Mr.AJ I never have encountered an approach with so FINE details about the wizard topic. You surely put a great lot of effort on this videos to give us so much quality. I and my characters are deeply thankful for your amazing work sir.
I had a chaotic diviner who commissioned the PCs on missions a lot. The party did not know why the guy who loved paying them large amounts of money for unrelated tasks, laughing even, gained so many enemies. When the party finally figured out what was going on, the chaotic guy was bored with his future visions and wanted them fun, they were commisioned by ALL of the enemies they gained to kill the guy. When they finally got to him and struck the final blow, a Magic Mouth appeared. It said "I would have chosen to die, but I flipped a coin and did not catch it. Then I decided on a whim to not die. I want to live or die sometime else. Here is your reward, the silver piece I flipped and found later." In frustration, many of my PCs hated this chaotic diviner. He was frustrating like Joker was to Batman. I had to wildcard him out to stop them from hating the campaign. They were so close to beating him so many times though. Eh... you cannot frustrate your players too often, they start hating gameplay.
3.5e bard3rd/rogue2nd/sorcerer15th CR:20 " Chaos Mage." Full All Out Chaotic Neutral aka," Nutter, nut job. Not Him! Not HIM Again !" Keeper of Reality Altering Magic Items, " Self Made." He was played as a on again off again villain or a Young " Q " from Star Trek. but worst.. Hallucinatory Terrain, Plant Growth, Polymorph Other/ Self are consently in effect around him. Good news he Lends to Good.
It is interesting how you are describing how the different wizards would be, creates interesting ways the economy might work with the varied wizards. Diviner especially as I did not think about the habits of practitioners, sounds like a fun one to roleplay.
Yeah, once I starting thinking about just what their abilities would require of them I thought, Oh yeah, this would be such a fun character. Can you imagine the game play? "Yeah my character just nods and, with a shaking hand, takes a small green frog pill out of his silver pill box", the tavern owner asks if you have a reservation for the room. "Of course I do". Yes, of course you do.. you have a woman of negotiable affection who is offering to show you to your room, what do you do? "I hand her a note with the name of a very good physician and three silver coins for the treatment of her problem, also, it is best she not be in the tap room tonight". She is confused at first, then a bit insulted, then when she notes you are not saying a word about it, she thanks you quietly and leaves for the exit... by the way, why does she not need to be in the tap room tonight? "Because we are here, so there is bound to be trouble". Ah, good point. Well played, have a point of inspiration.
For diviners, it serves to know a bit about game theory. Game theory describes how people act if they know all the consequences of all actions, even if it means that they will lose, that they will lose the least. You could also create a campaign where diviners are actively trying to nullify the effects of chaotic agents in their domain, to make sure that their predictions are more accurate and therefore, more profitable. Kind of like creating a monopoly.
The Pretender that is on a par with the campaign my friend is running for our group right now, we are low level temporal agents going into the past to reduce the super powerful, god killer doomsday bad guys so our high level characters have a chance of defeating them and saving the world.
I've been thinking lately how Wizards are often portrayed as real world equivalents of Scientists, Hackers and more math based intelligence and I am starting to think there is a certain bias because Arcane Magic is usually called "the Art" rather than the Science so I imagine Wizards more as Philosophers, Historians, hell even Psychologists (Enchanters)... that you don't have to roleplay a wizard as a mathematician type of character but a more Humanities based type.
Who do you think were the researchers into the sciences? The magicians, astronomers, the astrologists, the alchemists. yesterday's apprenctice alchemist is today's chemistry major.
Very thought provoking trip into a knowledgeable person's perspective into wizardry. One thing that popped into my head is that your description of conjuration is a little like a magical Rick and his portal gun.
again thanks -- I've wondered away from the fold of D&D with Numenera lore AND wizards have even something i have always steered clear off due to ignorance of the schools --- I have to thank you for bring me back to the D's and exciting me to play a Wiz -- i have holidays in 24 hours and i'll be using this vid as inspiration for a Wiz of Divination ASAP!!!! Hi AJ, it is awesome to lissen to you, your ideas and sidenotes are so perfect for me. I am more doing written rpg but how you describe the various places and kind of how they could look like are awesome. Well they are for me and as such I thank you. The one episode I will not forget is about the diffrence of chaotic and evil and how the plains of hell and chaos do work. Keep making your stuff and thanks to all your patreons, as for me a s non patreon it is awesome to get a pice of the cake.
