The Apocrifal incident where the Sonar attack Starbase 40 over Baku is actually a mission in Star Trek Armada duriung the federation campaign. That was a fun game.
The Ba'ku can be lucky to have found their planet. Too much or the wrong kind of metaphasic radiation might have mutated them into cancer blobs. I suspect this could be also why metaphasic radiation as medical treatment is not widespread.
You may or may not be aware of it, but there is a huge Star Trek fan film series, multiple seasons and multiple spin off series, that takes place in and around the briar patch. it is called Star Trek Hidden Frontier... here is the order of them: - "Star Trek: Hidden Frontier" original series, centered on USS Excelsior and Deep Space 12 - "Star Trek: Odyssey" sequel series, centered on USS Odyssey - "Star Trek: Helena Chronicles" sequel series, centered on USS Helena - "Star Trek: Federation One" sequel series - "Star Trek: Voyages of the U.S.S. Angeles" prequel series, centered on USS Angeles Considering they were all fan made and low budget and some time back, the quality is not bad for the time, but is not super great by 2024 standards. Still a very enjoyable viewing. The episodes were mostly on the shorter side, especially the early seasons... but interesting. I think there was another series made by some of the same people, but was not directly connected... Star Trek Intrepid, do not know as much about that series though.
The writing in a first few seasons of Hidden Frontier was pretty woeful IIRC, but improved season by season, its latter seasons were, frankly, incredible.
That planet is the best planet in the federation's territory, even beyond Earth the restorative powers of that planet's atmosphere would be perfect to retire after 20 or 30 years of service in Starfleet
There is no way a Quasar can exist in the Briar Patch. The radiation would render surrounding solar systems uninhabitable. When I say surrounding, I mean hundreds of thousands of light years at bare minimum.
Yeah, they probably meant a quasi-star, neutron star, or low mass black hole. Quasars are among the sort of elements that could form a galactic core, powered by particularly energetic supermassive black holes, not small at all. Makes a whole galactic neighborhood a bit of a rough area, not just a tiny fluff patch.
It may have been fortunate that the Augments, under new leadership🗡, decided to forgo sanctuary and hiding and instead made themselves known and then killed. If they were in a region where cellular regeneration occurred, they could have become even more formidable with no aging and 'all the time in the world'. Imagine Augments with a century of training but still youthful then going out into the Galaxy (they naturally have twice the regular Human lifespan, but it's still a power up). The Augments must have had access to extensive training materials as evidenced by their wide ranging skill sets, from advanced martial arts to computer hacking, various sciences and technical fields, and operating a warship. And what if they had reproduced? They could keep their little colony a hidden base and gone out, done some 'mischief' and then returned occasionally to recharge their youth. With their intellects, they could work out the specifics of the radiation and its effects.
I like to think the briar patch has a lensesing effect allowing you to study the local space of the other galaxy from here. That would be a treasure worth fighting over :D
Why hasn't the Federation set up a bunch of high capacity Spacestations with Spas in the Briar Patch? Holidays there can be part of a package deal with a Risa visit.
Why would anyone want to holiday on a space station in a dense cloud? It's the Ba'ku planet that provides the healing, and admission to that planet is up to the Ba'ku.
Probably because the special planetary rings that trigger the regenerative effect are only on the Ba'ku homeworld, and the whole point of the movie was how forcefully colonizing their world to take advantage of said regenerative effects for the benefit of the Federation was wrong.
Quasars? Aren't quasars active (feeding) galactic cores? How can a local patch of space inside a galactic sector contain two of them, and not being the actual core of that galaxy?
"There's some kind of ..." IF there was ever a reason to have a Puppet/ marionette planet where things were a little bonkers. They'd have to kidnap Crusher and Worf.
Geordi had ocular implants, which completely replaced his organic eyes, so for him to be able to see, those organic eyeballs would have had to grow at record speed in just a few days, which I seriously doubt the belt's radiation was capable of, but like most trekkies, I'm willing to handwave it
@jacara1981 I know, I accidentally sent an incomplete message before I could change the autocorrect (Geordie is the slang term for people from Newcastle) that paragraph you see above your reply was what I meant to send, it was definitely nothing to do with spelling
A version of this has already happened. Honda and GM got caught selling vehicle data to data brokers who sell speed vehicle telemetry including speed to insurance companies who then skyrocket drivers rates. Privacy is effectively dead.
Wouldn't there be loads of exploration to see if any other planets in the patch have similar healing effects? That would be quite the plot for a series or at least book.
Maybe Another planet that is the complete opposite. Constantly about to die but gets just enough healing effects to exist and keep the region balanced.
Probably not. The chance of a second planet being capable of a similar effect and also being in the patch are fairly low. The patch is also well mapped at this point.
Convinced he-who-used-to-be-Rick has never actually watched most of this media. Why? The Admiral's name is not DOG-er-ty, but DOW-ur-tee. His name is said several times, 3 or 4 by himself.

[Just like the research team that extensively studied the anomaly that turned Picard, Ro, Keiko, and Guinan into Tweens. That was an amazing accident. A detailed research of the phenomenon was, of course, the appropriate response. Yeah. I think its an Irish name and Rick is clearly English. I think the correct pronunciation is closer to "DOH-re-ty". ETA: internet says its both Irish and Scottish. Derived from Gaelic.
I'm Irish and can confirm it's pronounced DOH-er-ty. It just feels wrong when non Irish say it differently with their accents and the way they read names.
I can tell by your pronunciation of "Admiral Dougherty" that you have never actually watched Star Trek Insurrection. ....Which, I suppose, is fair, because it is one of the skippable ones.

@@markrtoffeeman Yes, iirc the nearest quasar is a few galaxies away.

The map you are showing has the patch in the Beta Quadrant not Alpha which makes more since with it being near Klingon space.
Each time I heard the name Briar Patch, it reminded me of the "Riker Maneuver"

A nebula can't contain a quasar. Did you mean pulsar?
It can't contain a galactic cluster either. Not Ric's fault the _Trek_ writers don't always care enough to bring in a science consultant to copyedit.

In the Insurrection the character's name was pronounced Dowerty.
Doherty was not the films pronunciation. He was called Dowerty in Insurrection.
I have always hated the name of this area of space in Star Trek... just like the Badlands.. both were lame
