My dog who is a German pinscher and is 13 years old just had a seizure 2 days ago and the vet mentioned that his ALP levels in his liver were 7 times higher than normal but the vet was more concerned about putting my baby on epileptic medicine which my boyfriend and I were strongly against. I have been doing crazy research like a mad women and realized it had to be his food. I've been trying to find at home recipes for him and this helped alot and I plan on getting that book now! Thank you for sharing! He's on CBD now and isn't on kibble anymore. So far I've made oatmeal, pumpkin and Greek yogurt for breakfast and rice, eggs, and carrots for dinner for the last 2 days since his seizure. I was scared about which meat protiens to give him but maybe that book can help. Might start with chicken today.

Hi I don’t if this helps but from one pinscher owner to another, my dog is 10 years old and is also experiencing high level of enzymes in liver, we had a biopsy done which then told us that he had too much copper in his system which the liver couldn’t cope with and was causing problems else where. They also found scarring they advised that this was common in this breed and the Doberman had a genetic disposition to this, our dog probably had this a long time before becoming chronic because we didn’t see any symptoms till now. They advised a low copper diet and meds to draw out the copper, probiotics, I am following their meds at the moment, but when finished I intend to use natural ingredients like zinc and vitamin e etc to put in his foods. I have also contacted a dog nutritionist to help come up with a natural diet rather than the bland and suspicious looking ingredients in these hepatic liver foods. I hope this helps or at leat points you in a direction you may not have thought of as we certainly had no idea about this. I hope everything is ok for you I know how mind boggling all this is. There is a difference although a overlap too with some of the liver problems and recommended diets for these ailments. Jenny

I’m so happy I stubbed upon this video! I have a 5yr old poodle who is suffering with liver disease. She got to the point of seizing very often (we took her to 3 different vets until one finally figured out her issues) we’ve been giving her the hills diet since and she’s one two medications. but with Hills diet it has a horrible smell and she’s so over it. Dear Lori. This is a fantastic video. Thank you so much. I will make note of everything and follow it. I just have one comment to make. When you do the weekly food prep for Milo, you mention that you cook a batch for five days and keep it refrigerated. Please may I say that food if not eaten by the THIRD day, must be thrown out. My husband is a Microbiologist, and he will never keep food for more than three days. Even rice must never be kept, even for one day. Toxins develop very quickly in cooked foods, even though refrigerated. Warm regards, Elaine from South Africa.

As a dog lover myself, I appreciate your doing everything and beyond for your beloved Milo. And thanks for the great info. However, as far as I know, microwaving food kills all the nutrition. Many doctos may tell you that and Jennifer Daniels is one of them. I highly recommand you to steam or boil sweet potatoes. If you are worried about losing the nutition into the water, you can give the water to Milo as well, but only after it is well cooled off, of course.

I'm so confused on what actually helped Milo's levels go back to normal. You said you took him off the whole earth farms red meat diet and had him on the hills liver care diet during the time prior to his re-test, which resulted in all normal levels... so the HILLS diet was the game changing component? However, once his levels were back to normal, he no longer needed a special diet food such as the hills one... but just a low protein diet? All of the information you provided were very good.. but I'm confused on what actually helped Milo here. And denamarin is a combo of milk thistle x samE .. so I'm confused on what conclusion you drew there as well regarding milk thistle.

Great video- you are very sincere. My only suggestions would be to steam (never boil) veggies and if you have to microwave the sweet potato, use a glass or pyrex container. White papertowel has been chemically treated (maybe bleach) to make it white- that will leach into the food product. Good tips on the filtered water. Maybe make your videos a bit more concise and include an actionable list or recap of the main points- even present a check-list at the end, again, not advice at all since you are not a DVM and you don't pretend to be, but a list of the things that have worked for you so people can gain more information and make their own decisions. Again, great video and really valuable info., thank you and I hope your dog is feeling better. He is lucky to have you as his dog parent!

