    I'm surprised that tire stayed together as long as it did as much drive and you did on it. I worked at Petro in Elkton, Maryland, and I hated those super singles tires, and I remember the price was outrageous.

      Cowan uses super singles on truck and trailer, at least they did a few years ago.
      I went to work for them out of Cincinnati back in 2009, and about half of their trailers had singles.
      One blew out on I-74 in Indiana, and before I could get stopped on the shoulder, the rim was already destroyed.
      It was an aluminum rim, so the total price for replacing it and the tire was around 1500 dollars.
      I hated pulling the trailers that had them, because they don't handle well in a heavy rain, and all bets are off in the snow.

      They just take away the ability to limp yourself out of trouble. As a tech I like them because a wheel pull inspection takes less time and body stress but that's about it. Absolute pigs to change the rubber on a super single. I can get 3 11R's done in the time it takes to do a 455 80/ 22.5

    Had the same tire problem in Indy many moons ago. Blew a Michelin tire on my Firebird. Pulled into the first place I saw a Goodyear shop. Asked if anyone sold Michelin tires and they said they didn't know of anyone so I put an Eagle on it. When I left and drove two blocks down the road there was a Tire America with Michelin banners plastered all over the building.
    Had to love the pre-internet days.

    This coming from an old hand. I grandfathered in with a chauffeur’s license. Spray a bunch of starting fluid in the tire and light it. It still scares me when it pops. Put air to it right away. Oh, and put out the fire on the outside of the tire. I’ve had to do it a dozen or more times in my career. If there’s a leak, you should be able to keep it aired up until you get it patched.

    We ( our company) tried super singles on about half of our tractors, "" just to see "". As soon as we figured out everything you just described? We nixed them. You can't limp them whether they're on your tractor or the trailer. If you're loaded? They heat up really quickly once they blow. Nice seeing the Island. I grew up in Bloomfield NJ area not far from NYC. When I started Trucking those were my highways/ routes. The 5 boros and Staten Island and Long Island, CT and New Jersey. I was 24 then. Wonder when they will be able to make a tire that does not puncture. Holds air not matter what. But then again why would they, they would sell less. Ya super singles is just not the way to go. In a perfect world they might but not in the one we live in. Another great video FSC. Keep’em coming. Have a great and a safe day. Happy trails and happy motoring.

    another great video Steve I don’t know what your next load was going too be or how far you will have too dead head to get it but as light as you are with just the plow on your trailer once you found out for sure the tire wasn’t repairable I would have seriously considered just leaving the tire off and single out the one left on that side of the axle which is easier too do with Bud wheels like you have then it is with the old split rim Dayton wheels but then it would give you some time too find a tire shop on your way somewhere or possibly find a tire online and have it overnighted too a shop or truck stop on your way. just would give you another option too keep you moving stay safe out there

    man talk about state troopers & tow trucks. I had an SUV stop on the interstate in front of me. they wanted to use the emergency cross over in the median to make an U turn on the interstate in Ohio. man by time I had it locked up I ran into the back of them. bent hell out of my bumper but didn’t hurt my steer tire. my road service guy asked the state troopers(on the phone) to allow the wrecker to rip my bumper off so I could drive my truck. the troopers said NO. they were determined that my truck was going to be towed. but the trooper was nice to me, they took me to the trooper barracks to pee in the cup ( it was considered a accident) & then took me to a motel to spend the night. the people in the SUV got the blame because they attempted to use a cross over in the median. after I peed in the cup I was good to go. just had to wait on tow yard to open & a service truck to come to remove my bumper so I could finish my run. man the SUV was determined by the state to be at fault but I was so lucky I didn’t kill them. talk about being at road speed & having a vehicle in front of you stop on the interstate. only damage to my truck was the bumper bent in to the tire & my fiberglass hood had cracks in it but I did a number on that SUV.

    How the steer tire missed whatever you ran over is a mystery ... but when there's as much fog as there was when it happened it was impossible to know or see anyways.

    • @gullreefclub
      @gullreefclub Год назад

      He could have very well run over what punctured the rear tire but whatever it was was laying in such a way that the steer tire was able to run over it without causing any damage to ran over but flipped whatever it was to a position that it then puncture the rear tire. The best practical analogy I can think of is thumb tacks on the floor because you can step on one or more bare foot without injuring it if head of the thumbtack is facing towards you with the point of the tack facing down and away from you however when you lift your foot off the thumbtack it flips in such a manner that the head of the thumbtack is flat against the floor and the tack is now facing upwards or mostly upwards if it got bent but either way if/when you step on that thumbtack again it is going to hurt as it goes into the bottom of your foot. Lastly one other possibility is that he did not run over whatever punctured his rear tire but a vehicle in the lane(s) to his right did and shot it over and under his tire. The lucky thing for him is that whatever punctured his outside tire did not flip over and puncture his inside tire or a tire(s) on the rear drive axle or trailer tire(s) because I have had that happen to me and that just sucks a dirty donkey’s @#&% if you know what I mean. Hope my attempt of an explanation helps make how that tire could of gotten punctured as clear as mud

