With a second child on the way, it's got me thinking a lot about our family values. Just wanted to share some values that we'll try our best to keep for our family. 🤙
'Ohana is very important in Hawai'i. It always has been. Respect, for others, even if you disagree with how they think and live, is also KEY in Hawai'i. I have been to Hawai'i THREE times. I have perfected my loose shaka, & learnt to live like the locals do ("When in Rome ..."). I do not criticise. I do not complain. I just live and let live. In doing that, one can only be more relaxed. And besides, I love shopping at Don Quijote stores! 😉
I LOVED everything about this video! Your explanations about local values are spot on. You are so right; having manners like saying "please and thank you" goes a long way in the 808. Mahalo for sharing your wisdom, making this video, and having this channel.
Wow! You made me feel real good and reminded me of what Life Values are...the Hawaii way! I mentioned that to my oldest son (60 yrs old) who is a "kotonk?" , but I've taught all of my kids "da good kine stuff" I learned when I grew up in Hawaii! I still think people from Hawaii is the best! Mahalo!
I really enjoy your videos. I was born and raised in Honolulu and live in Vegas for 20 years. I really miss home and thank you for keeping Hawaii close to my heart. Keep up the great work. 🤙
This is such a positive and happy channel. What a breath of fresh air. I’ve lived in several states and all of the values described seem fairly universal. The one that does stand out as being more true in Hawaii than other places I’ve lived is the obligation to talk story. People really like the small talk here and you gotta do it if you wanna be well perceived. But not with strangers-at least on Oahu, people don’t tend to strike up conversations with strangers on the bus or in line at the market.
I am re-watching this again, and I love The ‘Ohana Rules. Here is one of my rules: Let your family members, who you love most, that you love them BEFORE they die, or else … well, you will never get another chance! 😢 😮
One lesson that has helped me navigate a rough situation in life is empathy. Knowing what motivates someone's actions and the emotions behind it helps me to respond in a appropriate manner.
I don't see these family values much anymore in HI. Maybe 20 yrs ago. And they are in most cultures alive and well, especially black and Hispanic, if not more strongly❤️
love this. I remember being taught from a very young age by my Mexican grandmother, Mamanina, along with my mother, good manners no te queste nada, in English it means good manners and respect are free so use them!
I love Hawaiian people and their culture too. Can’t wait to go to Hawaii They are our long lost brothers and sisters by blood .I’m jarai ethnic people in central highland of Vietnam. Boni ko ih lo ho . Which means thank you very much!
It goes with akamai and Pono. Accept responsibility and think about decisions. Some decisions are finite, so one wants to have as little regrets as possible.
Just spent three weeks driving around the Big Island, and loved the drive aloha outlook! Two seconds back on highway home from airport and it’s every person for themselves, made me sad.
I loved these sayings! Our kids are grown now, with their own kids, but it's never too late to learn, right? I have been trying to translate these Ohana Rules into continental American English, to tell others. Keep up the good work--you'll do a great job raising your kids!
Great video for sure! Sadly, some people have not taught these to their kids. Gotta continue to teach these golden rules to your kids from small kid time for it to stick. Thank you for sharing this to everyone!
Some more… “No worries beef curry” “No grumble” “Everything is good” (when eating food) “Jus give em” “Malama da aina” “Rubbish in rubbish out” “Grab a plate” “Aloha KeAkua”
Conglatulation to second one ! Old, back in 1930', Japanese family value... or American social value..."me" first or old Christian value .....do unto to others as.......
Although good you forget the other islands of the South Pacific. Tahiti, Fiji, New Caledonia, cook Islands, Tonga Etc. They all enjoy the water and beach life and have similar issues and advantages of that life style. If one hates the beach (as I do) there is no appeal of the Island life style and you push the American only. The quality of life is sometimes better away from the US.......................
You did mentioned one of your teacher was a Filipina, what got me laughing is when you translated the Hawaiian word "lolo" meaning Stupid. In the Filipino language Lolo is Grandpa. How do you address your Grandpa in Hawaii?
Used to be that way. With all the transplants, and kids going to school on the lower 48, it's not that way today. There are still some that hold on to past traditions, but getting less and less every year. Gone are the days when families got together all the time. Kids took care of parents. Tradition of "no make shame" for the family. aloha is all but dead. It's nothing like 10 years ago, and will soon be gone forever. Stupid people want so much for hawaii to be just like kakafonicate. Seems like they are going to have their way. Sad.
I'm prettu sure they're not *that* unique. I think they're basically Japanese/Okinawan values with some Pacific Island influence. Pretty much every culture values being nice, empathic, caring for family, etc. The only reason they seem "unique" in the US is that the mainland US culture is almost completely destroyed by capitalism.

I think it depends on ethnicity. Papa or Grandpa is what we use.

Yes bad luck, karma, what goes around comes a round. Bachi a Japanese term in Hawaii

I don't think aloha is dead. It's still there. Maybe it's not as widespread as before, but I'm still going to pass that mindset along to my kids.
