    hey coach, i have a question for you regarding stiff/strong/hard/power jabs... i know that you studied under jeff mayweather. have you seen the video or the short of floyd throwing strong jabs at the heavy bag? if not, check it out if you can. what i'm getting at is that a most of the power jabs thrown by boxers that aren't out of the former soviet union don't use the corkscrew. what technique(s) do you recommend for strong jabs that aren't cork screw style? I went to montell griffin's gym for awhile and some people said the stiff jab is the only jab you go into with a ready to flex a bit earlier mindset... but it eats energy... i would love to hear your input on other stiff jab approaches. also, any content at all that can pass along jeff mayweather wisdom would be amazing! ps. i know jeff teaches to pivot the front foot on the lead hook to beginners... i was giving you stick in a non serious way... but later i thought "hey, this dude doesn't know me or my sense of messing around... what am i doing?"... my fault man, i forget the internet next has no context or inflection behind it. anyways, keep up the great work!

    • @coachpillowfists
      @coachpillowfists 4 дня назад

      If you watch that Floyd Mayweather jab video you're referring to, you can see that the power is initiated with his rear foot. It's very subtle so the regular eye won't recognize it, but the quick push off his rear foot allows him to whip his shoulder into that jab. You're right, you don't need to corkscrew your fist to get power into the jab. You just need to understand how to properly whip the shoulder into the jab using the push off the rear foot. You can refer back to this video: ruclips.net/video/lgCxChdId7k/видео.html And not a problem bro 😆, I appreciate the support! You know, it's weird with different coaches because each coach teaches things that conflict with things that another coach says or allows. There are things Jeff taught me that conflicted with how I've been taught by another coach and vice versa. That doesn't make them a bad coach or any less competent. Everybody has their way of teaching, and their beliefs based on their experience with the sport. With all of the different styles in boxing today, there's really no right or wrong answer. So my teachings are based on my experience having been with the 3 different coaches so it's pretty much a 3 in 1 package 😆.

    • @coachpillowfists
      @coachpillowfists 4 дня назад

      As a matter of fact, this is a great video idea. I think I’ll do a video dissecting the way Floyd Mayweather is able to generate that extra power on that jab. Thanks for inspiring the video idea 😄.

      @coachpillowfists thanks coach! I agree 100% with everything you said. I really like how you explained that wrist snap. I'm trying to start the transition from club fighter to coach. I'm trying to teach some various age groups how and when to use the power jab and how to start from the feet and end at the fist with a flicking jab (over their pushes). But several in my group are always using strong jabs and completely gassing out their jab (and getting timed bad). I think I'm just going to refer them to your videos on the topic and tell them what you said to me. You have a talent for explaining and demonstrating. I'm still grappling with doing both at the same time. It's a lot of demonstration with poor explanation or vice versa from me lol. It's a hard transition! When I was about 12, I had a new coach who was trying to teach us the hook without moving our front foot. Just about all off us had a really hard time. So, I got it in my head that I was going to show the non pivot first. Sometimes, it works, but I have to teach the lead foot pivot to help them move their torso correctly.

    Peek-a-boo style was so effective for the prime Mike Tyson not just because of his overwhelming power. But because of his exceptional speed and timing. Not to mention his footwork, changing from one place to another at the blink of an eye and throwing a devastating combination of powerful punches or a one time power counter. Peek-a-boo is a demanding and exhausting style for anyone who chose this fighting style. But bear in mind that the true objective of peek-a-boo is to throw a counter punch in an aggressive way..

    • @coachpillowfists

      I would say never count out any specific punch. Anybody is susceptible to any punch including body jabs unless they're a superhuman. It's about how well the practitioner is at defending it regardless of what stance/style they employ. That's what makes boxing a chess match.

My coach told me that, and I've been practicing that but I feel that I'm stiffening up too much trying to land it on the first two knuckles. Should I keep my punch loose and then before impact bend the wrist slightly? Thanks

    • @coachpillowfists

    Hey coach, I've been using exclusively the high guard with a rounded back and the elbows tuck into the body, offering a "full protection" when going inside or being hammered. I'm guessing about when to use this version of the high guard and transitioning between the two in relation to distance. I hope you come back to this in a future video! Anyway, thanks a lot for the great advices.

    • @coachpillowfists
      @coachpillowfists 10 дней назад

      Thank you for the support! I don’t recommend the rounded back because it exposes the sides of the body. Also, it’s difficult to tighten the core to sustain body shots when you’re hunched over like that. Also, your breathing ability is also hindered when you’re hunched over/rounded back. And you become more susceptible to uppercuts as it brings your chin more forward than the rest of your body and lower.

  • @nb0616
    @nb0616 11 дней назад

    a good way to get out quick is to use "push steps" (kinda like how you use your rear foot for a jab). but now you're going to push back with your front foot after the punch to get out. bonus points (in most situations) if you move back at an angle (any way but straight) with your hands up.

    • @coachpillowfists

  • @nb0616
    @nb0616 11 дней назад

    NOOOOOOO!!!!! don't pivot that front foot unless you're throwing a check hook. you have the weight transfer right (main source of power) and your shoulder out movement is almost there... flex those back muscles in while moving down then out and up towards the target. think of it like this, try to throw a 3-2 or a 3-3 your way with the pivot... then try without. see which is faster, more balanced, more powerful. also think of the best hooks in boxing... watch them and pay attention to the front foot.

    • @coachpillowfists
      @coachpillowfists 11 дней назад

      I think it's definitely up to preference. Sometimes I pivot the front foot and sometimes I don't. But when teaching it to someone new, it's good to tell them to pivot the front foot because it helps them with the hip turn and weight transfer. But yes, the hip turn is the key thing here.

Get rid of that "pressure" It does you and the channel no good Post whenever you like. I for my part will not unsub you just because you did not oost for 6 months or so. For examole I subbed a channel I think it's "Striking Thoughts" where they posted fightbreakdowns and gameolans explained with graphics. They did not oost for 2 years, but then they posted again ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and I was cool with it. Don't feel the urge to do something just because the others do it Also you should enjoy yourself doing it. Otherwise where's the sense in continuing? It's like hanging on to a relationship which makes you unhappy 😄

    Your videos are much appreciated and I also watch older ones as the content stays relevant ... As I always get curious about the boxing youtubers I follow, if you're willing to share, you can make a video showing us a glimpse of your life and what's keeping you so busy. See the man behind the coach.