    What I do in a case like that I would put your inside tire up on a board like a 4 x 4 book your air hose up to the tire spray starting fluid around it around the rim and the tire and light it on fire very good chance it will pop back on the rim

    • @steamindemon3389
      @steamindemon3389 Год назад

      why are you telling Steve to do something that is highly illegal ?? using any kind of flammable material to inflate a tire is highly illegal. when I first started driving tire mechanics would smear this jelly like stuff around the rim & set it on fire to inflate the tire. that would get your tire shop closed down too quick nowadays if you used something like that.

    • @steamindemon3389
      @steamindemon3389 Год назад

      also are you trying to put Steve in the hospital ?? he ran around 30 to 40 miles with the tire flat. you have no idea in what condition that tire is in after running that far being flat. you spay starting fluid into the tire & lite it ?? that tire could explode in chunks that come flying back at Steve & break his neck or break his face. could kill him. watch some RUclips videos on truck tires exploding at tire shops & tell me if you still want him to spray starting fluid in the tire.

    Hopefully u found a good crane company to use. If u was here in my area. Hell i would do the loading or unloading for ya cause we own a crane company also. But we charge allot due to license's and getting permit's. U should carry spare tire's with u for Orwell. In case u ever have a flat tire again. My wife's Grandma was like u can connect hose's to air up a tire. And i was like yeah (paused the video) and i showed her how to do it since i have the KW backed up in the driveway. And she was like that's cool. U should get a portable fridge to keep water and drink's and food cold. When i got the 2010 KW i upgraded to a bigger fridge. So i can store more food in it. Neighbor's they always save there butter bowl's so i can take them on the road with food my wife make's. And when i am finish eating i just toss the bowl away (Home cooked meal's are way better) My wife she loves to cook. The kid's they cook during the week. And it's best so they can learn how to cook when they move on there own. And my wife and me will cook if the kid
    's have event's or games at school. My wife's grandma was like wow he backed up in that parking spot like it was a piece of cake. And i said hell there is times i have a hell of a time backing up. My wife is my eyes if i can see good enough. And i will confront Karen's and Dick$#ds if they go off on her. And i had another driver tow a Karen's car outta the way and she was not happy. Police arrested her instead.

I had a TV & a microwave. I carried can goods under my bunk. if I had to spend the night at a rest area or on the street in front of a customer I could heat up a can of soup or chili or something. your talking 5,000 to 10,000 dollars. back in my day a steer tire ran around 400 to 500 dollars a piece. And drive tires weren’t much cheaper. I never priced aluminum rims but they don’t sound cheap. I doubt Steve would run recapped tires to save money so changing tire size makes sense but it’s a big chunk of money. plus changing tire size he would have to get a different sprocket for his transmission to recalibrate his speedometer. changing tire size makes your speedometer give a false reading

    man after reading all the comments telling Steve to spray starter fluid in the tire & lite it to air up the tire I’m getting pissed. first that’s illegal as hell for a commercial vehicle. 2nd have you ever seen a truck tire explode before & what happens when it does. quality tire repair shops put the tire in a tire safety rack to air up the tire (after repairing it) just because the chance they explode is so high.
    3rd any driver that pulls a dry van has a good chance of hauling a Hazardous Material load & you definitely don’t want an open flame around any load that is flammable or is dangerous/ explosive

      @@uliwehner yes both tires rotate the same amount of times. But because the used tire is smaller, it needs to rotate faster than the new big wheel to cover the same distance and thats not possible when they are on the same hub. The smaller tire will start to scuff against the asphalt, because the big tire carries more weight and therefore will scuff les easy.

      @@uliwehner I never said one tire will lock up. Thats indeed not possible without the other tire locking up. But when a tire is smaller than the other one and they have to cover the same distance , one tire will scuff to make up the difference in circumference.
      Its the opposite of turning with the differential locked with two equal size wheels. But the effect on the tires is the same: One will scuff. (The one with the least amount of weight on it.)

      On the front deck of the trailer, like he carries a spare trailer tire when running loads west of the Mississippi, but that would take up loading space.
      There's also up against the chain rack behind the cab, stand it up and lash it there, but he would have to undo it every time he needs to access his chains, which would be a pain in the ass.
      Other then that two places, he's pretty SOL. I've seen Outback Truckers on RUclips being out in the Australian Bush and needing to haul their parts and spare tires, but they usually sling them under the trailers. Can't really do that with his RGN.
