    Meanwhile in New Zealand, we have just had our elections, based from the people that voted. Personally I have never understood why electoral college has such a large influence in US politics.

      @MaggiDaC 4 года назад +23

    • @lu881

      It has to do with how the U.S. was founded

    • @Ngamotu83
      @Ngamotu83 4 года назад +14

      The difference is that in New Zealand we vote for who we want to represent us in parliament. We vote for neither the head of state (the monarch) nor the head of government (the Prime Minister). The latter of those two is instead determined by the party leader who is able to command the confidence of the greatest number of members of parliament.
      By contrast, in the United States they try to use democratic elections to select one person to act as head of both state and government. However, the joke is on the American people, because democratically electing the head of state can't be done. No matter what system you use, you will always end up with a President who does not represent at least half the people. The Electoral College is simple a system that in its antiquated state, is now exploited to produce a President who represents as few people as possible.
      Truth be told, the original reason for the Electoral College was geography. It was born out of the need to gradually deliver election results from each state to the nation's capital. But modern communications technology more or less renders the Electoral College redundant.

    I'm a Libertarian. But opposed to democracy. The United States was not made as a democracy. But a constitutional republic. A democracy is when 2 wolves and a sheep vote on what's for dinner. The constitution protects the rights of that sheep from the majority wolves. While the founding fathers didn't follow this as written, it was eventually what ended slavery and the Civil rights movement. It is what hopefully keeps authoritarian socialist Democrats and fascist Republicans from becoming too powerful and losing our liberties. Unfortunately, both parties have forgotten the constitution. Freedoms are being taken away in different ways depending on which party is in the majority. Neither does anything to shink the size of government. Republicans make our military and police bigger. Democrats increase the citizens dependency on government to take care of our problems. More dependency on government leads to less liberty. More power to police lead to less liberty. Enforcement of vaccines....well you get the point.

Well, except for all the people working in the petroleum industries or have any jobs related to internal combustion engines. You see, the problem with Special Interests is that they are like Lagging Indicators. The PAST is what made people rich. the Future hasn't paid out anything to anybody yet. So Democracy is inherently always behind the times. In our troubled World now, Democracy is only going to be another hurdle, another road block. We need Government by career civil service.

    In majority of european countries you need valid photo id , even in unrecognized countries like Transnistria , Luhansk People's Republic , Donetsk People's Republic. 2) When you register in your Municipality ( in Netherlands) , your passport will be scanned en saved in Government database. so municapilty knows your citizenship and immigration status 3 ) when you need residency permit , you biometrics (passport photo, fingerprints and signature , sometimes iris scan )will be taken from you. As wikipedia states en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voter_Identification_laws#Netherlands : The registration office of each municipality in the Netherlands maintains a registration of all residents. Every eligible voter receives a personal polling notification by mail some weeks before the election, indicating the polling station of the voter's precinct. Voters must present their polling notification and a piece of photo ID (passport, identity card, or drivers license (a passport or ID is compulsory from the age of 14)). Such photo ID may be expired but not by more than five years.

  • @kiwifruitkl

    Some Pointers:
    - The Republican and Democratic parties are equally capable of gerrymandering, selecting voters instead of having voters selecting representatives.
    - White people in the United States may be declining in number and overall fecundity, but they still hold the majority vote in this country. Attitudes, of course, may be changing, as the younger generation of people tend to be more liberal/progressive and possibly even poorer than the previous generation. It may take maybe another generation or so for whites to become the minority in the country, and even then, they will be a substantial minority.
    - Just because one is an ethnic minority doesn't mean one won't vote for the Republican party. Hispanics/Latinos come from Roman Catholic countries, and Arabs come from Islamic countries. They may actually be more conservative than the non-Hispanic white voting group, especially the immigrant naturalized citizen generation.
    - Most societies in the world, throughout history, have been ruled by the wealthy and powerful elite. Wealthy people can afford better education than their poorer counterparts, so it makes sense that they should rule over others. I don't want a peasant farmer who only knows how to farm and collect animal dung to be the next ruler; that's like inciting a Communist revolution... and we all know how that went for China. Though, I am aware that the Ming dynasty was founded by a peasant farmer. Ah, well. If poor and disadvantaged want power, then they have to fight for it. Power isn't free.

    First-time sub and love your insight on the subject. As a Black man, I know first hand how powerful our vote is. We were responsible for having the first Black President in the White House who served 2 terms. We also assist in not voting in 2016 to allow Trump in the White House. ( I voted for Hillary). We as a people and as a country itself suffered for that mistake. Now we know Trump will stop there if he is re-elected and the GOP (Trump goons) will stop at nothing to make it happen. I voted early and glad to see the awesome turnout so far (57 + million early vote so far). No time to exhale for I know what went down in 2016 and was hurt by the outcome. Black and minority votes are power and as I see it, there is more new voter who is coming out. They are mostly those who want to see new ideas and changes that happen for the US. Even some of the old GOP is turning from the Trump train. Let's vote and get the clown out of office! That's #1 goal!!!
