We had these when I was with the armoured reserves in London in the mid 90’s. Very cold to drive in autumn. The best part is we had an ambulance version while we did our range qualifying and the damn thing wouldn’t start. The EME had us push the thing almost all the back to the shacks whilst dumping the clutch with no warning trying to bump start it. Needless to say for the rest of our range time we were extra carful to not get hurt. Not even a splinter. Lol. The next range weekend we had a proper LSVW ambulance on stand by.
Was an LSVW ever proper? I heard they were used by the Italian military as Follow Me trucks on airfields. About all they were good for. I have heard many Vehicle techs say they kept them employed and they had a full career because of the LSVW, MLVW and the Iltis. Not so much these days as many trucks get sent to local repair shops . Example: Reserve MSVS (9 tons I believe) built by Navistar and based on the International Workstar are still routinely serviced at civilian shops. Our Reserve unit had 4 and they are still sent out for service so no Vehicle Techs even work on them. Outsourcing to me limits our capability in time of need to take care of our own equipment. I was in Corner Brook NL recently and saw one at a local heavy truck repair shop.
Same tactic we used in the Army, my old fav was killing the power and the bloody cooling fan would still run sometimes on these even with the master switch key out in hand LOL
bullet proof engines (perhaps pull the cambelt cover and inspect the cam belt!!, also camshaft oil seals sometimes weep, strange half moon seal at one end?headlights look like mk1 golf, front indicators look to be late beetle/early mk1 golf just orientated upright.
@BritannicaRestorations you're got more self-control than me then lol. I would be thinking... if i do a couple of little bits to get it legal, it would be funny to drive it about....
I take it all back. It starts on 2and 1/2 year old petrol. Can't be a bad little engine. The clutch works and the brakes are working. As for the spare one, I bet it didn't take much to turn in into a Halfcut. What did you do, cut the two cills and exhuast and gravity did the rest?
The culvert filling - not about half a car’s worth of white painted rusty steel, is it? 😂. Apparently, you can recharge magic hammers by immersing them in Jamiesons. That Iltis would be a fun summer car, done up nicely.
Well now you've done it. Gone down that rabbithole of can it start ? Next thing will it drive ? Right after that it's can we take it to Moab ? Can't say I didn't enjoy the sound of that revving 4 pot. BTW the front brake lines on my old Volvo 242 were the same as the Iltis brake lines. Same flare and length. How would I know this ? unless......
Land Rover or not that wasn’t a concern of mine and the fact that it’s sad for God knows how long was. But a good mechanic can work on anything doesn’t matter the make model brand. It could’ve been a silver shadow and I still would’ve bet against it starting
Hi. Do you know or recommend anyone who can rebuild my adwest steering box? I have so much play in my steering identified to be my steering box and also leaking a lot. I am located in Toronto, Ontario. Thanks in advance
@BritannicaRestorations thank you. How much would it cost (i would take care of shipping) and what does a rebuild consist of? Or if easier is there an email or contact info we can connect on please?
Do love a good will it run video, I dont know many blokes that dont have a big grin on there faces when an old engine fires into life 🤣🤣
Thanks!
Nice work . Mike you running marathons . looking pretty fit .nice work
Thanks 👍
About time something went right Mike!......Excellent stuff, even if that motor looks like a Mini Moke had illicit relations with a Lightweight....😂
Lol! Good motor and no stuck clutch! About time something went right!!
At the beginning of this I thought I was going to see your fingers on fire from carb blowback. Congratulations
I bet those cup holders in the wings can hold at least two cases of beer each! 🇻🇨
A grand design!
In South Africa we would rubberise it, put in one case and fill with ice😎🦾

That 8 valve VW engine used to pop the Jack shaft seal out with blocked breathers, covered cam belt in oil
You just couldn’t resist having a tinker could you! Good luck gents
Poor Mark, he is no match for your quick wit 😂
Lol!

Most vehicles with factory electric fans have this feature - they are wired via a fused supply to the switch and fan to dissipate heat after a run
@BritannicaRestorations I know this but it's not the case with the iltis it's a dnd vehicle, batt master off nothing should work but these had quirks
bullet proof engines (perhaps pull the cambelt cover and inspect the cam belt!!, also camshaft oil seals sometimes weep, strange half moon seal at one end?headlights look like mk1 golf, front indicators look to be late beetle/early mk1 golf just orientated upright.
Worked your magic again 😊
I'm glad!
thats awesome - 1:0 for the iltis, like i sad a remarkable vehicle
The ditch got filled in, that's terrible news 😊
Bloody fly tippers! (Lol)
Did I hear correctly, those fly tippers came and blocked the culvert? The cads!
Total and absolute bounders! What are the chances of that?
Lol!
Yes, great day for you. I might want to trade my 1980 series 3 for it...haha
Not sure which is worse!
Lol!
Haha you done it now lol! You should know what happens when you start touching something... it will be in the workshop next 😆
Nope, going for sale, but it gives a new owner confidence it can be repaired!

Pretty much so...

Great point!
loved my Iltis..but was too much maintenance for me.
I think your starting to like it Mike you’ll be rebuilding it before you know it 😊
It is up far sale today! Has to be off my property by the end of October!
Well now you've done it. Gone down that rabbithole of can it start ? Next thing will it drive ? Right after that it's can we take it to Moab ?

The 1.9 Diesel will bolt right in.
Don't send Mike your car, he'll rev the bollocks off it...🤪
Gotta blow the cobwebs out!
I bet that car hasn’t turned a wheel since the Pope was a paperboy. 😅
only 19,000 km!
Nice to see it running but I wouldn’t care to be seen in it .
Hi, do you ever service Freelanders? I believe they're called LR2's over there
I sometimes see a LR2 in town but rare - Freelander 1 all but disappeared - very poor engines
Maybe it was the Hineken that did the trick
Well it does refresh the parts other beers cannot reach!
lol!
Now known as Mike Thor🔨
Lol!
Voodoo. Absolute voodoo. I would bet money you would’ve gotten anything out of that engine.
There you go - it's not all Land Rovers!
Land Rover or not that wasn’t a concern of mine and the fact that it’s sad for God knows how long was. But a good mechanic can work on anything doesn’t matter the make model brand. It could’ve been a silver shadow and I still would’ve bet against it starting

No idea who will do it on Toronto - I can do them here, but shipping may be expensive

You really should do a video on French.....if you can't fix it with a hammer, it must be electrical.
Kind of noisy taking it out of stealth mode🎉
Not so I’ll Iltis 😂
your buddy is not the sharpest tool in the shed
English isn't his first language, plus he has to translate from Yorkshireman!
I am trying to convert them here - takes time!
No problems
You have got a good show
