The overhunting thing is the tragedy of the commons. That's the actual term for it. Its basically "No matter how much you personally do something its not going to have a negative effect so you can go ahead and do it freely. But if everyone does that, then it will have a negative effect." The name itself derives from "The Commons"; in medieval, renaissance, and early modern europe there were often areas which were owned collectively by the local population. Those were the commons (as in, common ownership). These were usually uncultivated lands and anyone could hunt or fish or graze or gather there because no one was using them. It worked perfectly fine because each commons sustained such a small amount of people that it would have taken active and concerted effort to bring long term harm.
However, once it becomes viable and reasonable (from the perspective of an individual) to overhunt/farm/graze/gather whatever from an area, that starts having an effect. Keep in mind that historically the main reason to use everything was cost; if you didn't extract excess salt from preserved food, then you suddenly found yourself needing to buy more salt. If you threw away parts of a carcass you weren't using, then you couldn't sell them off to specialists who could use them. But once it makes sense for one person to say "If I kill five beavers, field strip them, head back, and sell off everything I'll get less than if I hunt twenty beavers, only take their fur, and sell those" then it makes sense for everyone to say that.
There's a variety of solutions to the matter, but all of them depend on a society which respects property rights. Whether these are property rights of the individual or the collective don't really matter; both highly collective societies and highly individualistic societies have consistently shown that they're willing to exploit commons to the point of tragedy for short term gain.

Egyptians did not worship cats. There was a goddess with the head of a cat, but the worship did not spread to regular cats. Cats were useful as mousers, and killed and mumified to join the dead.

And he gets torns to shred at the end of the movie when he understands that he killed the "perfect perfume" by accident
