- First trip of the year! Went on a private trip with a small group of people with Channel Islands Expeditions on the Sunfish - a bigger boat than I'm used to but did mean having lots of room to move around.
Currently its Gray Whale season for this section of coast so many of these whales are migrating south to Mexico to the lagoons where they give birth and breed but a few have already been seen heading back north towards their feeding grounds in the Bering sea. We did see a couple in the distance but I didn't get any photos or videos of them this time.
We did, however, get to spend some time with both Coastal and Offshore Bottlenose Dolphins! The coastal Bottlenose dolphins we found almost as soon as we left the harbor as these bottlenose are known for staying fairly close to shore (and often play in the same waves as surfers). We only saw two of these particular dolphins. The offshores however were in a huge group! I've seen this volume of them before but never in such a tightly packed together group. Some little ones in the mix for sharper eyes.
For birds there were seagulls, California Pelicans and a surprising number of Surf Scoters which were hanging out on the back side of Anacapa Island. Surf Scoters are a sea duck that visit the coast during Winter. The males are the black ones with those bright white patches and vibrant oranges on their beak while the females are brown with smaller white patches.