One of the problems (esp for dogs with liver issues) with that canned food VS fresh food is "Natural flavors.
While ‘natural flavors’ certainly sounds better than ‘artificial flavors,’ they are not so different in reality.
Artificial flavors are entirely human-made in a lab using synthetic chemicals.
On the other hand, natural flavors use a chemical initially found in nature.
After extracting and modifying this ingredient, it is then mixed with various other things. These "other things' are not revealed nor are they good to
include in your dogs diet which has a compromised liver issue.
In fact, these ingredients can number in the hundreds, and the extraction process often uses solvents (7, 8, 9, 10, 11).
Sadly, the legislation surrounding the use of the term ‘natural flavors’ is lacking.
Providing an extract originated from food, it doesn’t matter what happens next.
In other words; that extract can be fried, boiled, mixed with various solvents, or anything else the flavor producers want to do.
And it still gets to keep the name ‘natural.’
Personally, I view ‘natural’ and ‘artificial’ flavors as the same thing; neither is something you will find in nature.
Also- Canned meat is deficient of any LIVE enzymes and is not as healthy as you may think.
Your video and information is a wonderful speed so that people do not get bored. You do a great job of providing information that will give people hope and spark their interest to at least consider a diet change. I have been a canine nutrition educator for over 20 years now. I have done dog rescue for over 40 years and have been feeding a raw diet vs killer kibble for 32 years with great success. The day a new dog comes through my doors he is on a raw diet. Food is medicine for both dogs and humans alike. We dig our way to the grave through our mouths. Same for dogs.
One of the issues with boiling an ytype of food is that it destroys all the nutrients just like processed human and pet foods. Please do not recommend using a microwave which is bad news for both human and pet food preparations. Steaming the veggies is a easy and a healthier option. A Berkey water system is wonderful for both humans and animals. One more thing... carrots are HIGH in sugar.
You might want to read this article (link below) by National Geographic. While a shih Tzu and a Pekinese definitely do not look in anyway like a wolf, they both are in the top breeds most closely related to a wolf. Feeding them as well as yorkies a fresh raw diet is a great option for liver issues.
    iheartdogs.com/14-dog-breeds-closely-related-to-wolves-you-will-be-surprised/
    Blessings to you.

Great video! Question: when you had milos good blood test a week after the bad one did you keep him on the prescription diet liver formula for that week? I am in the process of coming up with what I can make for my dog who has elevated liver and possibly hepatic escephalophathy due to ammonia levels. I also don’t love the prescription diet bc it is almost chalky but wondering if it was okay to use in the meantime, recommended by vet but like you I take their recommendations with a grain of salt. Did you have any adverse effects with the prescription diet liver formula?

Helpful video! I have learned that it is dangerous to feed your dog grain free. Much higher risk of heart disease: Dilated cardiomyopathy. Make sure your dog is getting some type of grain! A vet told me she had seen this terrible disease in dogs fed grain free. ALso, cook the veggies in a small amt of water so the vitamins do not seep into the water so much.

I've had two dogs whose ALT started rising as they age. I am convinced it has been because of excess copper in commercial dog food (the human grade, freeze dried, raw, expensive type, the raw grinds and the big corporation rendered protein kibble-- You need to check them all for excess copper). The two general veterinarians and internal medicine specialist never mentioned the excess copper issue. I'm quite unhappy about that given that it is known to veterinarians. The American Veterinary Medical Association is in bed with big corporate pet food companies and big Pharma so I hope everyone understands that they have to become well read and informed as their primary advocate for their own dog.

Thank you very much! My blind diabetic dog has pancreatitis and now needs a liver ultra sound exam. At 70 I’m worried for my Sean. I cook and prepare a pancreas diet because I did not like the Hill W/D dog food. The vet is young, but not comfortable with homemade diets. I will try the dog food you use and customize the other ingredients to my dogs needs. You’ve given me hope. And, thanks for sharing your wealth of information and the book tip. Bless you and your family, and your fur-babies.

Milo is a doll. How is he doing now? My 8 yr old Pekingese (18 lbs... so NOT tiny ) has just been diagnosed with Slightly elevated liver enzymes. Vet gave him Demarin and antibiotics so we'll see how that goes. My Dad died at 88 yrs old from liver failure due to high levels of Tylenol after a hip surgery so I'm wondering if Heart worm pills are a cause... or an ingredient in commercial dog food (we avoid dog food w/ byproducts).. I feed my dog a combination of canned food (no by products), a little bit of kibble (no dyes) and home cooked chicken . We also avoid that "Gravy" in the dog food and use the pate instead.. I think there's Carageenan in the gravy. Another concern of mine is what type of Pet bowl to use ... ceramic, plastic or glass? as for Raw meat... while Pekingese are very close to wolves genetically it did Not work for us... almost choked on a chicken neck (tried it for teeth cleaning). How do you filter your water ? Great video thanks.

