Vincent D'Onofrio is criminally underrated actor. He just nails this role perfectly.
The fact he never has one an Osacr is why I still don't take the Academy seriously
That test scene is so genius. They’re trying to figure out who is willing to step up and take charge in a situation full of authority figures. A huge part of the MIB job is going to a scene and taking charge over other agencies.
The novelization also said that he was completely correct in his assessments. The aliens were all harmless, but that little girl WAS the danger. You can also kind of see it in Zed's reaction to what he's saying, at least until J gets on him.
It’s also a test of nonconformity and the willingness to look beyond the obvious and use logic, it’s really clever

He also demonstrates the ability to de-escalate tense situations and work with colleagues he's at odds with when he asks the other guy "Do you want to get down on this".
Fun fact: Men in Black is technically a Marvel movie. Back in the 90s Marvel comics bought the publisher that originally did Men in Black.

Fun Fact: The sunglasses used by the Men in Black are the Ray-Ban "Predator 2" glasses. After the film's release, Ray-Ban reported that sales of these glasses tripled from $1.6 million to $5 million.
Insectoid Research Fact: Vincent D'Onofrio researched his role as Edgar by watching a lot of bug documentaries. In order to achieve his character's distinctive walk, he put on knee braces so he couldn't bend his legs, and taped up his ankles.
Legendary Jump Fact: When James (Will Smith) jumps from the overpass onto the tour bus, he jumps from Pershing Square Bridge, the same location where Robert Neville (also Smith) is attacked by the demon dogs after the sun goes down in I Am Legend (2007).
Ray-Ban had a similar boost after the film "Risky Business" came out.
Weird because later in the series (MIB3 I think) they switched to Ray-Ban Baloramas - eyewear of choice for Dirty Harry and Ace Ventura.
Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith are one of the best duos in cinematic history... Their chemistry was solidified almost immediately 🔥🔥🔥🔥

The summer this movie came out, the marketing and hype for this movie was insane. There was even a cartoon series that came out the following fall that was actually pretty good for a Saturday morning cartoon, still had the humor but some stuff got dark

I don't remember seeing a Men in Black comic, but I used to read a lot of sci-fi back in the 70s and 80s and I remember some tales written around stories that people who claimed have seen aliens, UFOs or being abducted, receiving a visit from men in black and then recanting everything, suddenly saying nothing they said before was true
In those stories they were not the good guys, they were the villains, the silencers/enforcers of a government conspiracy. When I saw this movie in theaters, I was surprised how they turned those characters into the good guys.
It's always a pleasent surpise to see the two towers standing tall

I am SO glad you enjoyed this! MIB is one of my all time favorite franchises. I remember seeing this in the movies when it came out and people were literally crying laughing. Of course, all the effects were top notch for the time as well. Vincent D’Onofrio gave TLJ and Will Smith a run for their money for best freaking performance in this movie and that’s saying something because everyone killed it. I still laugh just as much today as all those years ago at this amazing actor playing an angry🪳
2 and 3 are both good, and 3 is gonna have you feeling some kind of way. Please continue! While you’re at it, more Will Smith too. I Am Legend is a fantastic movie that doesn’t get enough reactor love!

I saw this as a teen when it it hit the cinemas. Loved it then, loved it now even if the very prominent shots of the Twin Towers we get in this give me some sad moments watching it these days.

Tommy Lee Jones is a badass. He actually played in the famous Harvard beats Yale game back in the day, like top 10 college game of all time, and he was roommates with Al Gore. I remember Will saying he and a guy were playing some game of trying to barefoot kick a shoe into a trashcan 30 yards and Tommy just takes his off, places it on top is toes and kicks it into the trashcan like a boss. haha, If you ever get the chance you GOTTA watch him in the "Coal Miner's Daughter" film. Amazing film.
You should watch the 1984 movie Red Dawn it's got an all star cast Staring Patrick Swayze,Charlie Sheen,C.Thomas Howell,Darren Dalton,Jennifer Grey,and Lea Thompson. It's such a good movie

I was watching this movie yesterday. I would recommend watching 2 and 3.

You should definitely check out the original trilogy, this one is my favorite but their all good & they wrap things up in a really awesome way. Never seen the International one yet to be honest, but I haven't heard good things.

None of those other dress uniform fancy pants were ever in the running... Zed himself says 'ONE of you.' The others were just there to make Jay feel inferior and put pressure on him.
Jay passed each test with flying colors.
-The written test was bullcrap, the REAL test was a test of problem solving ability and situational judgement while under high pressure. Jay was the only one who thought to just move the damn table and use it, and kept his cool when his pencil broke... and just made the pencil work anyways without any outside help, showing he could autonomously operate and solve the myriad unexpected problems he might encounter in the field without constantly crying to base for help or real complaint. He was showing he could get the job done, purely by working with what he has on hand, and what he has around him, and zero additional support. Which are GOLD STAR qualities in an MIB agent.
-The shooting gallery was not a test of weapons capability, but of good judgement and rapid threat assessment while under pressure. The MIB deals with scary-looking aliens all the time, but those scary-looking aliens are, 90% of the time, harmless. Just regular (if freaky-looking) people looking to live quiet, happy lives.
So to just shoot every alien in sight was NOT the goal of the exercise... the MIB does NOT want an agent that just shoots every alien they see. It was to identify the one target amongst all the scary (but harmless) aliens around that is actually a threat by picking up on all the subtle cues, and to do so really fast and under pressure.
Jay's choice to ignore just shooting the obvious scary targets in favor of analyzing each to determine if they actually a threat (even if he shot Tiffany, whether that was right or wrong was not apparent... though it's implied he was RIGHT.) his thought process, and the fact it was so extensive in so short a time, for why he shot for what he shot was 100% EXACTLY what MIB looks for in an agent... someone who sees scary aliens... and then continues to look past the scary part to see if they're actually a THREAT. And not only that he showed the backbone to push back when he felt his superiors were wrong.
As Zed said, those other officers were all 'exactly what we've come to expect from years of government training', Zed was never even CONSIDERING them, they were all knee-jerk unimaginative order-obedient drones. The entire thing from start to finish was one big test for JAY, and he totally aced it.
The best part is you can see the moment the decision to recruit Jay was made visibly... when Zed tells the others they're taking an 'eye exam', as they walk out he subtly nods to Kay, telling him that Jay was in, and to take him aside and let him in on everything.

I'm shocked you knew that was Fisk. I saw this the year the movie came out. I've known the roach was Vincent only less than a year. Same for Full Metal Jacket and even Jurassic World. For me, his face just blends in. Believe it or not, I have the same problem with Beyonce. I have to ask my wife if that's her.

I was so frustrated with the test scene. Never understood why nobody just stood up and used the top of the chair, the wall, the tiny table next to each other, the floor. It truly triggered me.