Thank you Bruno, I appreciate your feedback as it really helps me focus on what people want to see from me, without comments like yours, my channel would not even exist, so, your words are beyond price,
Was playing Fallout 2 and listening to this. Heard "no one ever died from a swift retreat" right as my whole party got shot to shit for stubbornly refusing to run away. Classic
hey aj! I'm the guy that asked about the deities, just wanted to comment on how it's odd that things align in such a way! going over the classes and merging the deity and cleric in one is brilliant! looking forward to it! also I watched your video on the purple worm mini, and I've almost finished one, I'll send you some pictures when I'm all done, it's looking good so far!
Your talk about how abjurers and conjurers can work together to set up demiplanes reminds me of a demiplane, called the Library, which acts as a safe haven for magic users, since in my D&D lore, anything that is magical is viewed as something that should either be locked away or destroyed. As a result, the Library is a kind of syndicate made up of magic users, intelligent cryptids, and the occasional good and neutral aligned fiends (particularly arcanaloths), while doubling as a safe house for magical items and vast sources of arcane knowledge.
Oh yes, there are real wizards, no doubt about that! In New Zealand, we have a very famous wizard who was the Wizard of Christchurch, now retired from official service to the nation.
I made one of my favorite NPCs for my campaign because of this video! Agatha Eyebright, diviner wizard multiclassed into alchemist artificer; if you enter her esoteric storefront, she tells you your future, then gives you enough drugs to forget about it.
I have been doing to the same for my players. Now when ever they ask to study or learn about monsters or a specific location or realm I check on here to see if A.J. has done it and then I make them watch it and act as if they are present at a lecture by a wizard or likewise by in a mages tower learning from an expert.
My goodness these two videos have been really helpful for me! To think I stumbled onto your channel less than a week ago with Asmodeus and the Nine Hells, and now you are the only channel I am subscribed to that I actually want the notifications of! Good on you! Can't wait to see if you do more awesome class videos!
I would argue with the saying, "nobody ever died of a quick retreat". I'm pretty sure that with all the horrors of the underdark, the reduced or eliminated vision, abundance of bottomless chasms with nothing to indicate they exist ahead and all combined with expeditious retreat there probably have been many a retreat that ended poorly. not to mention an attempt at teleporting out of a terrible situation, being counter spelled at just the right time or having their concentration interrupted similarly and resulted in teleporting into a wall or teleporting their internal organs outside their bodies ect.
Sometimes I don't want the mechanics. Sometimes I want the RP ideas, or the lore, or something other than just mechanics and how much damage something does. Thank you very much for your content.
You know, I'm watching this and you bring up the question, "why would Abjuration be a spell school frequently seen first" and all I can think about is in Skyrim. When you join the College of Winterhold, your first lesson is on warding/shielding magic, which in D&D would be Abjuration. Tolfdir, the old wizard teaching you, is particularly adamant about why you need to learn this stuff first: magic is very dangerous, and being able to protect yourself significantly reduces the risk of injury or death. In essence, it's like wearing safety goggles in the laboratory. On top of that, mages aren't exactly known for being durable, so adding defensive layers is imperative.
I'd really like to see you cover the Druid, Sorcerer, Cleric, Barbarian, and Monk classes. It just so happens these are the classes being played in the game i'm running, and i'm sure my players (all fairly new) would really benefit from you taking a comprehensive look at each of their classes. Also, this was another great video. Can't wait for the next.
