I have never seen the Crown Jewels of Scotland, never really thought about it them having ceremonial Honors separate from England before. This crown is beautiful with out being over the top. I guess I need to research more, as James II of Scotland in my 15th great grandfather.
How interesting Allan. There is something arresting about this crown. Simple yet full of a meaning that was fully understood by the late Queen. And the green cushion was an excellent touch of course.

To my mind, it would not be unusual: the Royal Standard of Scotland was always flown in Scotland during life when the monarch was in residence there. It would have been a real faux-pas to use the non-Scottish one. The Royal arms of Scotland also appear on buildings in many places in Ballater near Balmoral where local shops display them to indicate that they are "By Royal Appointment".

This is such an exquisite crown. I had never seen it before, or pictures of it, until it was resting on the late Queen's coffin in Scotland, and I immediately thought that it is finer work and more beautiful than the Imperial State Crown of England. I really hope that His Majesty the King chooses to wear this at some point during his coronation ceremonies. Since Charles II was the last to wear it, Charles III would be a most fitting recipient. I'm sure he must appreciate the workmanship with his artistic eye, and like beloved Queen Elizabeth II, is fully aware of it's significance. Of course, being South African, I don't know how the Scots would feel about that, but how lovely the crown is, and how lovely it would be to see it worn. The Fleurs de Lis and the crosses are in the exact opposite places to the English crown, and they are very finely engraved/cast. I didn't realise that there was Robert de Bruce's blood in the current royal line. How very interesting! My great grandfather on my father's mother's side was Scottish. Although I'm a royalist, I was brought up to venerate Robert de Bruce as well, and was very interested to see his grave in the Cathedral on the coverage of the Queen's lying in state. I was also very interested to see that the Fleurs de Lis are in the Scottish crown. So, according to what I know, I may be wrong, there is also the Christ Bloodline in the Scottish crown? According to Cathar stories, I do believe. I may be wrong!
The Scottish crown will play no part in the coronation as it cannot leave the country. Scotland has followed the tradition of the other European monarchies, (of which Scotland is the oldest) where the monarch no longer wears the crown. The English Royal Family died out in 1603 and the Scottish Royal Family took over the English throne so the present King is decended from King Robert I.

Yes, a surprising amount is to be found, though it is no longer economic to mine. In Wales gold was mined from Roman times and the royal family have a supply of it which is used to make wedding rings.
Hello, Dr. Barton. King Charles III participated in a coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey. I was able to watch it online, and get a copy of the order of service. Later, the Church of Scotland offered its service for the king in Edinburgh. In the US, the online version of the ceremony was blocked. Elsewhere on RUclips is a Pathe newsreel of the Queen's visit on that occasion. During the singing of the National Anthem you can see a white-haired figure partly concealed to the right of the altar/communion table doing something with his hands. I wondered if it was Cursiter making his preliminary sketch. There are various stories about his views on the Queen wearing normal day dress for the occasion instead of something more elaborate. How accurate these are or how exaggerated by those with a Nationalist grievance to nurture I don't know.

Many felt it was an insult and that she could have worn something more regal looking befitting her station. None of the Royal Mail Boxes in Scotland had E11R on them. If memory serves me right, they tried it and some got blown up. The Queen was not recognized as Elizabeth the second, there never had been an Elizabeth the first, so they gave up and the mail boxes in Scotland just had ER on them. They will eventually be changed for Charles.

Fluer-de-lis are found in many crowns and has nothing to do with claiming the French throne.. The crown of Tonga has them and they certainly don't claim the French throne.
The fleur-de-lys is a symbol of purity and of the Blessed Virgin Mary - the alternating crosses and fleur-de-lys are emblematic of Christ and Mary's blessing upon the sovereign's rule.

