This band is Australian, and the song specifically talks about the struggle of the Aboriginal population and the theft of their land and resources. The 45 degrees is Celsius- 113 degrees F. He speaks about the cockatoos and the types of trees seen in the Outback.
The lead singer became a Minister in the Labor government in Australia. an environmentalist and supporter of Indigenous Australians causes such as land rights which he song is about. Let's give it back like a lot of indigenous persons around the world dispossesed by force of the land they lived on for centuries, the American Tribes included.
One of my favourite songs from the 80's. So much nostalgia. I was obviously too young to grasp the meaning, but it made an impact on my life, just from lyrics anyway. Thank you from Sweden.
An Australian band's protest song about it being time to pay rent on the land we occupy which belongs to the indigenous people. Midnight Oil write songs which make us think about the world we live in and the ways in which we've messed things up for lots of people and for the planet itself.
Show AB the ❤ for taking on music from before his time and from across his globe people without explanation of what the song is about and just seeing how it makes him feel. That is what music is at its core. Much luv. Tara da OG
Loved the song, even though, at the time I was not aware of the meaning of the song! But the beat and sound, voice and everything are spectacular!!🔥🔥 Thanks for your reaction!!❤❤
Fantastic Aus band, as mentioned very politically minded. Another great track of theirs (amongst many others) is Blue Sky Mine.. this sure brought back some memories! Thanks for the reaction, another great 80’s band you might want to check out if you haven’t already is Crowded House, technically an NZ band but we Aussies claim them as ours 😉
A stunningly beautiful, iconic video and a song that has stood the test of time. Its message about fairness to Native peoples after colonization speaks to people of every continent -- this particular one is the aboriginals of Australia.
🤗This video was shot 🇦🇺in the middle of Australia.🤔English colonists 😥invaded every continent.😥And claimed the land😥 for the empire.🤔From America, Australia 🇦🇺, 😥India, South Africa, 😥Pakistan, New Zealand,😥and Pacific Islands.🤔No indigenous people 😥were ever given proper 😥compensation for this invasion.🤔This song says it about time 👍that the rent is paid!🤔Or better yet, give it back.🫶Most of the land 🏜️in the middle🇦🇺 of Australia is desert 🏜️ temperatures are very high,🏜️so when you sleep 🛌 at night it feels like you’re burning.💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💕💕💋💕💕💕
As everyone else has explained, they’re a very politically active Australian band, and this song is about how their native peoples were treated about the same as they have been here in the Americas-practically exterminated, forcefully relocated, kids taken away and put into boarding schools to Anglicize them, etc. They’ve got a great catalog overall, but I’m gonna recommend checking out Forgotten Years. It came out in the 80’s when we had the last of the WWI vets dying out (like the last remaining WWII vets are now). Although that seems like it might be depressing, it isn’t. Like this, it’s about a serious subject, but not depressing. Check it out when you’re in the mood for something like that.
Seconded - “Forgotten Years” is the next step into the Midnight Oil rabbit hole. One of Australia’s greatest and most treasured bands - I put them in the same conversation as AC/DC, Cold Chisel & INXS.
@@shmick6079yes! I’m a HUGE INXS fan. I’m not as familiar w/Cold Chisel yet simply bc they didn’t really get the following here in the US like they did back home, but I’ve been listening to them on RUclips. He definitely needs to check out “Good Times” w/Michael Hutchence and Jimmy Barnes together. Such a fun track.
@ yeah that “Good Times” track was huge. Cold Chisel was recently voted as the greatest Australian artist of all time on rock radio here in Oz. They are the best imo. Their first 4 albums are like the backdrop to Australian life for multiple generations.
Probably not in my top 10 Midnight Oil songs, but still iconic, like many of their songs. Check out the following: Forgotten Years The Power and the Passion King of the Mountain Short Memory The Dead Heart Blue Sky Mine Best of Both Worlds Read About It Kosciusko US Forces When the Generals Talk And if you love the dancing (Peter Garret’s dancing is legendary lol), you should check out the “Oils on the Water” live video. The song “Stand in Line” has some pretty great rug-cutting.
Australia is a colonised country. The traditional owners were dispossessed and forced into Christianity and Western beliefs eg. burning beds and earth turning. They had their own way of viewing the world which worked for 80,000 years.
Hey, appreciate you listening to some Aus rock from the '80's. Requester could have given you at least a little heads up, like at least where they are from, lol. Might have given you a chance of understanding it. Thanks anyway, I enjoyed this. ✌❤
I swear to god, only an American is capable of not knowing in which part of the world this was recorded 🤦 like bro, do you not see the scenery? Do you not hear the accent? I understand, you not getting the message, even tho it's pretty obvious, but come on... Seriously?
Native peoples were removed forcibly from lands in Australia. This was about giving those people back their lands.
Yupperz........
❤
Never going to happen
Not removed. Deaded
No different to 100 percent of the globe!