The food that you were feeding Milo, Whole Earth Farms Beef formula lists beef liver high on the ingredient list. Beef liver has a lot of copper. Additionally, sweet potatoes show up high on the list of veggies in that food-- Of the veggies, sweet potatoes, relatively speaking, are higher in copper than other veggies or grains. Additionally, to all that naturally present copper, they indiscriminately dump in a generic, mineral pre-mix containing Copper Sulfate.
It is my opinion (as a doctor of chemistry who is very well read on canine nutrition) that Milo's problem was from excess copper from this particular food. Because I don't know the final concentration of copper in this food, this is only a hypothesis. However, after doing a lot of literature research plus reading a lot of anecdotal stuff, I am convinced that the riskiest foods are the natural, expensive ones that contain beef or lamb liver (these two types of liver are very high in copper) and then add in extra copper supplement. Luckily, that blood test alerted you before it got serious.
Please watch Dana Scott's discussion of excess copper in dog food on her yt channel, "Dogs Naturally Magazine".

Wolfs/dogs will get everything from the deers stomach contents be it berries, grass, seed basically all the stomach contents.
On a BARF diet including raw vegetables if you buy pre made these have the correct offal, bone and meat content and you just add apple, berries even almond butter and coconut oil preferably organic.

I wish I've seen this video last year. We had to go through the horror of losing our BaileyC 1.5yo brown lab. Sadly, the vet clinic we have here caused her liver to fail.
Prior to spay surgery they did blood test showing her liver enzyme high but still proceeded with giving her vaccine shots the same day she'll have her spay surgery wherein they gave her systemic shot of pain reliever thats bad for labradors. After 2 mos her belly started to grow bigger making her look liked pregnant then vet clinic kept giving us different diagnosis and giving her under different medications: antibiotics steroids etc. She started to lose weight and was having diarrhea 4-5x a day. The vet changed her food gave us that very expensive Hills science diet which my dog never wanted to eat even in the brink of dying. I stopped her medications and sought help with a holistic practitioner from Canada. She saved my dog by turning to raw food diet and organic supplemets. We have never brought our dog back to the vet since theyre the only vet here.
I agree with the vet clinics always pushing for products where theyre paid to promote. I feel bad for pet parents who has no idea on how the vet clinics end up shortening their pets lives.
All signs and symptoms you mentioned manifested in my furbaby. Im just thankful she's doing fine now. Thank you for sharing the book il definitely buy a copy of that.

Hi Lori, I have 3 years old Mal-shi male dog. He has seizure last night, 4 times in a night but its only less than 1 minutes for the seizure. I brought him to the vet today and did the blood test, ended up his SGPT is high. the normal one should be less than 60, but he has 533. I was so worried, just crying all day long and find your channel, The vet recommend me to change his kibbles to royal canin hepatic. I bought them already, but should I try natural one like yours
(brocoilli, carrots and etc). Please assist me as you had this experience. I am so confuse right now. and read on the internet that dog that have liver issue can only live for 3 years the max, that makes me more worry :(

    Banfield is a horrible company.
After my dog got into some chicken bones once, I took her to Banfield and after an x-ray, they recommemded surgery because they thought they saw something. They were going to saw through her rib cage to open her chest cavity. I said, "Couldn't you just poke a scope down her throat and see inside that way?" He replied that they didn't have a scope at that location, but they had one at another location a few miles away.
What the f***!? Obviously, I immediately went to pick her up from those morons. I then took the x-ray to who is now my current vet (they weren't going to let me take the x-ray out of the office, even though I paid $300 for it, but I just took it right off the counter and walked out.), and when I told her what happened, she rolled her eyes and said what they "thoight they saw" was obviously just an artifact and a 2nd picture would have solved the mystery, rather than opening her entire torso with a bone saw. I will never, never, never go back to them for any reason.
Banfield also had my mom's dog on medication he didn't have any indication for and others were twice the dose he should have had, which could have been lethal if I hadn't taken him to my vet who caught it.
    Terrible company.

Neurological disorders accompany liver shunts and liver disease, from what I've read. That's why you have to be careful about metals/minerals in food, like copper etc.

Curious what blood test you had done on your dog that showed liver failure? Pretty much knew my dog had stage 4 lymphoma went in for blood work and the vet said it showed all organs were good. Today went in for x-rays and showed that his liver was absolutely huge not even able to make out the spleen and his stomach was excessively bloated with fluid. Going to try some dietary changes that help dogs with liver failure to see if I'm able to extend his life another week or so.