Yes, this is the ancient crown of Scotland with the red cap, the one with the purple on is the Imperial state crown- essentially that of England, but now representing the Union.
When the Queen was lying in state in Edinburgh, the Scottish Crown lay on her coffin on a green cushion. For her lying in state and funeral in England, it was the English/British Imperial State Crown on a purple cushion. Same Queen, two different occasions and two different crowns.
@@allangibson8494 Yes, that's right: and the same for the orb and sceptre. I was more concerned that the orb might just roll off and away. They didn't do that for the Scottish crown which explains why it was only on the coffin when it wasn't being moved. The Imperial State Crown was very accident-prone: at the State Opening of Parliament in 1845, the Duke of Argyll let it slip off its cushion in procession and Queen Victoria wrote "it was all crushed and squashed like a pudding that had sat down" (whatever that means). No wonder that crown was retired after the mishap at George V's funeral!
I was told by a Scot that Charles has no role in the parliament and yet went there to lord it over MSPs by sitting on the speakers podium with his wife and used his mother’s death as a power play to send a message to Scotland. That there was no transfer of power that took place and it was unconstitutional for him to sit either side of the speakers podium with his wife. Even Elizabeth when she went to parliament would sit below the speakers podium and in a guest chair. Any Scottish citizens able to shed light on this?
You were told wrong. As King of Scots he will open the Parliament and he will sit where his mother sat. On this occasion he was invited by the Scottish Government to hear tributes to the late Queen and that is why he sat on the podium.
Queen Elizabeth opened the Scottish Parliament ten times during her reign. Was she "lording" (or "ladying"?) it over the MSPs? If it was inconstututional for her to do so, you would have thought someone would have mentioned it at the time?

The first time any royal funeral has happened in Scotland since the mid sixteenth century so lots of new precedents set. It was fascinating to watch.

Officially, it is 'too delicate'.
It is old and delicate, also with the union of the two crowns it became redundant when James VI of Scotland became James I. He never returned.

Mary Queen of Scots was married to Francis and spent years in France..
Fleur de Lis is a French/ Italian symbol

I'm a little confused: the crown 👑 I see on the Queen's coffin is purple. Is this an old picture of someone else's coffin? Or did they switch crowns when the Queen was moved to England? 🇬🇧
Yes, this is the ancient crown of Scotland with the red cap, the one with the purple on is the Imperial state crown- essentially that of England, but now representing the Union.
When the Queen was lying in state in Edinburgh, the Scottish Crown lay on her coffin on a green cushion. For her lying in state and funeral in England, it was the English/British Imperial State Crown on a purple cushion. Same Queen, two different occasions and two different crowns.
Also two different positions for the crown: in Scotland, over her head; in England, placed at the centre of the top of the coffin.
@@MrBulky992 Actually the imperial state crown was bolted to the coffin for the funeral (after it fell off her grandfather’s coffin).
@@allangibson8494 Yes, that's right: and the same for the orb and sceptre. I was more concerned that the orb might just roll off and away. They didn't do that for the Scottish crown which explains why it was only on the coffin when it wasn't being moved.
The Imperial State Crown was very accident-prone: at the State Opening of Parliament in 1845, the Duke of Argyll let it slip off its cushion in procession and Queen Victoria wrote "it was all crushed and squashed like a pudding that had sat down" (whatever that means). No wonder that crown was retired after the mishap at George V's funeral!

I was told by a Scot that Charles has no role in the parliament and yet went there to lord it over MSPs by sitting on the speakers podium with his wife and used his mother’s death as a power play to send a message to Scotland. That there was no transfer of power that took place and it was unconstitutional for him to sit either side of the speakers podium with his wife. Even Elizabeth when she went to parliament would sit below the speakers podium and in a guest chair. Any Scottish citizens able to shed light on this?

You were told wrong. As King of Scots he will open the Parliament and he will sit where his mother sat. On this occasion he was invited by the Scottish Government to hear tributes to the late Queen and that is why he sat on the podium.
Queen Elizabeth opened the Scottish Parliament ten times during her reign. Was she "lording" (or "ladying"?) it over the MSPs? If it was inconstututional for her to do so, you would have thought someone would have mentioned it at the time?
