IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Always counter punch on the same side you blocked with. I know it feels good to block with your right hand and then throw a left hook, but it leaves you way more exposed defensively.
Very good breakdown. I like to do three things from high guard. 1 present it and whatever punch my opponent throws I step back. Now, I have an idea how he would like to attack my highd guard and he also learned that I'm not just going to stay in place when in high guard. 2. I am in high guard and whatever my opponent decides to throw I pivot to my left. I am seeing again how he decided to attack my guard by staying relatively safe using my footwork. Now, my opponent is even more confused as I showed him a different defense while still not using the high guard. 3. I am in my high guard and now I decide to catch and shoot. I switch back to step back, to catch and shoot, to pivot, to high guard and when he decides to attack switch to shoulder roll.
I also like when someone attempts an uppercut just a slight slipping motion to the left or right they will hit your elbow and you are set up nicely for a counter punch/combo
3:10 Hi nice vid I would add the following DO's: - Crunch your upper body in high guard/ arched cat back like a C-shape so your ellbows can protect your mid section better (instead of staying tall/upright) if opponent throws bodyshots. DON'Ts: - even if you're shelled up never close eyes. You have to see incoming shots and try to have an "active high guard" like close the mid when straight punches come, raise ellbow when overhand/head hooks come in, crunch when body shots come in... - don't be stationary in a high guard when your opponent unleashes on you
Thanks for the input, bro! I'm gonna have to dispute your crunched upper body/C-shape thing though. It opens up your body too much especially to the sides. It's not a natural position and makes breathing more difficult. To protect your midsection, you can do what I demonstrated at 03:52.

Put your fist up in a high guard with a close fist and then out your hands up open fist and you can see the difference in how much more you have to guard against body punches. Practice that and perfect it but practice for muscle memory. Hope you can understand this

Good video. As a coach who has coached people in the high guard for years, may I offer some points? 1) you don't have to move your arm, or your hand away from your face to defend the body. Keep the fist hanged on the forehead, and drop level, and move the elbow just a bit. It's magic.. stay protected upstairs 2) you are dropping your hands a lot in your combos. careful. 3) careful catching with your lead, this is typically not recommended in boxing
Bro this the most information I received from just the high guard when I boxed my coach always said put your hands up but I always felt stiff so I did shoulder roll but now you made high guard make a lot of sense to use

Bro you dont know how better this works for now in sparring you helped me you see im kinda tall and my coach tell me all the time to use my jab but every time i do they are pushing towards it or jabing towards it now i cant just use high guard then jab parry then jab again, thx for that😂
3:38 The right upper cut body stab is very underatted. Just need to shuffle/step forward to give it more meat 🍖 to 'em potatoes 🥔 great for in-close body ripping, bobbing, and weaving counter work! Well Done!
Hey coach, I've been using exclusively the high guard with a rounded back and the elbows tuck into the body, offering a "full protection" when going inside or being hammered. I'm guessing about when to use this version of the high guard and transitioning between the two in relation to distance. I hope you come back to this in a future video! Anyway, thanks a lot for the great advices.
Thank you for the support! I don’t recommend the rounded back because it exposes the sides of the body. Also, it’s difficult to tighten the core to sustain body shots when you’re hunched over like that. Also, your breathing ability is also hindered when you’re hunched over/rounded back. And you become more susceptible to uppercuts as it brings your chin more forward than the rest of your body and lower.
You can see some of my utilization of the high guard on this video here where I show the best defenses to use in certain situations live so it's almost like sparring: ruclips.net/video/67rhB2RdQI4/видео.html I also posted a video last year where I showed some sparring footage towards the end of this video at 4:07 ruclips.net/video/hi6CGG_fluo/видео.htmlsi=EcGVzS99brGREDWB&t=247

Thanks bro! I know someone else asked about that too. I'll try to make one on that topic soon. Short answer right away is you'd want to look towards their shoulders area, but when I really dissect the topic to make the video, I'm sure a lot of extra points will come out as well.

