Listen, no matter what you consider as a pet, this number is outrageous to say the least. If you do a simple google search of “how many cows are in India?” you will get a stat of Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Govt of India stating that there are 192.49 million (or 19.2 crore) cows in India. 60% of our population equals 70-80 crores approx, that’s less than 0.3 cows per person who allegedly has a pet in India. Infact, most of the people who have livestock posses multiple cows and often there are gaushalas with 100s of cows at one place. So likely this number is less that 0.1 cows per person who allegedly has a pet in India. The numbers just don’t add up. I don’t know how can one convince someone that 6 out of 10 people you meet randomly in the country have a pet, from our own personal experience you know that that’s simply not the case. Honestly, I really like Varun’s content but I expect him to double check the numbers he quotes even if they are sourced from Venture Capitalists, you still triangluate the figure you come at. I hope he addresses this, would be the right thing to do.
I had read the report when it came out around 6 months back most of it just talks about sectors to focus on but thanks Varun you really dwelled deep to derived some great ideas

Think about in the future. Let's say about only 8 to 9 years instead of present. It is not possible in present as only India 1 population have pet in there house but don't forget people of India 2 and India 3 they also want better life. Just like me. So 10% which the most of us are from INCLUDES delivery persons/Uber drivers/and some part of our domestic helps as well (if you live in NCR a full time maid charges a salary of about 15k-25k). So I can assure you SIXTY PERCENT OF INDIA does not own pets, it’ll be more like 6%. Unless you count cattle, livestock, farm animals which will take up your number to maybe 20% because again let’s remember, nearly 40% of india is LANDLESS LABOUR who can barely satisfy their own needs, let alone of a pet. No offence meant from the post. These are govt numbers and can be verified :) India isn’t just the 2cr ppl who consume, it’s also the 138 who don’t have the means to comsume. Just because they don’t have the means to “contribute” to capitalism doesn’t mean we other them entirely.