I hope you do a set of vids on Bards and their colleges. And a set of vids on spells- not all, just some of your favorites would be great. Love you channel and waiting for more. :o)
I've always quite liked the school of abjuration to be interesting, mechanically. But I've always hit a mental block with how to play up an Abjurer as a character. Definitely got some awesome inspiration from this. X3
I have an idea for an abjurer who takes part in elaborate heists, sort of like the hacker archetype you see in an ocean’s movie except for magical security. If you paired that with some skill in divination and if he had a pal that was adept in enchanting/illusion you’d have some effective thieves.
seeing comments on other vids like "Why are there gnomes and halflings, they are basically the same thing" and I am so tempted to say "Elf used to be a character class.. just ,,, Elf."
True, but some possibilities are more probable. This must be what a diviner does. Sifts through to find those most probable possibilities and offer them to the patron.
This is great. Are you going to do this on every class? Excited to hear Ranger and Warlock as they are my favorite classes. Double excited to hear druid because I can never quite understand, from a roleplay perspective, why the druid in the party... is in the party.
If you could do a video on making things I would like to see that. For example; what things are made where, where would you expect to find tinker gnomes mechanical items(regional tech), what are good ways to have charioteers make stuff(should they primarily bring things to smiths?), also to mention things already made, what would be a good way to incorporate their past or in the case of +1(etc) weapons what about reforging them into something else(because you mentioned before metal from different planes)? Hopefully that is not too large or small a topic by too much but I think it might be enough for you to play around with.
Very good suggestion, thank you, I will try to include more notes on that aspect as I go, and yes, it is a broad topic, regions and locations may be known for specific items that are made there, and certain things are probably made in a different way on a world where magic exists.
I love your videos, terrific in background while I plot my next session. i only have 1 somewhat negative contribution, and that's to point out your point about the spell Revivify being a conjurer spell, it's actually a Necromancy spell. please don't hate me, it's just my own wizardly nature to correct little mistakes like this.
Mmmm, a bit of a problem with Conjurers. Yes they summon and transport X to Y, but I think you skipped a bit over the fact they also tend to have by far the most knowledge about these beings as well. A healthy minded conjurer, knows what he is bringing forth. It's dangerous to accidentally a big beastie. Otherwise, I enjoyed your take on these things. Especially abjurers, very nice "Police Mage". I mentally have them as "Defensive" mages, but it makes more sense to have them as counter intelligence. And oh boy, diviners. Most of my fun characters are diviners, and I love the fact you brought up DM cooperation. So many people that describe and give their ideas about these classes forget about the DM.
Some classes of abjuration in my game have a "recess" of sorts where they do obstacle courses, parkour, and a violent magical game of tag with their instructors. This is to enhance situational awareness and snap-thinking under physical stress, without losing balance. Also, a strong body better feeds a strong mind. Some wizard schools have common areas and social settings to feed the human need for belonging. Even if students safeguard their more personal findings, different types of young mages often make friends and rivalries, even date each other, with the pholosophy being that a cabal of like-minded youths will inspire and drive each other to succeed while maintaining mental health under such grueling studious conditions. This is controvertial however, as some groups of wizards prefer more exclusivity and less distraction from person to person and maintain very private student-master structures. It's a big world, so the approaches are different.
Well my standard answer is yes, anything is possible for your gaming table. I am overdue to make a video on Shadow Dragons, so, I will try to throw in a comment about this.
Would not mind hearing about some fo the more niche, or unique mage-classes and groups in the game. As well as some of the more interesting phenomenon in D&D, such as spell fire or dead-magic zones an wild-magic. Or even the Sorcerer-kings an the Defilers of Dark sun.
A spell caster with a weird silly twist makes for great NPCs. A brilliant Diviner who's actual eyes see everything about 5 seconds into the past. A conjuror who can teleport across long distances and into foreign planes but gets picked up an hurled in that direction for a few seconds before teleporting or maybe their left arm doesn't turn up for 10 seconds after they teleport. Maybe a conjuror who's constantly very hot to touch and has to read books with thick heat proof gloves. An illusionist who some how appears far away when being looked at even if they're a step away. A transmuter who keeps accidently giving random objects a degree of sentience, which is a highly disturbing process for the said object as it knowns it will effectively live for 24 hours and are completely unable to do anything meaningful in that time, oh and it turns out all tables are fascists.
how would you make a jabberwocky for your game? would it fall in with the dragon archetype or another type of monster? love all of your ecologies and vids they have been a massive fount of information appreciate it!