Love this. Where do you place your fingers and palms in your high guard? Anatomically trying to understand it since it still hurts my temples when punches land through the guard. Maybe fingers on forehead and palms on cheekbones?
Thank you! Fingers should be by your eyebrows. The downside on blocking is that you still absorb some of the impact of the punch which can incrementally wear you down. Think of blocking as a last line of defense. Head movement and parries should come first. If you do prefer to block, then you can elevate your hand to block so that your wrist/palm hits your temples instead.
coach, im short asf, and my body type is so stocky, make a video about pressure fighting, maybe? And inside fighting. Anyway the high guard is extremely good for me, sometimes i adjust to the philly,
Here's a video I did on inside fighting a long time ago. I'm going to have to revisit the topic sometime soon. ruclips.net/video/cJbafJHXpWI/видео.html
@@coachpillowfists yeah, and do you think philly shell can be great for short boxers?, i really need someone who really don't hold back on giving knowledge about philly shell. There's no coaches aroun my town that teaches technique about the philly shell. So i hope you can make a video about it, thank you coach.
@@FerquesMquenelJimmyDojo-og5st In my opinion, the Philly shell is not a good option if you're significantly shorter than your opponent. A taller opponent will be punching down on your head so it'll be harder to shoulder roll that as opposed to shoulder rolling a punch coming from a lower or similar height level. Another issue is that your lead hand being held lower will have to travel a greater distance to get to your opponent's head which gives him more time to react to lead handed punches such as the jab. I'm not saying you should totally rule out the philly shell because I do think versatility in stances is important, but just be aware of these things if you utilize it against taller opponents. I'll see what video I can make for it in the future.
Brother i am interested on ur view of how to make a high guard strong. So it doesn't buckle under pressure. I usually place my wrists or the bottom of my hand to the forehead/side of the head for hooks and create a strong frame. But i am lacking something on the hooks as a strong puncher will still rattle you. How do you place ur hands on ur head for maximum effectiveness on ur high guard?
Hey brotha! Thank you for your comment. I actually have a video coming out within the next couple weeks on something that will specifically help you with that. If you're still having problems after seeing that video, please let me know. 🥊
When fighters do a high guard, are they putting their gloves directly on their head? If the opponent lands a punch directly onto the high guard, doesn't the punch push their own gloves into their head and wouldn't that still hurt? Or do they put their high guard slightly away from their head to try to prevent any contact to their head? Are their hands head loose and relaxed? or are they held firm to negate the opponent's punch?
If you think about it, if the opponent's punch makes contact with your guard, having your guard slightly away will have your hands slap back at your head even harder than if you were to have your guard held against your head. Here's a video that would better explain your question as well: ruclips.net/video/_YavK8pPmw8/видео.html I would also recommend watching this video about which defenses to use in any given situation: ruclips.net/video/67rhB2RdQI4/видео.html
I'm not sure if you watched the entire video, but at 03:41, I show some ways you can defend and counter against jabs and body shots. It just takes a lot of practice.
I know that bag/training gloves are stiffer and harder than competition/fight gloves, especially when not fully broken in so it can make it difficult to open your hands in your guard. In this case, just let your hand open naturally inside the glove then close when you punch.
@@3.Crowns No, any glove no matter the weight can be broken in. It's all about usage. The more you use it, the more it gets broken in. Some gloves such as training/sparring gloves are a bit more firmly constructed to hold up for protection, but every glove can be broken in. Lots of heavy bag work!
That's not a weird question at all. I'd suggest 12 or 14 oz for a beginner. That gives you enough protection to not hurt your hands but light enough to allow you to work on your technique more freely.
