Hats off to the incredible talent of Vicki Lawrence !.... Her transformation into the character of Mama is nothing short of amazing . She was so very young, just a teenager when she was hired to be on the `Carol Burnett Show`... I remember hearing Carol Burnett say in an interview that they did nothing to Vicki except put her in a gray wig and some padding under her old lady dress and gave her some glasses and she became mama...... She really made you believe she was a old cranky lady . Also she was so very versatile that she could play any character so well. I wish she could be honored with some type of prestigious award or big tribute while she`s still here. She deserves it !

I read Vicki was valedictorian and well accomplished all through school. Touring with The Young Ameficans must have been a thrill. To me, Vicki Lawrence would have great success in everything she set out to do.
She was 18yrs of age when they met. Not exactly a teenager.
She recorded the song...That's the Night When the Lights Went out in Georgia. Her husband wrote the song. Google the song. See her sing it.

Most Eunice skits tread a very fine line between comedy and tragedy. It's a delicate balancing act and all three actors handle it with finesse.

What mama meant by 'welcome to the club ' she was saying she knew Eunice got married cause she got pregnant. Mama was saying the same thing happened to HER. That's the 'club ' she was referring to. Thats why Eunice and Ed looked so shocked 😆
I find nothing on any networks these days as funny as these real comedic talents!

I used to watch this with my mom. We laughed so hard! Mom doesn't watch much television anymore. Seems the only way the new shows try to get a laugh is by talking about sex. Kinda sad really

Vicki Lawrence is absolutely a great actress. She has Mama so funny in every scene.
No wonder I was hooked on the Carol Burnett show as a kid; this is some good stuff!
I’m hooked on it now! This is great! Carol and Vickie and Harvey are so incredibly talented. You don’t see good stuff like this these days. The world is a totally different place now- I wish I could go back in time to the 70’s.

I remember watching this as a child at my grandmother's house after the sun went down! I am now 35 years old and a mother myself and live watching these with my eldest daughter 🥰♥ Don't know how much longer we have with my grandmama but we have been watching Carol Burnett all week!!
I was always fascinated by all the wigs Carol wore on her show. I always thought wigs were neat... So I tried to copy and make them all out of wrapping paper lol

I like to imagine them staying at a hotel and the guests downstairs listen to them from the vent, and then they head upstairs and listen to them through their door!
This show was timeless so you know. Vicki Lawrence was and will forever be remembered as Mama.

@@spfsincerely1341 I just found out that this skit was from The Carol Burnett show S09E04 and at the end, after Carol does her goodbye song and the closing credits come on screen, you can hear the announcer saying that a guy named Dick Clair did the voice of Carl Harper. Mystery solved😁

I remember this skit when it was new...as a child and teen I never missed an episode of The Carol Burnett Show. My whole family watched it.It is a classic.

They did an incredible job making and developing these characters. Aside from dialogue, the facial expressions and deliveries are outstanding.
Carol, Vicki, Harvey, Tim...ALL EXCELLENT performers! We'll not see their like again anytime soon.

Most adequate flashback ever. Carol Burnette was on the best Hollywood legs list in the late 70s - early 80s.
It was really sweet to see Eunice and Ed at a more innocent time in their relationship before the grew to resent each other . Back when they supported each other's dreams💞

There was a celebration of the show when they went off the air after all those years, and I was appalled that Burnett didn't mention or thank Lyle Wagoner at ALL for his many years on the show. I thought he was fantastic & very funny in his own right. I don't know what went wrong between them, but it was quite the obvious slight to him.

The look of absolute mortification on Eunice's face when Mama and Carl are going at it is priceless. Been there, done that so I understand Eunice's character completely. Great acting by all.

I miss these shows so much. They just do not have anything like this on TV today. Would love to know who or whom on the Carol Burnett Show came up with these characters and brought forth these Family episodes. Pure genius.

That was the style back in late 40's, early 1950's. I know that cause my Mom told me that she use to wear them to high school.

@@beckyallen2316 I don't think wearing a sheer blouse that showed your bra was the style. I'm sure women wore a slip or something so you didn't see their bra. I can't imagine most parents in the 40s or 50s allowing their daughter to wear that to high school.

I think both Mama Harper & Eunice had to get married because they got pregnant first.

"Welcome to the club." Classic! Took Eunice's breath away. Young people always overlook the fact that their parents were once young too -- had sexual curiosity and experimented with sex.
That and Mama, too, HAD to get married when pregnant with Eunice. Or maybe Ellen? Not sure which one's older. :)

@@Alusnovalotus Yeah, but, this is Raytown, Missouri, because they mentioned Lee's Summitt one time on one of the episodes, and I think I read somewhere that the writer of the skits was from Raytown, MO.
This is to me one of the best sketch series on the best comedy variety show. This is realistic criticism without too much exaggeration. Tennessee Williams was obviously inspiration for these, as Eunice was the worst of a family of "unreliable narrators" of their own lives.
No, actually the 2 writers Dick Clair and Jenna McMahon (both from Chicago) wrote the sketches based on their own Mothers whom, it's said, they hated. Carol decided to play it southern as Eunice reminded her of her own Mother who along with the rest of her family were from Texas and Arkansas. The 2 writers were not pleased with Carol's changes.

Perhaps it was Carol's changes that were inspired by Williams in part, as Williams did base a lot of his unreliable narrators on real people as well. I personally, minus his preference, know quite a few families here in the South that are very much like his unreliable narrator characters and the Harper family, sadly. Knowing on any level that The Family were inspired by real people still is quite sad.
"You can't believe how uppity that teacher was. Everything had to be her way." God, the writing for this was so good. Who wrote this? Just that one line reveals so much about Eunice's character: she resents others around her for not immediately fulfilling all of the illusions she has about herself. She's like a working-class version of Blanche DuBois.
Shes always blaming others for her lack of whatever. Mama, Ed here most of it.
She couldn't tell the difference between a constructive critic whose job it was to help her improve, and Mama's relentless put-downs. :(
The more you dissect Eunice's character, the more interesting it gets. Truly amazing writing by amazing writers of this one in a lifetime tv show.
In hindsight, both Eunice and mama were probably raging narcissists. 🤣

Carol was a fabulous actor in "The Family". Her facial expressions, and the way she would carry her voice in a high pitch infasising the words, was very funny.
...dear GOD, that was most SINISTER delivery Vicki (as 'Mama') EVER given a line! (11:55) ...MANY Women who want to escape their narc Parents (esp. Mothers) PULL this, but for an ACTUAL Mother, to acknowledge it to the Daughter, was VERY forward thinking for it's time...BRAVO....

Actually, the $2.00 comment was a 50s price. The scene goes back to the 50s. The present takes place in the 70s. Coming from the 70s myself, Chinese food for two was about $5.00 bucks :)