@jamescormack8602. • As a Native member of the Chippewa Tribe in Minnesota "I THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENT!!!"
I climbed the fence to be at their concert, I really shouldn’t have I was so young
His political career was an absolute disaster unfortunately.
the song is about giving land back to Australian indigenous aborigines
One of my favourite songs from the 80's. So much nostalgia. I was obviously too young to grasp the meaning, but it made an impact on my life, just from lyrics anyway. Thank you from Sweden.
Not only great musicians,, But also humanitarians & activists for the Native Aboriginal peoples of Australia.
This is my memories. 80's music is the best.❤❤❤❤
What a throw back to my younger years. Forgot how much I listened to this song. So good. Thank you for reacting to memories from my childhood.

You need to see a live performance...Peter Garrett's dancing in this was tame for him!
With love to my AU friends! Thank you AB for always crushing my huge list of random yet culturally important songs with such joy.

I was at one of their concerts, it was amazing.
@@Bri_g3 I am super jealous!
I was 12! One of the first cassette singles I ever bought 😅
I always thought if you could teach a lizard to sing, it would sound just like Peter Garrett. Love this song.

its about the plight of the aboriginal people of Australia
the best band in the world!!!!! Peter was always an absolute blast!
Midnight Oil I loved in the 80s as a young guy, as their music had meaning and was always making a point. Mafe me think as well as rock on.
Loved the song, even though, at the time I was not aware of the meaning of the song! But the beat and sound, voice and everything are spectacular!!🔥🔥
Thanks for your reaction!!❤❤
The lead singer started as a psychologist who realized he could reach more youth through music ❤
Peter Garrett? Psychologist? Don’t think so. He studied politics and law.
He’s talking about giving the land back to the native people
I loved watching this on MTV
Absolutely 🔥

Your sleeping at night, when it's hot comment is way off......
How can you sleep when your bed is burning is a reflection of guilt

45 degrees. Who knew it got that cold in the Outback.
45 degrees Celsius (temperature scale in Australia) is equal to 115 degrees Fahrenheit for the folks in the USA

Whenever a reactor reacts to a song, especially an Australian songs. Turn on the captions. You will get more from it and understand it better.
It's about giving dues to the aboriginals in Australia
🔥 Midnight Oil "Put Down That Weapon" 🔥 TRUST ME on this one my music lovin' brother.
He is an environmental scientist and 6'10"

Hes a politician now
I dont always agree with their political views but their musicis amazing.
This song should be introduced to Native American Indians.
Reparations for the Aboriginals.Pay them rent.
sorry but you are way off on your interpitation(sp). Australia for starters. Give the land back to the people.
Yes 👍

She actually did, I just forgot because I get so many requests 💯
Give native land back
Thank you.
Even if maybe you were wrong.
The Aboriginal people still do not have a voice in Australian parliament 😢
Australia is where they are
the Aborigines are very badly treated that is what this is talking about.