@@morylmao5794 There is no "best" stance. It's whatever stance fits best for you as you develop. But keep it conventional if you're new to boxing. Don't get too fancy yet because that will lead to bad habits. I made a video on the basic stance and footwork in this video here: ruclips.net/video/uZaXgfweGyw/видео.html.
You can find out one of the reasons in this video ruclips.net/video/qkeaqUKHapQ/видео.html because he uses it to set up counters. I'll put it in my notes to make a future video on the topic more specifically.
Straight been learning High guard for 6 months at a boxing gym, went to my mates gym and they laughed at me calling it stupid, since it covers my eyes too much and when im getting punched im looking down -_-
"Fighters" who laugh at other practitioners and call them stupid have lots of insecurities and aren't happy with themselves. That's why they laugh, to feel empowered, not because you look "stupid". In 6 more months when you're tagging them up, it's not gonna be so funny to them (if you work consistently and intelligently).
Well yes shoulder conditioning is vital, but also recognize that he isn't constantly in high guard the entire time. Sometimes he lowers his hands when out of range, sometimes he goes to philly shell, etc. Here are a couple videos that might help you as well: ruclips.net/video/pGij8A9umVo/видео.html 3 Ways to Stop Shoulder Fatigue ruclips.net/video/xNsOcGDy7Zc/видео.html This video might help you mix things up with your hands/guard as well so you're not over-exhausting your shoulders.
@@coachpillowfists i see. I’ll make sure to check them out. I really appreciate it. I’m an amateur fighter out of Maryland and train in DC. Love the style of countering and coming forward, Which i know that the high guard is good style to adapt that.
You should never use the high guard with a close fist. When using the high guard is an open fist that way it covers everything and you don't blind your view. Watch Winkie Wright, Tank Davis and Terrence Crawford its a potent and effective high guard technique
As coach addresses in the video, you don't want to be completely static with this guard. Some guys like Arthur Abraham and Joshua Clottey can get away with it, but you got to have a great chin.
Ring Magazine's Current Top Pound for Pound rankings: (1) Oleksandr Usyk (2) Naoya Inoue (3) Terence Crawford (4) Errol Spence Jr (5) Canelo Alvarez (6) Dmitry Bivol (7) Vasiliy Lomachenko (8) Josh Taylor. At least 6 out of 8 of those use the high guard. ✌🏽
God doesn’t want anybody in hell because He loves us, but you must understand why we deserve hell and why those who refuse to live under His authority will go there. He gave us the law (Ten Commandments) not to make us righteous, but rather to show us our sin (Romans 3:20). We’re not sinners because we sin, but rather we sin because we’re sinners. Sin is the nature of our flesh that we are born with due to the sin of Adam in the garden. For someone to be justified before God they have to be sinless. We’ve all sinned (Romans 3:23), and the the law demands death for those who sin (Romans 6:23). God is righteous, so He must punish our sin, which is what He did through His Son Jesus Christ on the cross. Jesus is Holy and sinless, yet He received our sin when He died on the cross, so that we can be righteous before God (2 Corinthians 5:21). When He died on the cross, He said “It is finished” (John 19:30), which means He paid the full price for all of your sins (past, present, and future) to be forgiven. He was buried and rose again from the dead. God will forgive anybody who puts their full trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation. We aren’t saved based on our good deeds, but only by the grace of God (Ephesians 2:8-9). His precious blood that He shed is the only reason why we can be forgiven of our sins (Hebrews 9:22). If you confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised Him from the dead, then you’ll be saved (Romans 10:9). You are born-again with the Spirit of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), and are not only legally justified before God, but also are accredited His righteous (Romans 4:24). Believers live for Christ now, so get to know Him through His Word. I recommend reading the book of Romans and the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), and watching Pastor Joseph Prince’s online sermons!

