Here is an idea some in my DnD group find plausible: wizards have such outlandish hats and clothes and accessories because what they're doing is *wearing* many of their non-perishable spell components such as copper wires, lodestones, various gemstones, pearls, fleece, feathers, etc.
I think the most natural form of magic is ritual magic. Keep in mind you don't need spell slots to ritual cast so a big bar has been lowered to be able to cast magic if you are ritual casting. My thinking is most magic is still very ritualized. That you can't get away from this. But you can internalize it. This is what spell slots allow. Instead of a long, external ritual to perform the magic you are doing an abbreviated version where the load of the ritual is put on the mage. They use their own mental fortitude and spiritual power to perform those critical aspects within themselves so they can get away with a faster casting. This, of course, puts a big burden on the mage. A burden that would be carried by the world itself if it was cast in what is seen as ritual magic. It is a trade off. The mage takes the burden unto themselves so to achieve faster casting times. But obviously there are still a lot of extra things a wizard has to do. He has components that resonate with the frequency they wish to invoke. They have gestures to help with the accuracy of their directions. Words to gives the magic the direction it needs to perform the task. So why not their garb is also part of this whole thing in some way? Wearing charms and bangles that aid in getting the right magically wavelength caught up in your casting. But integrated in a way that seems nothing more than bizzare fashion sense.
Theoretical mathematics, collectible card games, chess, philosophers, wine tasters, bibliophiles, and role-players? Wait a minute... ...So what your basically saying is that... ....Wizards are GIANT NEEEERRRRRRRRDS!! Great work AJ, I always look forwards to your videos. Keep on being awesome!
I remember when the first edition players hand book came out in 1977. There actually two types pf spell books. One being their Main spell books these would have every spell the Wizard had collected over their years of study or adventuring. The other type was known as a field spell book. These are what they would take with them when adventuring. Any new spells went into these until they had a chance to place these spell into their more permanent spell books. Of course the younger the practitioner the more likely he or she only has the latter spell books. I really like your video. You have taken a great deal of time to research this information. How long have been playing DnD. I actually started playing in 1976, the game had only been in print for two years at that time under TSR.
Part two will go into detail on the various types of wizard (Enchanters, Evokers, Abjurers, Summoners, Necromancers, etc) and how to handle Wizard Duels!
Duels between wizards, like disputes among scientists in our contemporary perceptual reality, are long, drawn out, passive aggressive anti spectacles with direct address being seldom and even then typically frought with palpable nervous tensions.
Just fantastic as always. Thank you for the huge perspective on the weird paradigm that wizard's live in, especially toward the end of the video when you talk about the academy and the "otherness" that even a young wizard would encapsulate after their experiences. That alone flooded me with ideas for encounters, NPCs, voices and quirks!
I really loved this commentary on wizards, magic, culture, society, ecology, academia & etc. I'm jumping straight to part two... people like you keep true roleplaying alive! I've ran into people, recently, that don't have a grasp on RP except from video games... it is a very different system and I'm saddened that I haven't found any folks that know, "The plays the thing."
You are not alone, and I am somewhat amazed, but very appreciative of your attention, if I spark an urge in people to get into the hobby for the first time, or get back into it again, I would consider that a tremendous success. :)
Well that was the old, original concept, just thought it was interesting to bring it up, as perhaps not many people have read those original dragon magazines.
Thank you for being the first guy to bring up my favorite backdrop stock-character "your friendly neighborhood talismonger"! They can add so much flavor to a campaign, and can hire characters to acquire rare materials!
I like to think that when a Wizard is casting a spell they manifest magical circles, like what Doctor Strange does. These circles act as a mathematical formula to tap into the weave of magic, draw upon its power, shape it, then manifest it into reality. Each school of magic has a basic outline for that school, but within that outline is a complex formula designed to do a specific spell. That's one of the reasons why Wizards have to prepare spells each day, it's cause they have to memorize the exact formula of the spell otherwise it may not work or worse backfire on them. Example: When Sephiroth uses his Super Nova spell he recites an equation that 1) creates a pocket dimension similar to the solar system, 2) transports his target inside the pocket dimension, 3) causes the sun to explode destroying the system within the pocket dimension and hopefully his targets as well
At three minutes into the vid, I'm already hyped by the descriptions of how Wizards interact. Makes so much sense, now I know WHY the big spells are named. :)
Good video. I think that one of the aspects has really made me think about the magic of D&D is comparing the magic users, and what the stat for their spellcasting ability says about how their magic works. Clerics, Druids, and Rangers are wisdom which gives an awareness of of surroundings, thu is them connecting to such forces. Bards, Paladins, sorcerers, and Warlock have charisma, which is the ability to take how you are feeling and show it on the outside, thus it is variations of imposing magic on that will. While wizards are intelligent, the ability to recall information and make mental connections, and thus I think wizards about the understanding of the reality through memorising formulae, for which their spellbooks are notes on. It kind of gives this feeling entirely being about memory and memorization of the formulae and with them ingredients, and I connect it to my own time studying. But then I kind of look at something like the hag, essentially a witch, which has maybe some aspects I think of Wizard, but with charisma there can be more to it then just memorising. Which is to say that I like the warlock who might appear quite similar, but feels rather than memorises, kind of like how I got through university but was really bad at memorizing, and had a different perception of the topics of being able to understand in a way more than recounting a formulae. Which hard to explain, but I think wizards could be kept back by some of the whole nature of magic by what fits within formulae and can make them sort of stubborn, trying to quantify everything into kind of simple terms which might have flaw. Perhaps these causing problems when a wild card is added, like how the far realm is indescribable to normal logic.