Yes, I would use the White Dragon as a base monster stat block and instead of the breath weapon, give it a bite with properties similar to a Vorpal Sword magic item.
Conjurer... at 10th level, no con check for concentration when they take damage. That is winning. And, with 5e not limiting access to spells by school choice, this is probably tho most OP effect from choosing any school.
i am soon making a campain where wizard is the main bad guy sortof so thanks did u made a video on vampires ? if no that would come in handy as well if druid or rander is only two options well i am druid so educate me please thank u for all the videos u make informations from them make me wanna be DM again
Yes, they will keep going until I decide I have covered wizards, then I will move on to the next class.. also, I better make a new play list for these.
@@AJPickett Well, I would imagine quite a bit of their work would be similar to divination wizards, what with the whole predicting the future/seeing into the past thing. I also imagine they would be useful for making dangerous artifacts, information, or even people disappear as if they never even existed. They could also make great history teachers, as who better to teach you about the past than someone who has actually seen it. I imagine their reputation among wizards would be akin to theoretical physicists- in that, most of their work is in theorm rather than practical application, since messing with the timeline can have dire, reality shattering consequences. They also could act as repositories of lore and record keepers of events and beings that were altered and erased via temporal manipulation. They would likely work with diviners, abjurers, & conjurers. They would also be taught the importance of not meddling with the time line and to observe events as they play out- only interfering when necessary. Apprentice chronurgists would be taught- in addition to magic- history, physics, and mathematics- especially probability and statistics.
Animate Dead cleric3rd; wizard/sorcerer5th." stander " Raise Dead, cleric5th " stander "; (wizard/sorcerer7th.) house rules adjusted ." Limited Wish " level It is all about House Rules and how magic works in your DM campaign world.
I imagine a powerful and very knowledgeable necromancer could bring back true life to someone. The problem is how hard it is to contact a specific spirit, bring it back to the body which is being mended, and give it sufficient life force to restart normal life functions. Already that is technically three different schools of magic. It may take more. Thus why constripting gods is the easier choice. The god does all the hard work.

Recently started DMing, and your videos have been helping me so much, thank you!
Conjuration and Abjuration seem so cool and practical.
Very thought provoking trip into a knowledgeable person's perspective into wizardry. One thing that popped into my head is that your description of conjuration is a little like a magical Rick and his portal gun.

Soooo a Sphere of Annihilation is basically a manmade black hole. I always figured as much. Never stop what you're doing, you rock.
It is a lot of things. A singularity, a new begining to creation, the end of the old, a rediculous waste of resources...and a fun experiment.
Was playing Fallout 2 and listening to this. Heard "no one ever died from a swift retreat" right as my whole party got shot to shit for stubbornly refusing to run away. Classic

“Even a turtle has a powerful bite.” That line alone was persuasion for me to roll an abjuration 🙌
Thanks for starting this series! I hope you can eventually cover the remaining schools.
My vote lies with the Druid!
Keep up the great work.
*sorry, I typed this before hearing the very end of the video. Cheers!

Yes, that ties in a lot with the Dawn War and the Far Realm actually, so I will be getting into that later for sure.
Superb Video yet again, Keep up the good work!
Thank you, will do!
This is great. Are you going to do this on every class? Excited to hear Ranger and Warlock as they are my favorite classes. Double excited to hear druid because I can never quite understand, from a roleplay perspective, why the druid in the party... is in the party.

I cross classed as ninja wizard bard mind reader.

Reeeeeally good video! (also feeding the algorithm)
Question is it possible to have a shadow dragonborn? By the way enjoy the vids, keep up the good work.
Well my standard answer is yes, anything is possible for your gaming table. I am overdue to make a video on Shadow Dragons, so, I will try to throw in a comment about this.