coach, im short asf, and my body type is so stocky, make a video about pressure fighting, maybe?
@@coachpillowfists Great answer, and i thought so too.
it did work, against some guys my height, or if they're just an inch taller.
Hi coach i'm trying to get good at my jab right now
I got you! That was one of my first videos ruclips.net/video/zIgAcD8i1pg/видео.html 🥊
Defo, sounds good man thanks!
Here's a video that would better explain your question as well: ruclips.net/video/_YavK8pPmw8/видео.html
I would also recommend watching this video about which defenses to use in any given situation: ruclips.net/video/67rhB2RdQI4/видео.html
How to I deal with jabs getting thru constantly and also body shots
I'm not sure if you watched the entire video, but at 03:41, I show some ways you can defend and counter against jabs and body shots. It just takes a lot of practice.
@@coachpillowfists oh my b thx

Catch n counter with a high guard deadly
👌🏽👌🏽
Right
How can you open your fist in your glove? Because my gloves keep my fist closed.
I know that bag/training gloves are stiffer and harder than competition/fight gloves, especially when not fully broken in so it can make it difficult to open your hands in your guard. In this case, just let your hand open naturally inside the glove then close when you punch.
@@coachpillowfistshow do you brake into gloves? Do you need lower oz gloves like 12 or 14
@@3.Crowns No, any glove no matter the weight can be broken in. It's all about usage. The more you use it, the more it gets broken in. Some gloves such as training/sparring gloves are a bit more firmly constructed to hold up for protection, but every glove can be broken in. Lots of heavy bag work!
i don’t know if this is a weird question but i just started boxing and i don’t know what gloves and glove size to use
That's not a weird question at all. I'd suggest 12 or 14 oz for a beginner. That gives you enough protection to not hurt your hands but light enough to allow you to work on your technique more freely.
@@coachpillowfists and what is the best stance for boxing cause my coach said i kinda have a low stance
@@coachpillowfists i’m sorry for the questions but do you have a video about how to wrap hands for boxing

Can you explain why Canelo lean forward with the high guard?
You can find out one of the reasons in this video ruclips.net/video/qkeaqUKHapQ/видео.html because he uses it to set up counters. I'll put it in my notes to make a future video on the topic more specifically.

Excuse me. How to block uppers and the 1-2 with a high guard?
I cover those from 03:41 forward.
@@coachpillowfists thank you from Mex couch
Straight been learning High guard for 6 months at a boxing gym, went to my mates gym and they laughed at me calling it stupid, since it covers my eyes too much and when im getting punched im looking down -_-
"Fighters" who laugh at other practitioners and call them stupid have lots of insecurities and aren't happy with themselves. That's why they laugh, to feel empowered, not because you look "stupid". In 6 more months when you're tagging them up, it's not gonna be so funny to them (if you work consistently and intelligently).
I was guilty of using my hands as shield. Got knocked on my ass 😂.
Thanks for the tips 💪🏾

I just think Canelo with the high guard 🤜🏼
Yeah he utilizes it beautifully! 👊🏽
@@coachpillowfists i would think that you need amazing shoulder conditioning right? For your guard to not fade in later rounds
Well yes shoulder conditioning is vital, but also recognize that he isn't constantly in high guard the entire time. Sometimes he lowers his hands when out of range, sometimes he goes to philly shell, etc.

@@coachpillowfists i see. I’ll make sure to check them out. I really appreciate it. I’m an amateur fighter out of Maryland and train in DC. Love the style of countering and coming forward, Which i know that the high guard is good style to adapt that.
@@moisesescobarr Awesome bro! Countering and coming forward is my ideal style as well 👌🏽
I started using the high guard after watching Canelo.
Great choice of fighter to mimic!
You should never use the high guard with a close fist. When using the high guard is an open fist that way it covers everything and you don't blind your view. Watch Winkie Wright, Tank Davis and Terrence Crawford its a potent and effective high guard technique
I actually have a video coming out this Thursday on that topic.
Protect that beautiful facade at all costs

It didn't help Eduard Gutknecht much when he boxed George Groves. He's a nursing case for life now.
As coach addresses in the video, you don't want to be completely static with this guard. Some guys like Arthur Abraham and Joshua Clottey can get away with it, but you got to have a great chin.
@@victorcreed3 Gutknecht didn't get knocked out though.
Ring Magazine's Current Top Pound for Pound rankings: (1) Oleksandr Usyk (2) Naoya Inoue (3) Terence Crawford (4) Errol Spence Jr (5) Canelo Alvarez (6) Dmitry Bivol (7) Vasiliy Lomachenko (8) Josh Taylor. At least 6 out of 8 of those use the high guard. ✌🏽
brain damage from uppercutting myself 🤣🤣🤣
That little self-uppercut did some damage 😂 Had me forgetting my next sentence lmao