Yes, the far realm is mainly psychic in nature, that is one of the main themes of it, so, you can see how the far realm would tempt a wizard, with the promise of bridging the gaps in understanding, providing the precognitive and intuitive leaps to greater avenues of arcane power, navigating the mechanics of the cosmos by feel, rather than wrote formula... but.. how awesomely dangerous and corrupting the far realm is, we know full well. *Beware, young apprentice, the prismatic dimensions of the outer reach, the far flung vibrational planes of discordant mind.. through them you may indeed gain rapid ascent to power, but with a shattered mind, and mutated body. *
I am not sure if it is connected lore wise, but Nothic is supposed to be a wizard inflicted with a curse by certain knowledge. Or maybe the reliance on incomplete knowledge create a glitch that makes an aberration like a gibbering mouther, or mimic. They get so caught up in their theories, that like some of their strange habits it can become detached from their normal reality. Which maybe Modrone are supposed to keep in check, their march being like a system update for reality of what wizards might observe and create.
thnx for that video. i love playing wizards in dnd and this gave me a much better insight into role playing ideas than i've ever had before. can't wait for the next one.
eschew matherials Complete Arcane has rules for using and mastering foreign spell books, that said having read dragon lance books it seems that the order of the hishssorcery seems to be the exceptions that they use language of magic, noations and shorthand and any wizard can pick up any spellbook and use it.
I never knew the in game idea behind the plusses of magic items. So incredibly fascinating. Thank you for another bit of obscure knowledge to wow my players with.
I once ran a sorcerer in the Forgotten realms Faerûn named Alban McRuddley, He was a professor of Magical History at the mage college of "Aronia" I loved hearing you talk about the different kinds of professions wizards would have. In my campaign Alban gained proficiency in checks related to his subject at the college such as History and knowledge arcana if there are to be more videos about these wizards I would love to hear your ideas of certain proficiencies gained due to there certain jobs.
When it came to spell components I always liked using two different mechanics. One was the idea of spell slots the number of which was determined both by the level of the magic-user, and the user's intelligence stat which I normally called battle-casting. This would be literally a slot used by the magic-user to maintain a spell they had cast to within on gesture in the earlier part of the day, and could release by finishing the desired gesture, but which also had their potential power slowly erode over the course of the day thus needing to be redone each day. Than you have the typical spell-casting of incantations an components that would unleash the power of the spell in it's fullest extent after doing the needed things, but which uses the spell casting time aspect unlike the idea of pre-casting the spell an applying it to one of the spell slots. Also i see the items a magic-user carried from their spell-book, to the staffs an trinkets as items they might actually use to store the energy of the spells they had cast earlier in the day preemptively, and then using a gesture to release that energy of that readied spell when it was needed. There would be other things like formulas, theories, and even studies into ancient or new spells that might be hidden in the items as well. I also quite loved the idea of spirit casters like in the Record of Lodoss wars series, in which a caster makes a pact with a spirit of some kind (various kinds could be created), and that spirit could be contacted an used almost as a controlled ally thru using their innate abilities. Than you also have in my opinion one fo the best non-typical mage concepts in the form of the Tech-mages of Babylon five, who literally use technology to create the illusions an effects that many would call magic.
Lurv how you got a different intro tune each time matching the topic for these, its' so spot on practically every time also dunno how ya do it. All in all it's bretty gr8 m8
Hello A.J. Pickett, you can get some good information on Abjurers and the school of Abjuration as well as their benefits and restrictions in 2nd edition Complete Wizards Handbook it also has over a dozen wizard kits that you can introduce in a campaign as well such as the witch,The Acadamian,The Peasant Wizard, the Militant Wizard as well as the Wu-Jen from Oriental Adventures.....lots of hours of adventure from that one little book! It's almost like.....magic! Lolx2 cheers m8 thanks for the ideas!
on the point of a +4 sword, so lets say you obtain 4 steel ingots from different planes each are much the same but lets say they have varying radioactive characteristics. it would still be a simple matter of forge welding the four together and make the resulting item similar to damascus steel
I should point out this was the original concept of magic bonus points, but I would not put much thought into it these days, I just considered it an interesting bit of historic trivia.
@@immortalwolf3055 still when it comes to Lower Plane Fiends, that can only be harmed by good align weapons. Going to Lawful Good " Seven Heavens," to cold forge out an iron sword, weapon to lay the Smack Down on a demon from the Abyss couldn't hurt the maker to much.
