Nice video. That leather band thingy is the sweat band... just FYI... another way to do this is to get a spray bottle with water (I use distilled) and spritz the inside and outside of the band area... then place in a warm car or similar area for 15-30 minutes (depending on the temperature) and that can shrink down your hat considerably without the use of the foam tape. Once you have done that, invest in a hat jack/hat stretcher to help keep the shape (helps to keep shape and stretch as needed).
Nice video. Your dad's hat is very similar to a Stetson Stampede model in acorn tan color I bought in SF in the early '80's. Mine has the same headband with the JBS lasso pin but is only a 3X. Baron Hats in LA recently restored mine with a new sweatband but kept intact the Stetson liner depicting the cowboy giving water to his horse. These hats are definitely a keeper for the family.
I bought $350 Stetson beaver hat and additionally I bought another $120 genuine zebra hat band! Turns out the hat was an 8th inch too big! I was aware of the “foam “ But not knowledgeable on how to apply it! Thought it went on the outside of the leather sweat band! 😆 Thanks to your video I will now purchase the foam and apply it properly, along with a Terry cloth sweat band and it will once again be perfection better than new! Thank you very much for taking the time to make this very Informative video!
YOU'RE A LIFE SAVER!!! I bought a Stetson Marshal hat and got the wrong size 7 1/2 which is -23 3/4 which is a 60 X Large When I was supposed to get a 7 which is 22 1/4 - which is a 56 medium
As a cowboy hat enthusiast, you scored a hat that, not only looks great on you but, is in excellent condition! And, as icing on the cake, it's a hand-me-down. Maybe someday you'll find a pic of your Dad wearing it! ❤🙏
From France : congratulations ! Good idea, wonderful hat, it fits you perfectly. Your style, smile and haircut make a unique genre with this hat. I try to to find cowboy hats in France but real ones are difficult to find. So i find it on the internet in the US and import ones, time to time. Hard to find the perfect sharp i love with the distance. Resistol at Stetson are my favorites, straw hats or "fedora". The ones i used to see the in Dallas( tv show) were amazing : Steve Kanally's, Larry Hagman's of course, patrick Duffy's... hard to find vintage ones
I wear australian felt hats and I use cork strips for making it smaller and better fitting. They're to be put in the exact same spot as the foam thing used in video, the only difference is that it is not glued on, and one can put there one or several of them depending on the size one wants to achieve.
Sadly. Stetson no longer makes a felt hat with a 3 1/2" brim. It's the best size, in my opinion. My hat brim is 3 1/2, but my hat is an old Stetson like yours. That brim size was popular in the 1960s and 70s.
You might get the tape at a hardware store also ( used for weatherstriping ). It is BRILLIANT, I couldn't see the trees for I was looking the the forest! My daughter got me a hat when she was little but it was too big. This might be the solution. 👍

I think that might be the Stetson bandit edition hat they made in 1977 after the movie Smokey and the bandit came out

Does this damage the hat over time? Do you know?
I only know that is hasn't damaged my hat at all. I did use a product specifically made for hats.

What color did Stetson label that hat
In checking the label I don't see anything that states a color. It says 4 X Beaver and XXXX Stetson. It's a light olive green color.

Antique is anything more than 100 years old. Vintage is considered anything more than 20 years old.

Yep. Anything 20 years or older is considered vintage - 100 years old is antique.
