      @@judethaddeus9856 In other words, the role was perfect for her. Not many know this, but Carol was originally in the role of Mama. They both decided to switch the roles around and include Southern accents, much to the writers chagrin - and it worked. Priceless!

      Yes. I think Tim purposely did not do a lot of ad-libbing during Family sketches because they were so well written and they also had this seed of tragedy inside them. He was a sharp fella; knew what skits he could go crazy with and which ones to keep his antics low key.
      But of course there was one notorious ad-lib Conway did with Eunice and Mama ... that hilarious bit he did as Mickey sharing a memory about Siamese elephants. That was in the Family "Password" sketch (in their eleventh and final season), a sequence which included Dick Van Dyke as Eunice's new romance, Dan.

    In real life, we endure such tragedies, and the only way to ease the pain and tell these stories is to “see the humor in it”. So many time I find myself saying “well if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry” But mainly these skits let us know in one way or another that we are not alone, and there’s a real comfort in that. Plus, she doesn't see that what she says can really hurt like at 6:59. She reminds me a bit of my grandma, I love her, but she always says or does things in a way, or tells people what to do, so that everything turns out like she wants. So, the weaponized guilt, that the same elders that I loved and respected, and still do, almost always slid off me, like water off a duck! Unless, it was one of those rare occasions where I had something to feel a little bad about. Otherwise, it didn't work!

      On the rare occasion that my grandmother said or did anything to upset me, instead of letting me just take a few minutes or so, to get over it, as I was never one to throw fits, or be disrespectful, even while upset, she had a favorite line! That was "wouldn't you feel awful if grandma died in her sleep tonight, while you were mad at her?" I always did an reverse on that! "Wouldn't you feel bad if you upset me, and I died of some unknown childhood condition in my sleep? Even if I did, my soul would understand that family just some times gets to one another!" Or something like that! To her credit, she'd always tell me that I was right. And too wise for my age, and too smart for my own good! 😆 I should call and see if she remembers those incidents! I'm still a "grandma's baby," despite being a man in my 30s! I'll never age out of it! 😁

    I never made this connection before, but the fact that you can see all of the dirt and dust on the walls around where she used to hang her pictures reveals an important detail. Mama is quick to criticize Eunice for alleged poor house-keeping, but she drank just as much as Eunice, and she has a horrible temper just like Eunice, quick to blame other people for her problems just like Eunice... Mama's house-keeping for her own home was no better than Eunice's. Like mother like daughter.

    • @jonnaking3054
      @jonnaking3054 Год назад +1

      To be fair that pretty much happens to everyone's home. When pictures have been hanging for years and YEARS, the wall looks like that when you take them down... just like the carpet under the sofa will look like new

    I’m so enjoying seeing all of the Family skits. I’ve never seen them all and I’m making it a point to watch every single one! Do you have the one where they go to the fancy restaurant? It is only available in a poor quality that someone recorded off their TV

    • @anacom4238

      I'm watching all I can as well. My favorites are probably the restaurant episode and the ones where she sees the psychiatrist.
      This one with Mama moving out made me feel sad as much as I laughed, though. I dunno, it was too realistic or something.
