cell phones blew up for the public. I so miss those times.
simpler times for sure
soon youll miss these times! it only gets worse from here. in 2035 youll be saying the exact same thing about the early 2020's
Fun fact: this genre got extremely popular during the PS1 and Dreamcast era because it was impossible to make on the sound chips of older 16-bit systems. With the ability to create full audio files, composers saw it as an opportunity to show off the extreme end of what these systems were capable of.
@Vice'sDelusion all the games featured in this! Jet Set, Gran Turismo, etc.
This genre was already popular at the time because of the rave scene. That's why it got into video games
@@atetraxx I would argue it's both! Jungle was the perfect way to flex the muscle of the new sound chips while also drawing in a niche-yet-booming audience
@@Brando2301 좋은 접근입니다. 80-90 era 게임음악이 YAMAHA CHIPSET SOUND를 많이 쓴것처럼 그런 부분이 분명히 존재합니다
An interesting thought. In a similar vein, I've long thought that game music from the 8 and 16 bit eras was so damn epic and catchy, was because the composers were so limited, so they really had to work their asses off and made something special

I listen to this and grab my old videogame magazines, reading them with this on is a time capsule
I used to buy OPSM (Official PlayStation Magazine) here in the UK.
Every issue came with a demo disk. There was even one for metal gear solid 1 which I played the fu*k out of.
It cost £5 so my Sunday morning paper round took care of that. In hindsight it was a miserable rate of pay but I didn’t care 😄
Fun fact for the section of Foregone Destruction at 29:23 - the uncanny '3-dimensional' sound of the drums is created by taking a mono drum sample, splitting it into identical left and right channels, and then phase-inverting one of those 2 channels. You can always check if this effect was used by listening with Mono audio on your device. The sample will basically disappear since the left and right channel neutralize each other.
so that's why it always sounded different through a phone speaker! what an interesting idea, very slick
That's really cool. I've always wondered why it sounded crispy-like.
100% right. it sounds amazing
amazing comment
Wow that is a fun fact
I'm so glad this genre is making a comeback, this stuff was the sound of my childhood. Sega games especially had some really good Jungle/DnB music.
Oh mate brilliant call! As a kid in Australia in the early 90s we didn't get many dnb cds imported in the shops. The world before fast internet lol. so often i would find this beaut music in games... before i even knew there was music called jungle lol. Thanks for all your work mate! You pt joy in my days!
That's nuts man! Thanks for sharing the memories. Enjoy mate
Hahaha - I would hear a song in a film and if it wasn't labelled (some skate/FMX/surf videos had track labels appear) the best I could try was to hum it to people who I thought might know.
@@a_changedworld oh yeah tried that too
Same here man, but also with techno, trance, ambient
I remember drumming the amen break on my chest for years, trying to find out what it was, asking everyone...no one knew!!! Lmao
The way that this music meshes so well with some of the artistic direction in these games is just mind blowing. When you look at the artwork even in this video of the covers it all just makes sense to be accompanied by the music. They don’t make artistic games like this no more. Now it’s just who has the prettiest looking games and we’ll put OSTs with generic electronic pop or ambient nature-y stuff. When gaming had this beautiful cross section of techno, hip hop, jazz & undertones of rock it was amazing. It felt like the future. Only game that immediately comes to mind that still makes sure to have great art in terms of visually and music is Persona. ARTISTIC does NOT equate to looking PRETTY/VISUALLY STUNNING and I wish more game studios were still aware of this difference. Bring back the Future Grunge, this is the best way I could describe this nuance of games and art direction
Future Grunge... that notion reminds me of Titan A.E.
i know what you mean sometimes i go back to the final fantasy 4 ost just to escape into a magic world where i can fly freely
Imo Cyberpunk is literally one of my top favorite games rn because of all of the music it incorporates and with the right mods it plays almost perfect any time.
ape escape...
Nostalgia aside, but the y2k era was a time of general optimism, the cold war was over, global trade of goods, services and ideas was booming, no more geopolitical fronts, an explosion of creativity, we were living the next technological revolution, literally everyone - from artists, environmentalists, to businessmen - had hopes that the new millennium will treasure opportunities for all. Then 9/11 happened, and the rest is history.

Music of Dreamscapes.
Foregone Destruction, i'd loop that for hours when I was a kid. Good times.
Ikr? Probably my favorite DnB song of all time
Highly recommend "Killing Moon" (Akuma's Theme) and "Twilight" (Ibuki's Theme) from Street Fighter 3S, off the top of my head. Honestly, there's so much insane DnB in this era of gaming that it's a shame we don't see more of it anymore. "Foregone Destruction" was the track that made me realize I loved Jungle as a teenager.
I didn't know that those tracks fell under that genre. I always thought they were Acid jazz, and called it such for some time but if it is actually called DnB, then I know where to find more tracks that sound like the Street Fighter 3rd Strike Soundtrack. Do you have any recommendations for more places to find this vintage sound, or tracks that sound like Akuma's or Ibuki's themes?

Gill's theme in 3rd strike is my personal fave
reminds me of all the excitement that existed in the gaming industry. Tv shows, magazines and events made me so optimistic about the future of gaming. Little did I know, we were already at the top of the mountain. Nice mix!

Welcome to the jungle.
The Unreal Tournament tracks are so good man
Listening to this, I get a sense of warmth and sadness. The fact we lived through an amazing period in time and this era was arguably the peak of where everyone was care free and had next to no troubles, but also how we can never go back to do it all again and we are day by day getting further away from it. The nineties had it all, what I’d do to go back and appreciate it properly.
Maybe in USA, my country in 90s was everything but amazing
@@dzimikes It's good to have comments like this. The 90s were amazing in the West (peak of rave/DnB music, economic boom, global travel) but it's sobering to know it wasn't like that for everyone.

Crazy how much the games I played as a kid unknowingly influenced my taste in music
Been spiraling into myself lately, finding connections to what I like now and what I did as a kid. This music has my soul as of now and I come to this and see Jet Set Radio at first. The game I fell in love with as a child and it makes sense why this music feels so close to home.