I know what you mean about that special tension when you say "fireball" at your table 😁 I've conditioned my group to produce that result when I say "fire", "flame" or "burn". I played a pyromaniacal sorcerer once. They'll never forget that, as long as we all live
Highly appreciated. I have always had a knowledge of the arcane, but my preference has always led me to the divine and psionic route. I would love to learn more! I know the basics such as the schools, what each of the schools does and so on, but I am more so particularly "in the blue" about the processes behind the usage of the arcane. I have done some deep research, even finding out about archaic, Draconic, and all those relative terms, but there just seems to be a disconnect in how it is different fundamentally from things such as the divine by anything other than origin.
Would be a godsend. I play D&D rarely, but I do multiversal roleplay and I have for the last 20 years. D&D is one of the bases for validity because it is more developed in the concepts as opposed to a modern day anime. With that, I have devoted an unmeasured amount of time to my studies of lore and how the things work beyond just game mechanics, which is why it is so important to me.
there are a few things rarely tought off that I could see in a magical school, all of which synergising with each others : Sensory deprivations baths used to meditate in, to help focus the mind especially useful when one try to expend senses Performance-enhancing drugs, often magical or alchemical, essentially potions that do not have a statblock because they are not useful for adventurers Brain-enhancing transmutations scrolls, or wizards Enchenters mental guides that help with meditation. Maybe a big part of what made enchantment it's own school is that it is used by wizard to expand the capabilities of their minds. They would help with the students meditating in the baths. The idea is that since wizard rely so much on intelligence, they use magical means of improve their intelligence to superhuman levels. the brains of long-dead wizard preserved through necromantic means in jars, able to create psychic projections of said wizards. Said projections are often used as assistants tutors, or guides when reading texts written by said wizards during their life. Care have to be observed when using those magic holocrons as they may attempt to possess the users....
If these are what ypu seek then I advise you to read Jack Vance's " The Dying Earth" series and the rest of his works. In a world so far into the future the sun is almost dead, wizards seek to find a way to preserve the human race, or just mess with stuff. It's got everything you mentioned: Spirits the size of a thumb that play a concordant melody that invigorates the minds of whoever here them, A wine that when Drank elevates all senses to the magnificence of the Upper Realms so the drinker may comprehend greater infinities, Chambers that dilute the passage of time and space so one may meditate for eons in a single day. It fits DnD amazing, which is fairly obvious when you realise that it's the main inspiration Gygax took and used for Wizards in DnD. Vancian Magic (spellslots) comes from the author, the way spells are named are also from Vance: "Mordecainan's Magnificent Mansion" compared to "Phandells Discriminating Barrier" Some spells and items are pure expys from his work: "The Excellent Prismatic Spray" and of course "Ioun Stones". Try it out, it's got the best wizards in fiction in my opinion.
I like to borrow a little from the Discworld series by saying that in many spells an arcane magic users do are not so much creating things as drawing them forth from another dimension. This means places where there ha been very extensive magic use will have weaken walls of reality, spells are stronger, occasionally creatures from other planes will turn up either by their own will or completely by accident, random spells and magical effects will go off ect.
Actually that is perfectly in tune with the situations of the D&D realms, in the case of Forgotten Realms, the Dawn War and how reality got messed up, almost broken on two occasions.. the incursion of the Far Realm when the living gate was smashed, and when Tharizdun used the shard of evil to create the Abyss, which was a calamity for (at least) 666 different dimensions.. so yes, reality is most assuredly weakened in the D&D world, and the bicycle\octopus terrors lurk on the borders, going 'scratch scratch scratch' :D
Interesting idea of +X Weapons. Never heard that before (mainly from lack of personal research. X3) Funnily enough, though, I'm playing a Fighter character in Pathfinder who's become capable of crafting magic weapons and armor despite a total lack of internal magic or magical knowledge. And we interpret her crafting, say, a simple +X sword as making the blade, then meditating with it for the crafting time, intensely focusing her mind into the blade, the metal, the shape, and imparting her force of will, martial understanding, and spiritual energy into the piece. And the effect comes from it resonating on multiple quantum levels simultaneously, in sort of the same effect of materials from multiple planes. It harmonizes with those planes, instead.
I have been pretty impressed so far with 5th edition including stat listings for NPC classes, and I have included them in my game with ease, so yeah, I plan on doing more of these type of vids.
are you going to do this on every class? Excited to hear Ranger and Warlock as they are my favorite classes. Double excited to hear druid because I can never quite understand, from a roleplay perspective, why the druid in the party... is in the party.
I had a half orc wizard, (yest I like odd characters, & the hp for cross classing as a Barbarian helps,) who kept his spell book as tattoos on his arms in orcish runes. When you say Wizard academy I can't help think of Terry Pratchett's Unseen University on Discworld.
Wait, you had one page worth of room on his arms for pages worth of writing equal to the combined spell levels of all known spells plus 1 page worth for each cantrip?
