The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972 (COLREGs) are published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and set out, among other things, the "rules of the road" or navigation rules to be followed by ships and other vessels at sea to prevent collisions between two or more vessels.
COLREGs can also refer to the specific political line that divides inland waterways, which are subject to their own navigation rules, and coastal waterways which are subject to international navigation rules.
The COLREGs are derived from a multilateral treaty called the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea.
Merchant navy has various departments & I am from the Navigation department. I have recently been promoted to the rank of a 2nd Officer onboard Maersk Ship.

It is so good to hear you explain navigation. I think back to leisure boating days around Newcastle. Whilst certainly not on the scale of the Mighty Maersk the rules are exactly the same. Pas on the port side by turning starboard. I remember port and starboard by thing ok port has 4 letters so does left. So starboard must be right. Ha. Thank so much for another brilliant experience.

I think ALL the COLREG situations are interesting. Crossing, Overtaking, Restricted in Ability to Manoeuvre, etc. I too had to learn all these by heart for my navy watchkeeping certificate.
