Chris I love what you do, and certainly jealous of your shop. I’m 64 years old (retired) and I’m in process of building my workshop. Current building is 40’x60’x16’ , in which I am building a 18x30 shop area. I keep coming to your videos for inspiration and guidance. I am an absolute beginner and have a long time to go before I tackle something high end. But with your great content I hope to learn from you while doing the buildout of the shop itself. Thank you for what you do!

I did the same thing for spacing my French cleats on the wall, except I made hangers for spacing and started from the top down. Several reasons for that. One, the floor in my garage is not level, but the ceiling is. So my highest French cleat is 12" _down_ from the ceiling rather than some inches up from the floor, and everything else was indexed off that. Second, I cut 8' long French cleats to go on the wall; hanging them from above rather than balancing them on spacers below meant I didn't have to worry about a precariously balanced 8 foot long plywood noodle falling off the spacers before I could get the screws in. I used bolts for the bottom part of the spacer-hangers: I could fine adjust the height that way, and also back off the bolts to get the spacers off after the cleat was screwed down.

I lived in my Dad’s shop growing up. It’s the source of some of my best memories. And now, after the passing of both my parents, I’ve moved back and the workshop is mine. I tear up nearly every time I am there. I need to make big changes (a lot has accumulated over 35 years), but I am afraid of losing the bond. Well, it’s a winter project....

Chris I was thinking about the kids room using the cleats that could be a game changer on keeping their rooms organized you can put a cleat system add a desk on a cleat at one height when they are little and move it up as they grow. No boundaries with the cleat.

If you make the shelves upsidedown then the sides will keep the stuff from falling off. A cut curving the supports will make it look better.

MODULAR! I love modular stuff. Storage that you can reconfigure is always the most versatile, especially if it can be made portable.
"Ugh, I really need to clean up that mess...." has been the motivation behind more shop builds than every other sentiment combined.
I am a little surprised that you didn't make the side brackets triangles instead of squares. Seems like they might get in the way of shelves below.
However, since you did leave them square, your comment about adding a secondary shelf to each unit is certainly true, but you could also add a dowel to the lower corner for tapes, clamps, or even rolls of brown paper. They'd also make nice hanging drying racks for smaller work pieces after painting or staining.

The story stick is how I did my wall. Mine was a little different, as I had it index to the top of each cleat, rather than spacing to the bottom. (in case the cleats were not quite exactly the same height.) I also started at the top and hung the new cleat from the pair of story sticks (a small spring clamp or pin nail to hold it in place.) while I screwed them in place.

I like this design for shelf units on a French Cleat wall. My shop is smaller so I made 4 of these 18" long. Mine are dual shelves like you suggested at the end and I made the lower shelf 3/4" wider to act as the lower support thus eliminating the need for a back piece (less plywood). So it's the same as yours but different hahaha. Yours inspired mine so thanks!

    Hi from the UK :)
I would have been tempted to cut the corner of the end shelf supports at 45% (like you did on your wife's) - It just gives that quality finish without affecting the strength. Also I know modern adhesives are great, but I'd still put a few screws in the cleats (especially if the shelves will carry some weight). Great channel BTW :D

I did show a small segment of me putting screws in the cleats. I agree with you modern adhesives are great but..mechanical fasteners for the win