Substituting Labrador for Bloodhound fur will just result in cuter, more snuggly spell effects. 🤗 Locate Creature would lead you to a dog park where a goodest boy is waiting to _git da' ball._ 🥰
You know, the way you described the living situation and interactions between apprentices as fodder for a young adult novel gives me many ideas. Wizard harem anime anyone?
Definitely Subbed, love D&D lore and want to see a actual Dungeons & Dragons open world role-playing game. We finally got the Harry Potter rpg now D&D and Star Wars got to give us a open world rpg.
great vid as always. two questions 1. how do you feel about the use of colored robes to denote rank or school 2 have you thought about doing the nothic might flow well from the wizard discussion
Yes, the monsters after the wizard vids will have a magical theme to them. :)And robes.. well, personally no, I don't play them like that, except the wizards of Thay and Hobgoblin warcasters like to wear red.
Love this channel! Had an idea for a “Wand Slinger” and would appreciate assistance and ideas for character creation. Basically I am thinking something like an Arcane Archer and Gun Slinger. Obviously it would have some wizard schooling, item creation (?), and feats that help it along too.
I play with 3.5e rules , DMG: Magic Traps, feat: create wondrous item. cost 50gp x caster level x10xp, " Fire Ball trap" caster: 6th= 300gp+60xp for one time use. continuous use cost: 500gp x caster level x 100xp = 3,000gp+600xp "and never runs out of charges." My game shops run with, F! the gp and pay for it with XP. " That witch , I saw her carve a little wooden mouse right in front of my eyes ! Now I can't get rid of the mice in my house !" Honestly how are you going to carve a wooden Master Work spoon or toy mouse ? ! We ran a Harry Potter game by creating magic trap wands.
Imagine a buff (for a wizard) wizard who uses a magic anvil as his spell book, carries a smiting hammer, and loves making magic items of all sorts, from books, jewelry and toys, to armor weapons and staffs. Just give his hammer electric properties, blond hair and a beard, and mage hand and call him Thor!
so, if i have a +2 hammer, the hammer would have steel from this plane of existence, material from a layer of hell and a material from like limbo or somethin'? that sound cool
Hounds shed a lot so honestly a single blood hound would be plenty for a small town apothecary and larger ones might have a breeder nearby who brushes their dogs regularly to sell it as spell components as a side hustle in addition to selling the puppies. For hummingbird feathers there’s a course killing the poor birds but I’m sure some druids, Bird folk, fairies or elementals from the plane of air would make excellent bird keepers who would be able to take the feathers away from the nest without harming the bird.
3.5e DMG: Creating Magic Trap Items; feat: create wondrous item. I hated " spell components " and other exotic materials to craft magic items. " How do you create a Master Work Spoon ? Or a Staff ?" Trade out 99% of gp value of said item and pay the full difrence with the spell caster XP. DMG: Variant rules for learning Feats and Skills. d20 Star Wars 3.5e, Break down the Soldier class starting feats and save and you get close to four months of training to get a 1st-level starting Star Wars Soldier. Just nearly the average time to train a "soldier" in Real Life. In Real Life people 'just' gain XP but they don't take the time to do anything with it. Like train to do something ! Long story short, just pay 5xp X caster level X spell level for effect. 6th-level wizard cast Fire Ball spell. cost: 6 caster levels x 3rd-level spell x5= 180xp. Scribe Scroll or Magic item trap, one time use cost. My game shop just have ever spell caster make stander Spellcraft checks DC:10+ spell level to cast a spell. When they play AD&D2e, you have to roll under the wizard Int score. The group also plays World of Darkness: Vampire & Mage, so they like to try to power game everything. All depends on what type of play your DM, or game shop runs it campaign setting. a.) All characters Must take Down Time to learn Skills, Feats, and save bonuses. That is time lag that can be measure in weeks to months in the campaign setting. i.) Play back up characters. b.) Mile Stone, play it as a story base game. Gain XP after each Chapter of Story Plot. c.) It is a Table Top Video Game, make the kills then just advance in level. So a guy in their 20's is a 25th-level epic multi class character while a 54 yo is still only a 13th-level fighter. Spell components a.) natural stander b.) fresh vs dry, what time of the year are they used for normal or add special spell effect. c.) special with natural Meta Magic effects. d.) the spell component has been empower through spell use. i.) does the caster Has to drink more than Two potions to cast a given spell for the effect to set in ? Such as drink a Strength potion to gain combat abilities from a 6th-level arcane spell ? e.) Some of the DM campaign I played in can be real pricks to the spell caster in the game. i.) collect a wild rose from the Elemental Plane of Fire to cast a 2nd-level spell. x.) your wizard has to Plane Shift, with Elemental Fire Protection, combine layer four to six spells with Polymorph Other to transmute a normal 'wild rose,' so it can grow Wild on the Plane of Fire for a few years. All of this can be done by a 12th-level wizard. Effect: the Wild Rose of Elemental Fire will naturally Maximize Spell feat all fire base spells . xx.) how much will this rose cost and how much is it safe to use ?
