4 years after the promise took place, here is the much requested impressions turorial. In this series I will teach you the theory that I have developed around learning impressions followed by a how to guide that gives you my process. Impressions / impersonations such as Morgan Freeman from the Shawshank Redemption, Gandalf from Lord of the RIngs and Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad.
Charlie Hopkinson is a comedic impressionist who specialises in voices from current television shows and films.
He started learning impressions in 2012, at the age of 20.
After graduating from the University of Warwick in the summer 2013 he took 4 months out to concentrate on RUclips videos full time, including producing his most viewed video to date ‘Morgan Freeman and 40 other impressions’ with just over 9 million views. This foray into being a ‘full time RUclipsr’ was cut short as he went travelling for 3 months before starting a 2 year teaching Graduate scheme with Charity ‘Teach First’
While teaching he has performed in and narrated the 4 episode series ‘Lookalikes’ as Morgan Freeman. The show and the narration received a positive reception. The show aired on Channel 4 during the prime time slot of Friday 10pm for three weeks. Charlie also performed with other well known impressionists for an unaired pilot.
Charlie has worked for several prominent brands in relation to their products, including google and formula 1.
Since the summer of 2016 Charlie has once again dived into the world of RUclips, for the first time producing content on a weekly basis. He is also focusing on live performance; he has performed in live venues a total of 3 times to date.
His top impressions include:
Morgan Freeman (Red -Shawshank redemption)
Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf - Lord of the Rings)
Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman - Breaking Bad)
Alan Rickman (Snape - Harry Potter)
Michael Caine (Alfred - Batman)
Jon Snow (Game of Thrones)
Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Carribean)
Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained, Inglorious bastards)
Alec Guiness (Ben Kenobi - Star Wars)
Agent Smith (The Matrix)
Sean Bean (Boromir - Lord of the Rings)
Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield - The Hobbit)
Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister - Game of Thrones)
Tyrion Lannister (Game of Thrones)
Bryan Cranston (Walter White - Breaking Bad)
Frank Underwood (House of Cards)

"You want to be a professional impressionist."
no. i just want to make my dungeons and dragons experience as the dungeon master so much more enjoyable for me and everyone else XD
I wanna voice troll and make my friends laugh without cringe moments.
I need all the skills needed to make a cartoon show almost all on my own.. '3'
Jack of all trades master of none, is often better than master of one..
same, found any cool sources since then?
Lol. Literally same.
Fuck me, first comment I read about voice impressions and I'm already called out.
A series promised 4 years ago, finally starting to deliver... what specific impression tutorials would you like?
Your impressions are awesome! Excited for your new series. Keep up the great work.
personally I’d love tutorials on all of them ;) - but specifically, I’d love Jesse Pinkman, Walter White, and Morgan Freeman 😊
btw, thanks for being such a great guy Charlie !!
Jack sparrow
Nothing specific as of now. But in general how to get a better vocal range or some exercise for vocal cords. Thanks for being awesome
Hey man, awesome work! I've been trying to do a proper Alfie Solomons for two years now, yet my best friend always tells me I'm terrible... Help me shut him up :D
As someone who struggles endlessly to get those deep notes in Morgan's voice.. I am amazed by how much of that deep saxaphone resonance you have actually subtracted from your impression of him over the years.

Imagine your math teacher comes in and introduces himself with Morgan Freeman's voice
So What!!
"Oh nice vocal cords where'd you find them"
Best part of the entire video tbh hahaha
Fr lmao
Great series, I don’t aspire to be a professional it is just a cool skill to have like playing the guitar... also a great icebreaker for conversations and is great and easy entertainment for friends and family (and myself)
A great attitude to have!
i can't remember the last time i clicked on a youtube video and actually enjoyed it. this made me smile.
What helps me do voice impressions is that I observe the voice and listen to it until I can replicate that voice. Once I did a classmates voice by accident when I was 7 since I heard it so much.
Thanks, bro. I been growing in this game for a few months now, I am deeply enjoy it! Enjoying your lessons I will add them to my utility belt. I appreciated the fact that you shared some of the vocal recording equipment. Now yours truly will to invest in my own equipment. Deeply enjoying your work you're a true source of inspiration keep up the excellent work my friend.
No problem, and thanks, will keep making these!
So if I record my normal speaking voice, how it sounds on the playback is what everyone else hears.
Pretty much
Depending on the microphone you use it might not be exactly what others here
Yeah man it sounds like shit
I'd like to think that my voice on a high quality microphone is more what I sound like than on my cellular phone's recordings as they sound...awful.
@@CharlieHopkinson or at least more accurate than trying to listen to yourself live.
I just want to learn Heath Ledgers Joker voice. Yes, I’m in quarantine.