Since it is half some "mundane" creature, the shadow effects will be minimal to simply decorative.
No, you are not gaining all of those resistances.
Both awesome vids. thanks a.j.
Thanks again Jeffrey, always appreciate your encouraging feedback :)
You should do the new wizard subclasses!
Would not mind hearing about some fo the more niche, or unique mage-classes and groups in the game. As well as some of the more interesting phenomenon in D&D, such as spell fire or dead-magic zones an wild-magic. Or even the Sorcerer-kings an the Defilers of Dark sun.
hmmm, I will see what I can do, I am not an expert on Athas, but I know the basics.
Yeah, you can run a game for me any time! :D
how would you make a jabberwocky for your game? would it fall in with the dragon archetype or another type of monster?
love all of your ecologies and vids they have been a massive fount of information appreciate it!
Yes, I would use the White Dragon as a base monster stat block and instead of the breath weapon, give it a bite with properties similar to a Vorpal Sword magic item.
thank you!
Who was that wizard at the very beginning........Gandalf-minster? 😅
Conjurer... at 10th level, no con check for concentration when they take damage.
That is winning.
And, with 5e not limiting access to spells by school choice, this is probably tho most OP effect from choosing any school.
I dunno, the Diviners getting spell slots back by casting their own spells is pretty good too. Plus, you know, *Portent.*
Do you intend to do videos like this on Bards, Paladins, Eldritch Knights, and Arcane Tricksters?
One day
I always thought it would be cool to have a character who may or may not be blind be under a constant Foresight spell.
i am soon making a campain where wizard is the main bad guy sortof so thanks did u made a video on vampires ? if no that would come in handy as well if druid or rander is only two options well i am druid so educate me please thank u for all the videos u make informations from them make me wanna be DM again
That is one vote for Druid, the race is on. Thanks Marek, here is the video on Vampires for you.. ruclips.net/video/C35xtr_Dc0M/видео.html
Thank you aj
marek pastyrik I Second on Ecology of Druids.
So there will be a Third wizard video?
Yes, they will keep going until I decide I have covered wizards, then I will move on to the next class.. also, I better make a new play list for these.
do druids next
14:10, also bookies wanting to know what your bet is
Ah yes, very good point! They would need to know what odds to set.
I keep referring back to these videos. And not just for the diviner jokes.
I love wizards!!! I just wish they could heal besides poly or wish! Or the 5 extra hp. 😢
id like to hear about dragonborn
i would too.
How about the under rated Bard class
Maldor blackwater bard is one of my favorite classes
Tarot deck which deck? Where can I find them? 16:45
is their a difference between a mage and wizard or such?
i suppose they could just be interchangeable names for the most part
yep, furthermore, none of the titles are gender specific.
when a conjurer sais 10 minutes they mean 10 minutes in a demi plane where time is nonlinear or moves at a much slower rate
they need not to necessarily be in said demiplane
are you in the beyond? , yur gonna have hardship but yur gonna be happy about it, gimme th cup
How would you say Chronurgy wizards function in the world of d&d?
I don't have enough experience on the subject to offer an opinion, but I would like to hear your thoughts on it.

Well, I would imagine quite a bit of their work would be similar to divination wizards, what with the whole predicting the future/seeing into the past thing.
Please do Paladins! 😀
please do bards
WARLOCK!!!!
OK, warlock is slotted in after druid and ranger.
Wizards can’t resurrect people, though. At least not without Wish, but almost no one ever gets that far.
Animate Dead cleric3rd; wizard/sorcerer5th." stander "
Raise Dead, cleric5th " stander "; (wizard/sorcerer7th.) house rules adjusted ." Limited Wish " level
It is all about House Rules and how magic works in your DM campaign world.
You have a twitter Mr Pickett?
So I am told.
@AJPickett1
@@AJPickett put it in your about section may I suggest
Stoic, a little paranoid & unsympathetic...my kinda guy
InterestingAF
Paladin ftw
Last.....wait
Excuse me, but diviners are the best representants of the blue color in mtg, not abjurer. Blue is all about information gathering.
first