Feist is mine. was reading his books before i'd ever heard of the lord of the rings. and the computer game betrayal at krondor (based on his book krondor: the betrayal) was my fist step into fantasy. Eddings is OK too I suppose :P (jks, read most of his books) good stuff
"Hey, this scroll doesn't work the way I intended it to, could you take a look at it?" "Looks like you forgot a transmutation sigil here..." "Ah shit, how did I miss that?" "Also these incantations can be written in a more compact way if you write it circled around a pentacle"
Ooooooh you just reminded me of the anecdote I have to include in the next video, about the magically addictive onion dip, the bar run by Goblin barmaid 'Krandy", the extradimensional treasure trunk and the 24 hour apprentice rave party in the basement with illusionary light show... that mini campaign was hilarious!
Less specific than a wizard school, an arcane school where you could have the arcane magic users study and have more potential for complete parties. The arcane trickster, eldritch knight, arcane cleric, and sorcerers all together. Or is this more of a university type with several different schools on one campus. Have you done videos on the difference between the different sources of magic, divine, bard, etc?
Joshua Pittman no just getting my toe in the water for classes. Also, these comments and questions are a great help in guiding my talking points for part two (and maybe part three), breaking format and including feedback from you and other viewers. So yes, I can talk about ways these organizations are configured, sure.
AJ Pickett are you going to get into why a wizard would want to restrict spells (I'm pretty sure invokes can't cast disguise self) just think if the potential of the wizard
University type place with several different schools on one campus. For " adults." a.) arcane trickster: rogue/ thief," Harry Potter & friends" may have open a few 'locks' but it didn't show the students training to Pick locks by hand. b.) eldritch knight: that is more like a multi class fighter/ wizard maybe sorcerer with a prestige class. 3.5e rules, True Strike: grants +20 to hit insight bonus on next attack roll, follow with the feat Power Attack. i.) Harry Potter Hogworths school didn't show any melee training.
I as a DM still allow the use of extra dimensional metals from the outer Realms to forge Masterwork weapons with natural enchantments and bonuses however I place certain restrictions on it for example you couldn't Forge material from the plane of limbo with material from the plane of mechanist there too opposing ideologies and principles and this is reflected in the material that even makes up the realm this keeps people from getting an ungodly powerful weapon but secretly there is a way and it involves outworld sigil and the spire and materials gained from there one thing I would do if I was in an adventure that took me to the Great Wheel outer realms I would collect spools of metal specifically iron cable or steel cord preferably steel cord imagine taking steel cord from around Great Wheel combining it with steel cord made from the metal of outworld forged buy the greatest blacksmith of all of sigil you would then have a weapon capable of bringing death to any creature except for maybe the lady of pain, the Mad God, and of course AO but all other beings would probably meet their end to a weapon produced in such a way in fact if anybody figured out what you were doing you would probably get killed before you completed it
The utimate low power cantrip is: Bigby's Insulting Finger (BIF) BIF can be cast by anyone, regardless of class, intelligence or wisdom. Actually, low wisdom makes it more likely for someone to cast it at times when it is ill advised...
Of course it is the insulting digit raised aggressively. Casting is instant, but can be maintained indefinitely with concentration. Requires only somatic, but can have verbal and material additions. It is possible to cast this even if restrained.
I like to think the spell components works in a similar way to alchemy in The Witcher 2, it is not that exact component that makes the spell works but the active ingredient or the product of enzymes artificial or natural. For example a hellhound tail component may contain a particular substance also found in the modification of boiled troll's blood. Making it 'cheaper' (comparing the former with trolls blood) to obtain, but only with much research and experimentation. Otherwise many spells would be very expen$ive to cast in daily basis like we see on games.
Well, not all components are consumed. That is more of a higher level magic thing. For lots of lower level spells just having the component is enough. Think of it as a focus. Having it lets you tap into the correct energies to produce that effort. Which may explain why some do consume the item. It draws the power directly from it.
Well I guess if the spell is not fussy because as a single crystal breaking diamond is quite difficult but I guess if the spell works with a lot of really small single crystal diamonds then it is fine.
Also at 11:00 I can roughly assume he is talking about somebody named "Ed Greenwood" but I'm having difficulty finding any literature that goes by "magical tomes of note." Likely this is a part of a larger magazine or similar work so I would need to know what magazine they where published in to pursue them further.
Here is an idea some in my DnD group find plausible: wizards have such outlandish hats and clothes and accessories because what they're doing is *wearing* many of their non-perishable spell components such as copper wires, lodestones, various gemstones, pearls, fleece, feathers, etc.

yeah, I learn so much from your videos. Like the +1 magic weapons... how have not heard of that...?
Well that was the old, original concept, just thought it was interesting to bring it up, as perhaps not many people have read those original dragon magazines.

Example: When Sephiroth uses his Super Nova spell he recites an equation that 1) creates a pocket dimension similar to the solar system, 2) transports his target inside the pocket dimension, 3) causes the sun to explode destroying the system within the pocket dimension and hopefully his targets as well
Quite a few anime do this too. First one that comes to mind is Overlord.