When he did that Jesse Pinkman impression, I felt the strongest urge in my entire life to burn someone as a witch.
Thanks so much for this series!!!!’ You are the best impressionist on youtube, only an expert can teach their expertise to others ☺️ such as yourself ☺️
My sister:*hears the crunch of an apple and a distorted hello in a deep weird Morgan Freeman voice*
I watched this entire video, which I would otherwise not do, because it’s both informative and entertaining. Good job, Charlie. 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks Mal, look out for the next ones!
I think about how our own voices develop, from the manner we speak and our accent. It changes over time. I think it's the same with impressions. You begin to talk like the one you're impersonating and over time your vocal cords can adapt and work just like theirs does.
Oh no I'm going to start cawing and growling like a jurrassic park raptor now...oh no
I got a load of impressions (peridot, nejire, toga, draculaura, Mickey Mouse, probably a few more)
I’m here to attempt a males voice (ryo from dmcb)
whey 🤪
kat lulu lol haha
I' m a girl and I can make a better Mickey impression then a Minney
I know how to do a dora impression but i also wanna learn a lot of south park voices lol
lmao nejire from my hero academia? i love her voice
I love this! You can apply this to anything you want to learn and master.
I like the spectacles. I think I have the same ones. Krewe, made in New Orleans. They look great on my child-size head.
Haha thanks!

All the time in the world to learn this amazing skill while self isolating! More videos please!

