- We tow with our GX460 a 19 foot Geo Pro Rockwood trailer to the Mackinaw area of Michigan and provide our thoughts and feedback regarding how the GX460 performed towing an estimated 5600 pounds in total estimated. Trailer weight is 4865 pounds empty total, plus myself, Theresa and Piper and extra gear. 15 MPG is achievable at 65 MPH in a GX460.

THanks for sharing, that lines up with what i would expect. I would get 10-13 mpg towing our 4400lb trailer. We towed through hwy 50 Nevada and grand canyon area. Best advice, get an aftermarket transmission oil cooler absolute must to keep from killing your transmission. Also, forget about 5th and 6th gear and keep the rpms under 3k. As mentioned in other comments. sport mode, 4th gear. Adding a brake controller should go without saying but add a break controller too.
We tow a camper with our 2010 GX and we found if you leave it in Sport mode (4-Speed) it pulls without the constant downshifts. I am getting a K&N filter tomorrow. Thanks for that tip.
Anytime 👍 we are pulling again Saturday to the Michigan Sand Dunes. The K&N makes a difference
Be advised, K&N allows more flow, but there's no free lunch in fluids. Less drag on the airstream is less filtering.
Do you think the GX460 will be capable of towing another car that's 3,500lbs on a trailer? Love the 7 seater on the GX460 and the reliability of it. Looking at this and the BMW X5 for towing a car.
As long as you do not exceed 6500 pounds towing with a brake controller you should be fine. We would pick the GX460 over the X5 any day. Be warned of expensive future BMW repairs.
Thanks for sharing. We have nearly the same setup, i.e. a 2023 GX and a Geo Pro TT. I heard a lot good things about the GX and I also own a RX and a few other Lexus/Toyotas in the past. However my experience of towing for the last few months is not on par with my experiences with my Mercedes ML350. Firstly, the trailer feedback is much noticeable when the road is not so even. This could be due to its relative short wheelbase or lack of airbag suspension? Secondly, even with the V8, the GX downshifts a lot while driving up small hills or highway overpasses. That was a surprise to me. The MPG is not bad around 12 miles. In hindsight I would not recommend the GX for towing a TT. Daily driving is quite nice though.
Am hearing to manual shift with GX when towing and keep in 4th when prudent Thanks, Terry
Glad you mentioned air bags, that puts my mind at ease. I'd figure KDSS would be enough.
Thanks for the video. First off you said it. This trailer is a tad to heavy for a GX especially if you live in mountainous areas. Not to be rude but a cannot believe you drove this trailer without a brake controller thats crazy. I went with a red arc its awesome and very slick install. My off road Trailer Marker is 3,800 lbs loaded and i didn’t even considered towing until i installed the brake controller. Maybe do to your short trailer tounge A frame but your safety chains looked short.
My 2023 gx luxury with Off-Road package was awesome towing on and off road. Having the auto leveling air system in rear made a level ride and came in handy off road. The rock crawl figure was nice on steep decents. Also BFG ko2s stiffined up cornoring with trailer. My gas mileage is more like 13mpg but lots of mountain passes.
Always drive in manual gear 4 when towing. Would not recommend cruise control
65 mph in 4th with a trailer please re-confirm
We do have a plug in external blue tooth brake controller you can see it at the start of the video. That said it is a huge trick to get it stay plugged in. Thanks for your advice appreciated.
@@OnDownTheRoadProductions yes sir .
@OnDownTheRoadProductions sorry I missed that
Looking at getting a gx. Currently pulling my 3300 pound clipper with my 06 tacoma. It's OK but it's also 2wd. I see a lot of folks using the gx over the 4runner so this where my research is going. Nice vid thx. Suggest brake rotor upgrade. I have drums on the rear and got pads/rotors for towing. Helped lots
Right on
Now is the time to buy a real gx before they go gay. I bought a new 2023 this past week for over $8000 off msrp.
Nice Video I plan on going to Berea this coming Saturday 7/8
Hello CSX 20/80 for us 7/8 TBD keep us in loop on next trip Terry
👍
I've got the same GX Luxury, same hitch, and a 20BH Geo Pro... living down on the Gulf Coast. I towed the Geo with my wife's Sequoia, but man that air suspension in the GX eats up some bumps. The air suspension does create some issues with the weight distribution. I set it up per the manufacturers specs, and the bars float on an even surface. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Are you using a weight distribution hitch?
Glad to read you did use a brake controller.
We need a better one
My 2013 f150 ecoboost towing just a 6x12 enclosed got 7.8 mpg cross country but I was going faster. Usually most gas vehicles you can expect HALF mpg of what you normally get towing
If you had had a V8 loaded would have posted higher mpg under load guaranteed. Engine size does not equate to fuel economy in a truck the way people normally use a truck.
Did you leave it in D or dropped a gear for towing?
We left in D, no manual shifting
That is a great informative video! What kind of anti-sway hitch are you using and what helped your decision to pick that hitch? Thank you!
It's a recurve. Great setup that doesn't need to be taken off before backing up. I have one on mine.
Glad it was helpful! EAZ Lift
You should use timbren bump stop to help sag less.
Thank you I will look into one
It’s what I use, we have same distribution hitch. But added timbren to help sag less
Does trans have a tow mode ?
Hi Pat, no tow mode, you can manually shift there is also a sway warning indicator
How would this do towing 2500 lbs daily for and enclosed trailer?
Just fine