I gotta say, it must be amazing having you as a DM.
results may vary
I mean, I would kill many a creature for a DM as knowledgeable and experienced.
"make a dex save"
Exceptionally well done video. Well thought out and rationalized. I really like seeing you pop up on my phone. Thanks again.
eschew matherials Complete Arcane has rules for using and mastering foreign spell books, that said having read dragon lance books it seems that the order of the hishssorcery seems to be the exceptions that they use language of magic, noations and shorthand and any wizard can pick up any spellbook and use it.
One of the first " cantrips" a wizard learns to cast was Read Magic.
AD&D2e cantrip was in itself a spell now it means any 1st-level spell.
I never knew the in game idea behind the plusses of magic items. So incredibly fascinating. Thank you for another bit of obscure knowledge to wow my players with.
I agree feist books are great reads.
Certainly!
My homebrew campaign setting has a big Wizard University called the "Collegia Arcana." You have given me some good ideas for it thanks.
Noximus Jamaicanus Wait til I get started!
Elric Engquist yeah, I have a request to include tech mages in this series, such as the artificers of Lantan.
Lurv how you got a different intro tune each time matching the topic for these, its' so spot on practically every time also dunno how ya do it.
All in all it's bretty gr8 m8
I LOVED the Belgariad saga! Everyone needs to read it. If you're interested in Paladins, read the Paksenarrion saga by Elizabeth Moon.
Found this video very interesting about magic spells and items not to mention the style of wizards on what makes them tic😎💯
on the point of a +4 sword, so lets say you obtain 4 steel ingots from different planes each are much the same but lets say they have varying radioactive characteristics. it would still be a simple matter of forge welding the four together and make the resulting item similar to damascus steel
and since each steel could have varying capabilities then the enchanted damage would be built into it
I should point out this was the original concept of magic bonus points, but I would not put much thought into it these days, I just considered it an interesting bit of historic trivia.
I know what you mean about that special tension when you say "fireball" at your table 😁
I've conditioned my group to produce that result when I say "fire", "flame" or "burn". I played a pyromaniacal sorcerer once. They'll never forget that, as long as we all live
This was so good. I can't wait for part 2.
Some time this week if all goes according to plan.
Might even be a part three, we shall see where inspiration and sources lead us.
Would be a godsend. I play D&D rarely, but I do multiversal roleplay and I have for the last 20 years. D&D is one of the bases for validity because it is more developed in the concepts as opposed to a modern day anime. With that, I have devoted an unmeasured amount of time to my studies of lore and how the things work beyond just game mechanics, which is why it is so important to me.
so, no pressure then :D
Only as much as we make it. :P
Thankfully, (in 5e) material components aren’t consumed by spell casting unless the spell descriptions specifically states that it is.
there are a few things rarely tought off that I could see in a magical school, all of which synergising with each others :
Sensory deprivations baths used to meditate in, to help focus the mind especially useful when one try to expend senses
Performance-enhancing drugs, often magical or alchemical, essentially potions that do not have a statblock because they are not useful for adventurers
Brain-enhancing transmutations scrolls, or wizards
Enchenters mental guides that help with meditation.
Vancian Magic (spellslots) comes from the author, the way spells are named are also from Vance: "Mordecainan's Magnificent Mansion" compared to "Phandells Discriminating Barrier"
Some spells and items are pure expys from his work: "The Excellent Prismatic Spray" and of course "Ioun Stones".
Looking forward to part 2 AJ!
3-3.5e eberon had a npc class called magewright that emphasized someone working in and around magic
Would love to see you do a video on the subject of the "Blood War".
Lazerrus Laslonin it is on my to-do list
Gandalf with an AK is a wonderful image I didn't know I needed.
Gandolf with a ak47 run sauron run
Beautifully done my dude. I'm actually really looking forward to how to approach the martial classes!
Regarding the fictional "how-to" of magic, The Master of Five Magics by Lyndon Hardy is an entertaining read.
I would love to see something for all the classes ^^
or at least the ones likely to develop ecsentrisities like the warlock.
I have been pretty impressed so far with 5th edition including stat listings for NPC classes, and I have included them in my game with ease, so yeah, I plan on doing more of these type of vids.
Omg yes please make a video about druids! Talk about their circles, their secrets, how they work, what drives them...
are you going to do this on every class? Excited to hear Ranger and Warlock as they are my favorite classes. Double excited to hear druid because I can never quite understand, from a roleplay perspective, why the druid in the party... is in the party.
I love the intro!! Well done dude.
10:56 i’ll make sure to incorporate NPC’s that are in random places just to find spell components, would be a great RO
Rp
I had a half orc wizard, (yest I like odd characters, & the hp for cross classing as a Barbarian helps,) who kept his spell book as tattoos on his arms in orcish runes.
When you say Wizard academy I can't help think of Terry Pratchett's Unseen University on Discworld.
