  • I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to meet a different group of Killer Whales than the ones before! This group (Eastern Tropical Pacific Orcas) are known to roam the tropical waters of Mexico and Central America but they were making a rare visit up into southern California for about a month.
ETPs are well known for being more friendly and dolphin-like in their behavior with boats as they eagerly bow ride the front and even play/ride in the wake of the boat. This is not a behavior you'll see from most other Killer whales though some individuals (such as the Biggs group known as the CA51s) differ.
There was a total of about 10 individuals in the area though they often spent time as two separate groups while they hunted whale calves and dolphins. Much like the Biggs Killer whales, ETPs will hunt marine mammals though they are opportunistic hunters overall.
These clips were all taken on a whale watching boat (Pacific Offshore Expeditions) with responsible captains and crew. Please be respectful and tip your crew if you go.
Filmed with a Gopro Hero 11.