That’s funny because I don’t want friends

I rly like his humour and the way the video is edited it rly made the video enjoyable and easy to watch. One of the best RUclips videos I've seen in months 🔥
Thanks Tom!
Your natural voice is so soothing
This guy can spit some truth! Thanks for your honesty :)
Liberating and inspirational...I have always loved to do impression. I think am inspired to dive NOW.
Thanks for the vid. Ever since I saw impressionists on Britain's Got Talent and America's Got Talent I wanted to do the same
I’ve heard many impressions, but none quite like yours.. keep up the good work.👍
Thanks!
I want to learn this for fun. And it might be useful since I take acting classes.
I've seen videos of people whose voices can change so drastically they can do flawless impressions of women as well. As someone who often plays female characters in DnD, it's something I'd like to be able to try, if you can teach it.
That may be a struggle
@@CharlieHopkinson Ah, it's okay. No need to do so if you don't want to. There's plenty of other resources out there, I'm sure.
You're good, but can you do Charlie Hopkinson?
Only one way to find out...
You could branch out and do skits and stuff because you have a great sense of humour. Stay motivated and keep on mate, you're onto something big.
Thanks very much, I’m currently crafting a straight comedy RUclips channel for sketches so look out for that
I mostly want to learn impressions so I can freak my friends out, for VR chat, and me messing around. And it looks fun
the fact hes still replying to comments proves this dudes a legend
iv been doing stitch and Gollum since primary school and i just want to improve
I love the small animations the one in the shower cracked me up haha
I love that David Mitchell impression you do for the entire video 👌🏻 😂
I just clicked back on your very first upload of the Warwick darts society Morgan Freeman impression... and it was nice to be able to hear that you weren't simply born with a Morgan freeman switch on the back of your head.... and now I am even more excited for part 2 of the tutorial.
Yep, and that was after 2 years!
.. 2 years....... looking back, is that unavoidably how long it took for the framework of skill to build or do you now see mistakes (or missing elements) that significantly slowed you down?
yeah, but that comes with experience, the gift of hindsight...
Seeing this i remember seeing a tv variety show bit in the late 60’s early 70’s forget who it was but he demonstrated difference between impersonator and impressionist. I came here cause I was intrigued listening to Larry Storch voice Phineas J Whoopee in Tennessee Tuxedo impressioning Frank Morgan.
What is the difference?
Charlie Hopkinson as I recall is was a matter of degree, and emphasis on personal quirks to get laughs. An impersonator could “do” Burt Lancaster; an impressionist will “out Burt Lancaster” Burt Lancaster. I’m sure there’s overlap. Rich Little as Nixon could be either I guess but that’s Nixon.
Really like your video.
Voicemod may be a voice changer but it has a hear myself feature where it sends microphone input into your headphones
Lmao! You are adorably funny! Love this video
I'm just a simple GM trying to navigate his way through the Galaxy. Thanks for the tips!
Well voice impressions and I go a long way back like 17years back. ( 17 years old now ) Now I'm ready to up my game from cartoons, movie characters, etc, to actual people in real life. You are the guy for the job so... Let's get it on.
Thank you for putting this together ; you're very funny!
Thanks!
@@CharlieHopkinson Curious to know if you think/know about women who can do lots of male impersonations? Feels like that is very limiting as a woman but would love some inspiration! Thanks
@@getoutandshoot8496 Hey, every impressionist/vo artist is limited by their vocal range, so if trying to replicate men, most likely you would find it difficult to do anything beyond the higher pitched ones
@@CharlieHopkinson Thanks!
i can do one guy who goes oh no's
in family guy
Same my guy and voice is deep but still can’t do shit 😒
You are a rare case of someone who devolved a skill to a very high level being fully aware of the fact that has nothing to do with so called talent. Kudos!
Dude pissing my family off is the best part 😂😂
I would like to learn more about how to learn and develop Morgan Freeman and maybe Nicholas Cage but M Freeman is my main focus.
I am about 60% there.
Thanks
Steve Zook
Totally agree.
The most important word you'd have in your arsenal is "apparently".
As a guitarist and wannabe singer, emmulation is key.
I can't for the life of me do an early Michael Caine but later maybe. I don't do Sean Connery because he's dead and the new Gen don't know him.
Plus he's "noh Spanish, he's Egyptian."
People like my "Trump" but he's not gonna be around the sooner the better so...
I've been tryin out my Ohper Christ Lee since hearing you but I can't quite get the lower resonance.
It comes from the mid throat and doesn't quite get the push of the diagphram.
You've given me much joy, sir. Thanks!
You're brilliant.
I’ve always had fun doing impressions and people always tell me I’m really good. I never believed it but now after a good amount of practice. I think I can start doing some more voices that are more out of the box for me.
I don't regret clicking this video I am learning So much 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
Some voices I can pick up and mimic immediately, some take time, and some are just impossible for me to even gain a basic grasp on.
Been doing impressions for a while now never too late to learn new voices or techniques. I've always been interested in voice acting and impressions.
"Practise". But seriously, this is amazing! Thank you for the video.
Douglas Renholm's voice on the it crowd is my current goal
Is that Matt Berry?
@@CharlieHopkinson yeah, jeez that was fast
Perfect. I won't sound weird while talking to myself now.
yaaay oh man, this is already looking well organized.
As for impressions i would recommend starting off with one that isn't a lower voice like morgan freeman or something too high, rather a pitch most people will find it easier to get to - to start off with - as then it's one fewer task we have to do.
Maybe even Jesse Pinkman? If you feel it is one of your stronger impressions, which I think it is. Someone of that pitch, not too low or too high.
Thanks! And good thinking
Excellent video. Good growth mindset going on!
Love your Jessie Pinkman impression
I wanna do video game character impressions mainly overwatch and mario, idk a lot of voices I wanna do are male and in a girl so idk if itll work
The whole your voice sounds different to you thing is something I've known about for a while. But something I have never realized is what that means for impressionists. You get to hear what Morgan Freeman hears when he speaks. That seems so strange to me.
"you want to be a professional impressionist."
nah, I just want to troll my friends with anime voices lol
I been a vocalist for a couple years now and I noticed one thing. You got to shut off your brain as you do this. It's in the connection of the breath and allowing whatever to happen, happen without resisting.
please make more harry p characters impressions
Noted!
Yayyyy ♡
My brother could naturally do a really good Quagmire and Eric Cartman impression growing up and I used to be jealous of him for it 🤣😂
This was very helpful! Thank you!!!
You’re welcome!
My friends and I sit and have conversations with impressions, and my family always said that I have a good talent. So I’m good from that part😂. But there are impressions that I know I can do more but I always thought it’s based on someone’s voice of how low or high they can go. So I guess it’s really matter of muscle memory and practice and not just vocals …
Your " acting" impression! 😅 Is the Yeti a good Mike to stay with, and is it a USB plug in one?
It is yeah, my second mic
Yeah I’ve got the yeti too, decent mic. USB to mini USB cable, and fits on stands.
I will say, I am auditory dyslexic. So, I have to overly process when people speak just so I can understand them.
So, sometimes the ability comes through struggle. It's often easier in my brain to recite a line by mimicking the voice and cadence of who I heard it from.
Obviously has caused work related issues where I mimic my boss, back to my boss to confirm what he said... lol
I loved watching this video, it was very funny
Thanks! I do try!
I’m trying to do impressions like Yagami Yago so I can freak people out talking in the voice of the character I am at cons. Also messing with my friends.
That was such an honest and helpful video. Thank you for sharing this!
I want to hear your best Charleston White impersonations.😂
Good tips and orientation like information

Sorry I didn't want to put you on blast or make an ass out of myself so I made this reply thread but anyways I was just going to say if you aren't already please start eqing your audio in your future videos..