Victor Valdez Every time I mention dried frog pills, I am thinking about Unseen University :). great concept for the wizards spell book tattoos.
Wait, you had one page worth of room on his arms for pages worth of writing equal to the combined spell levels of all known spells plus 1 page worth for each cantrip?
either the comp mage or comp arc talk about alternate spellbooks including tattoos, though the tattoo one was boring.
Holy crap there's four of these! Awesome!
Substituting Labrador for Bloodhound fur will just result in cuter, more snuggly spell effects. 🤗 Locate Creature would lead you to a dog park where a goodest boy is waiting to _git da' ball._ 🥰
Thanks for the upload! Love your vids!
Thanks Ratt611
You know, the way you described the living situation and interactions between apprentices as fodder for a young adult novel gives me many ideas. Wizard harem anime anyone?
My human wizard, wtites spells in sulven, which he also uses to speak with his fey familliar.
I'm watching the wizard videos again tobight. Magic and spells may I suggest you do more videos of.
Next up, Summoning, pacts, binding and banishing
Wizards are badass.
Great job sir the depth and detail were aplenty cheers 🍻
Gandalf with an ak. Epic.😂
Definitely Subbed, love D&D lore and want to see a actual Dungeons & Dragons open world role-playing game. We finally got the Harry Potter rpg now D&D and Star Wars got to give us a open world rpg.
great vid as always. two questions
1. how do you feel about the use of colored robes to denote rank or school
2
have you thought about doing the nothic might flow well from the wizard discussion
Yes, the monsters after the wizard vids will have a magical theme to them. :)And robes.. well, personally no, I don't play them like that, except the wizards of Thay and Hobgoblin warcasters like to wear red.
When i saw gandalf at the end, i lost it. 🤣
loved it! thanks AJ
Most welcome :)
wow- fast replay
Brilliant content- worth its weight in dried frogskin snuff!
Your like the only time I've heard the belgeriad mentioned theres a sequal to the mallorean.
The swords books rock too
Love this channel! Had an idea for a “Wand Slinger” and would appreciate assistance and ideas for character creation. Basically I am thinking something like an Arcane Archer and Gun Slinger. Obviously it would have some wizard schooling, item creation (?), and feats that help it along too.
Maybe with some Wanted movie like awesomeness thrown in. lol
Not sure how best this would be achieved so helpful comments are always much appreciated! 😁
I play with 3.5e rules , DMG: Magic Traps, feat: create wondrous item.
cost 50gp x caster level x10xp, " Fire Ball trap" caster: 6th= 300gp+60xp for one time use.
continuous use cost: 500gp x caster level x 100xp = 3,000gp+600xp "and never runs out of charges."
My game shops run with, F! the gp and pay for it with XP.
" That witch , I saw her carve a little wooden mouse right in front of my eyes ! Now I can't get rid of the mice in my house !" Honestly how are you going to carve a wooden Master Work spoon or toy mouse ? !
We ran a Harry Potter game by creating magic trap wands.
The wizards of Harry Potter strike me as more of a cross class between Wiz, and Sorc. But that's just me.
A game in which knowing things gives you super powers? No wonder nerds like it so much
Imagine a buff (for a wizard) wizard who uses a magic anvil as his spell book, carries a smiting hammer, and loves making magic items of all sorts, from books, jewelry and toys, to armor weapons and staffs. Just give his hammer electric properties, blond hair and a beard, and mage hand and call him Thor!
so, if i have a +2 hammer, the hammer would have steel from this plane of existence, material from a layer of hell and a material from like limbo or somethin'? that sound cool
Oh wow, I always thought of wizards as rather basic fantasy fare, but never as the theoretical physicist super-geniuses of the DnD world!
thank you thank you thank you for creating this
The truly crazy thing is, is that blood hounds don’t even have fur only hair 😂😂😂
I can't help but feel you missed a cheeky chance to use Daffy Ducks take on being a wizard.
I'm not a big Disney fan.
AJ Pickett. I was pretty sure Daffy was licenced under Warner Brothers and not Disney. Might be wrong.
'Sudoko at a glance'... :)
WOOHOO another one!
Yeah it was a 'roll up sleeves and do it' week end.
Haha good on ya mate :)
I wrote up a spell component list for 3.5
3.5e DMG: Creating Magic Trap Items; feat: create wondrous item.
I hated " spell components " and other exotic materials to craft magic items.
" How do you create a Master Work Spoon ? Or a Staff ?"
Trade out 99% of gp value of said item and pay the full difrence with the spell caster XP.
Spell components
a.) natural stander
b.) fresh vs dry, what time of the year are they used for normal or add special spell effect.
c.) special with natural Meta Magic effects.
d.) the spell component has been empower through spell use.
i.) does the caster Has to drink more than Two potions to cast a given spell for the effect to set in ?
Effect: the Wild Rose of Elemental Fire will naturally Maximize Spell feat all fire base spells .
xx.) how much will this rose cost and how much is it safe to use ?
what does he says around 11:14? Carefully prepared and folded what?
Tree Bark
The player class videos are awesome. Are you going to come back to this series soon?
Do a coal golem or clockwork gnome video
Feist and Eddings mentions in the same video? I knew I followed you for a reason :D
Eddings is my Tolkien.
I legitimately cried when the Mallorean ended
Feist is mine. was reading his books before i'd ever heard of the lord of the rings.
and the computer game betrayal at krondor (based on his book krondor: the betrayal) was my fist step into fantasy.
Eddings is OK too I suppose :P (jks, read most of his books)
good stuff
Sounds rather like your average software developer.
"Hey, this scroll doesn't work the way I intended it to, could you take a look at it?"
"Looks like you forgot a transmutation sigil here..."
"Ah shit, how did I miss that?"
"Also these incantations can be written in a more compact way if you write it circled around a pentacle"
Can you make Druid Circle of the Spores lore guide ?
And you got sub , great videos!
Yeah. This is how I spend my Saturday nights... What do you do, go to the club?
Ooooooh you just reminded me of the anecdote I have to include in the next video, about the magically addictive onion dip, the bar run by Goblin barmaid 'Krandy", the extradimensional treasure trunk and the 24 hour apprentice rave party in the basement with illusionary light show... that mini campaign was hilarious!
VoiceOfMan If the club has a Beholder singing, "All Eyes on Me!"
My favorite part was where the Beholder hit me with the petrification beam.. man, that rocked.
Hey, when are you gonna make one for the paladins. Love your stuff btw😊
hell yeah man. magic and science are just different interpretations of understanding and manipulation of reality.
Eric Hibner and energies
I'm sure someone else has said this before, but one day a book series maybe?
16:30 OK I got tomorrow off cause it's Sunday. Im.smoking and watching video rather than just listening. That's ducking Gandalf with an AK. Lololol
Thank you for this tasty lore 😋
Try complete Mage and Complete Arcane
For " adults."
a.) arcane trickster: rogue/ thief," Harry Potter & friends" may have open a few 'locks' but it didn't show the students training to Pick locks by hand.
b.) eldritch knight: that is more like a multi class fighter/ wizard maybe sorcerer with a prestige class.
3.5e rules, True Strike: grants +20 to hit insight bonus on next attack roll, follow with the feat Power Attack.
i.) Harry Potter Hogworths school didn't show any melee training.
I as a DM still allow the use of extra dimensional metals from the outer Realms to forge Masterwork weapons with natural enchantments and bonuses however I place certain restrictions on it for example you couldn't Forge material from the plane of limbo with material from the plane of mechanist there too opposing ideologies and principles and this is reflected in the material that even makes up the realm this keeps people from getting an ungodly powerful weapon but secretly there is a way and it involves outworld sigil and the spire and materials gained from there one thing I would do if I was in an adventure that took me to the Great Wheel outer realms I would collect spools of metal specifically iron cable or steel cord preferably steel cord imagine taking steel cord from around Great Wheel combining it with steel cord made from the metal of outworld forged buy the greatest blacksmith of all of sigil you would then have a weapon capable of bringing death to any creature except for maybe the lady of pain, the Mad God, and of course AO but all other beings would probably meet their end to a weapon produced in such a way in fact if anybody figured out what you were doing you would probably get killed before you completed it
The utimate low power cantrip is: Bigby's Insulting Finger (BIF)
BIF can be cast by anyone, regardless of class, intelligence or wisdom.
Where do you get your artwork from?
howtod&d my artwork comes from years of practice, the artwork in the videos comes from Google image search. all credit goes to the original artists.
Thanks AJ.
AJ Pickett
You need to list the original artists in the video description if you want to use their work.
Espically if you didn't ask premission.
Great I just watched a video of a guy who said he is building an ICBM in his garage.
Funny, but no, I didn't, and no, I am not (I'd be much more likely to build a VR piloted drone with a rail gun).
The components that confuse me are crushed gemstones. I would love to know how they crush those.
Noximus Jamaicanus they are just crystals, even diamonds are not indestructible.
Noximus Jamaicanus oh, they crush them prior to the spell being cast, they just carry the gem powder around.
Well I guess if the spell is not fussy because as a single crystal breaking diamond is quite difficult but I guess if the spell works with a lot of really small single crystal diamonds then it is fine.
Noximus Jamaicanus with a real big hammer
Very carefully
Maybe the real magic was the friends we made along the way
Heh!
That or the Fireballs
Gandalf with the AK was... surprising... lol
Noximus Jamaicanus Wizards routinely get handed mysterious rods to figure out how to "make it work"... this image sums it up nicely.
Does anybody know what book he is referring to at 1:40? The closest google can get me is "remedy device".
Free Williy Magician, by Raymond E. Feist
Free Williy Dragon magazine articles written by Mr Greenwood.
thanks, was looking for that too :)
When are you going to make a video about shadow dragons?
Alexandru Dragan Deep dragons as well.
YES PLEASE!!!
the wizard with a gun seems fun.
I like 3.5e modern rules for that fun chaaos firearms brings in a medival age.
